A long time ago, one of my friends had a couple of Steve Hillage cassettes. They were all instrumental and were mesmerizing. To this day I can't seem to find these. I have no idea what the names of the albums were but all I can tell you is that the songs were seamless and sort of trance like. Very good stuff. Anybody have a clue as to what they were called? Oh BTW, these were solos, no Hawkwind or any other band involved. Right around 1975-1981, I think. ------------- Dreams. Gabor Szabo (1968) |

Hi Grandolopry The albums that you are referring to are probably Rainbow Dome Music and Open.  -------------  Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb. |

"Rainbow Dome Music". "Open" is not instrumental, though the best two tracks (the two last ones on it, "The Fire Inside" and "Earthrise") are. But for these two tracks, I don't like "Open" much. The CD version of "Open" also contains the studio side of the vinyl double album "Live Herald". In my opinion it was a good decision that these tracks were moved to "Open", because they perfectly fit there. And "Live Herald" could remain an exclusively live album. I don't think much of "Open", to be honest. Only "Earthrise" and to a certain extent "The Fire Inside" reach the quality of his other albums; of the studio material from "Live Herald" only the punky "1988 Activator" convinces me. The rest is amazingly lifeless for an artist like Steve Hillage, who always seemed so inspired. The live version of "New Age Synthesis (Unzipping the Zype)" from the album "BBC Radio 1 Live" is a lot better than the lifeless studio version (from the studio side of "Live Herald") and stands out well against the other tracks on that album. -------------  BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |

I can repeat what the others said and add a question. Fish rising is excelent, i like very much the "L" album also. i've heard some of "Green" and it sounds good. Many years ago i've heard Steve Hillage on what sounds like a radio performance, and they played a song by the Rolling Stones. could it be from the BBC live radio album?
Ah, and one more thing. He procued a great album - Diwan - Rachid Taha. this is ethnic, algirian songs. he also played electric guitar, and one could recognize him easily, his unique style is defenitly here. great album, recomended!

To my knowledge Steve Hillage never played a song of the Rolling Stones. He covered "It's All Too Much" by George Harrison and "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan. And "Not Fade Away" by Buddy Holly. ------------- BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |

If you like hard rock, go with Motivation Radio. If your a Gong or Canterbury Fan, go with Fish Rising. If psychedelic rock is your fancy, go with L. If you like electronic prog or Ozric Tentacles, Green is the one to start. All of them are amazing albums, btw. -------------

i would say green,live herald,L,dome musick and a collaboration album called khan. i've only got it on a bad tape sooo no more details...good luck hillage will serve you well...the glorious om riff..... dooood!!!! |

This was almost certainly 'Rainbow Dome Musick' - cited by many (including Steve himself) as ahead of it's time. 2 instrumental tracks recorded for the Festival of Mind and Spirit, I think in around 1978. Very chilled, and happily, very available from al;l good record stores. |

Green is one of the albums that has a special place in my heart. I think it could even be one of my Desert Island Discs, ...........hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, yup there's love in my heart for that album!!!
