No this is new to me.
I had an orchestral version that used to scare the living sh*t out of me as a kid though
It's Prokofiev isn't it?

I'd heard about this album before because of the Viv Stanshall link (I'm a bit of a Viv fanatic), but I've not looked in to getting hold of it as of yet. I get the feeling that with so many stars and talented people it's bound to be extremely disappointing.

This takes me back... I can remember trying to decide which album out of 3 to buy from a newsagents in The Barbican (City of London) around late 77 early 1978. The decision was between Peter & the Wolf £2.25 ,Jack Lancaster's Marscape £1.99 or Absolutely Elsewhere's In Search of Ancient Gods. I plumped for the third. Imagine my reaction a few years later when Bowie was letting Dance in his Red Shoes with his China Girl;I saw a copy advertised for the best part of £50! Aaah! Well...Bugger!

Did you see Alvin Lee touring with Edgar Winter and Tony McPhee, over summer in the UK? 30 years on and Lee is a much more interesting musician, being far less technoflash than when I last saw TYA in 1973. Annoyed that the Groundhogs' Tony McPhee only had a 20 minute set, but I did manage to spend 10 minutes talking to him during Winter's set (one day I'll work out how to get the photo published here). On that I've recently got the remastered Tony McPhee & Friends: Me & The Devil/I Asked For Water on BGO Records - wonderfully recording of British acts playing acoustic sets, during the peak of the British Blues Boom period.

Thanks for reminding me of the album, long forgotten. I presume it hasn't been issued on CD? There were a number of these projects in the 70's, i.e. get members of different bands together for a concept album. (I can't remember the precise title), but in similar vein there was something called .... and the women of Zorg part 9, but I can remember Jim Dandy was one of the lead singers - that has appeared on CD. And did Jack Lancaster produce something similar, (Percy Jones played bass?)? And was there a Butterfly's Ball?
As mentioned elsewhere, the original studio recording of Jesus Christ Superstar was worked on a similar basis - Ian Gillan and Hank Marvin amongst others. The orchestal Tommy (on Ode Records) with far more than the Who - e.g. Stevie Winwood. All This & World War 2, using Beatles tunes (with Gabriel and Rod Stewart, out of a couple of dozen other musicians), was a bit of a stinker - but don't mention The BeeGees and Peter Frampton in you know what and been trying to forget.....
But there one session done for radio, which should be put on to CD: Soft Machine, Kevin Ayers Whole World and Rod Stewart & The Faces sing Christmas Carols on John Peels show circa 1972

I'm not interested in "Dick," but this disc does look interesting, Greenback.
Chris Spedding too, eh? He's very good -- I have his "Cafe Days" on tape. Great stuff!
Where do I know Viv Stanshall from? (I know I could look her up in Google, but this is more fun....)

Dear Velvet Clone, you're at it again - naughty boy.
At my age, you're lucky if you can get it anywhere. Do you know I was banned from writing anything on the Joe Satriani discussion group because I did insist in finishing off e.mails with 'Dick'. w**kers.
Peter - that's rude name as well - I am surprised at you wrt Mr Vivian Stanstall the last great English eccentric - Chris Welsh redeems himself as co-author of Stanstall biography (after that 'orrible tacky fanzine stuff in his Yes biography): Ginger Geezer. Leader of Bonzo Dog Do dah Band - last ever gig here at Loughborough University.
Peter, do I imply from this you have only one Chris Spedding album?? Nothing from his time with Nucleus? Nor the Sharks who he formed with former Free bass player Andy Frazer? Session work with Jack Bruce. Lead guitar on Roy Harper's classic HQ, where he replaced Dave Gilmour who appeared wasn't up to the task......... Inventor of the first ever Sex Pistols' riff - they weren't up to it either. (And I haven't got to 1977 yet!). We lost him to LA through most of the 80's and 90's, but couple of years ago he gave the twin lead guitar sound to the touring Roxy Music.

May be stating the obvious, but "Peter & the wolf" is in the Various Artists section of the archives.
I never really liked the classcial version, a bit too stop and start for me I find the same flaw with the "rock" version.

Oh, Breezy, once again you disappoint me with your sincere helpfulness.
For one glorious, fleeting moment there, I really thought you were gong to say something about Ben Franklin's wooden wobbler....
Oh well, back to dull, insipid REALITY....
How about that Robert Fripp, eh?

Well, the rythm section (drums + bass) definitely sounds like Brand X. I have the rock version, and the narrator is a French man. Many keyboards sound like Brand X too. The guitar sound almost country sometimes: not bad. There are many wah wah effects on most of the guitar solos. Grapelli's violin makes the sound retro. There songs are surprisingly short. Mostly 1 narration per track. Let us say it is a more rock version of Brand X of the mid 70's. Brian Eno is like absent?!?

My clumsy attempt to get the topic back on track was a bit unsubtle, but do tell more about your relationship with "the wolf"!

Dick Heath wrote There were a number of these projects in the 70's, i.e. get members of different bands together for a concept album. And was there a Butterfly's Ball? The Butterfly's Ball was a load of old Purple people knocked together by Roger Glover, it's pretty weak. I picked it up as part of a double vinyl compilation with a subsequent similar thing called 'The Wizard's Covention' which is equally poor. The songwriting unfortunately is just naff. The only one of these celeb get together things that was ever any good was War of the Worlds. Mr Heath does refer to that get-together that shall not be named with Peter Frampton etc - I still have a soft spot for Aerosmith's version of 'Come Together' which I think was on that record. Not being beside the old vinyl vault at the moment can't offer any personnel details from Butterfly's Ball of Wizard's Convention but I think the awful David Coverdale is there somewhere.... best avoided.

You'll have to try the specialists - it's out of print. If it's just
the music you're after then it's not so difficult to come across the
mp3s.
Cracking album, by the way.
