Subject: NON-PROG ROCK
Date Posted: April 03 2006 at 12:31

here's a nice one to start the week off - wonderful though prog rock is, it's always nice to have a break and play something different sometimes..... personally i occasionally like a bit of jazz or classical on a sunday evening for a change, or a bit of britpop or beat music now and again, so i thought it might be interesting to find out what some of our prog loving members like to listen to other than prog.....if any!

your votes and comments appreciated!

You shouldn't lump R & B in with  rap and hip hop.

Greats like Marvin Gaye,Sam Cooke,Otis Redding and Ray Charles don't deserve to be associated with that garbage.

Whole lotta opera fans, yet only person voted for classical.  Peculiar.  I don't know any opera fans, and my uncle is the only person that I consider a classical fan.  I know several people who enjoy classical as background music from time to time (myself included), like during dinner for instance, but I wouldn't consider those folks classical fans per se.  When not listening to prog, I like hard rock from the 60's to the 80's.  Bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, the Who, the Beatles (from Revolver on), Traffic, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Eric Clapton, and so on.

99% of the metal I listen to is progressive, so therefore I choose classical.  I've been into hundreds of metal bands in every genre, but I don't care too much for those bands anymore.

Progressive rock is my #1, especially the vintage keyboards drenched Seventies symphonic rock. But I also love to listen to :

flamenco guitar like Paco De Lucia/Paco Pena/Juan Martin

Sixties rock like The Doors,The Ventures, The Shadows, CCR, Spencer David Group, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Love Jefferson Airplane, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones)

'guitar oriented rock' like Ten Years After, Led Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher, Santana, Wishbone Ash, The Stray Cats

folk music from Roumania, South-America, India

classical piano and - guitar

It's more like I listen to decades, rather than genres. Like 90's, because that's the music i grew up on.

Grunge (and post-grunge, or alt-rock), Alternative, and Jazz. For example, Our Lady Peace, Metric, and John Coltrane.

Punk, Post-Punk, 80s indie (stuff on the Rough Trade and 4AD labels especially), some 80's pop, some world music, some folk, some jazz, 60s psyche pop/rock, and probably more, but those are what I can think of right now.

After prog, 60s psych & classic rock probably comes next, as well a lot of classic 70s hard rock bands ...

Also a lot of folky stuff ... either singer-songwriters or folk-rock, have a bit of classic jazz albums (mainly by keyboard fronted bands) ...

Also have around 40-50 reggae albums, 40-50 blues albums, 40-50 Motown/Soul/Funk albums,

A fair amount of classical stuff too ...

Music really plays a huge part in my life ...

75% what I hear is prog or prog-related.

The other 25% are mainly Brazilian modern music, like Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, also a bit of bossa nova with Jobim & Co. or some 'classical' stuff (Wagner, Prokofiev, etc) and 60s & 70s classic rocks (Byrds, Stones, Who, Beatles, America, Cream).

sh*t. now i want to see real results... i really believed, but it was unbeliavable

...yeah, fun. having fun is best thing right after sexing/eating/sleeping/. #3 is thinking, #4 is destroying fun. someone had fun. (s)he's laughing at the moment. or someone just loves opera.

i thought that multiple choices means,, well, yiou can't encode everything perfectly,, not voting multiple times on option. or is it multiple votes - meaning "i want this poll to be playground: yes/no"
