Subject: One-album bands...
Date Posted: April 12 2006 at 20:13

I have a lot of CD's made by bands which only released one album, such as Museo Rosenbach, Neuschwenstein, Kyrie Eleison, El Diablo, Il Paese del Balocchi, Pollen, Morte Macabre... My question is do they bands are really trascendental to prog music history or they are just pieces of collection??

I'm not looking for new names but for opinions about this and other one-album bands...

Peace and love...

their historical significance isn't in the individual band/album but more of a repressentation of how prolific a single country like Italy had to offer in the creative growth of progressive rock at that time,

though some of these One-shot albums can also be seen to trascend their respective niche in that on their specific "one and only" release they presented such a subtle idiosyncratic sound that not only does it continue to inspire and gain new fans monthly, but also has never been mimicked or cloned in quite the same way, thus it stands alone as a pillar of excellence,

I would have to make some research to a good answer of the question, but there are two albums made by bands that only made two stuio albums that IMO are very trascendental, Hybris ( Anglagärd) and First Utterance ( Comus),  and they are two of the best albums of prog history IMO.

A trascendental album made by a band that only made that album? , i'll have to think

I have a large collection of one-shot albums/bands which are mostly pieces of collection; but there are also albums that made the history of prog, for example:

  • QUATERMASS - Quatermass (1970)
  • KHAN - Space Shanty (1972)
  • SPRING - Spring (1971)
  • STILL LIFE - Still Life (1971)
  • T2 - It'll All Work Out In Boomland (1970)
  • TONTON MACOUTE - Tonton Macoute (1971)
  • ALPHATAURUS - Same (1973)
  • SEMIRAMIS - Dedicato A Frazz (1973)
  • LA LOCANDA DELLE FATE (although they released another album in the '90s) - Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Pił (1977)
  • MUSEO ROSENBACH - Zarathustra (1973)
  • MAXOPHONE - Same (1975)
  • BIGLIETTO PER L' INFERNO - Same (1974)
  • CORTE DEI MIRACOLI - Same (1976)
  • ETC, ETC, ETC...

DELIVERY-Fools Meeting. Canterbury blues rock from 68 or 69,with Carol Grimmes on vocal (an English Janis Joplin, say some)and Steve Miller (later of Caravan and Hatfield and the North). A one off album featuring various Canterbury players. Not a particularily "tight" band, but lots of heart, energy and love for the blues.

There are a lot of good Italian prog bands that only made one album.

But what about an American band?

Anybody ever heard of Arabesque and their excellent symphonic prog album Tales of Power?

Average rating 4.48 for their album. One of the best symphonic prog albums ever made IMO...then their keyboard player left for some small town band

There is band: "Dali's Dilemma", they released only one album called "Manifesto for futurism". They have a defying Prog Metal Chaotic sound. Recommended for prog metal lovers ad for people who love complex music. Not recommended for symphonic prog listeners or too conservative people...

do you mean you missed their 2nd and 3rd releases - over 20 years after the first?  And about a year ago somebody wrote in about an earlier album by the same (or most of) the same line-up.

I like One-Shot bands. If the album is incredible, you have no worry, comparing it with leasty incredible from the same band(on the other hand, you'll never heard ANYHTING from that band...if to think they could do something better). If JETHRO TULL had been an One-Shot band with only one release(TAAB I mean) ,I'd love 'em more than CAMEL!!! The same considers TOOL's "Lateralus"

Have to add:
TALE CUE "Voices beyond my Curtain" - almost excellent!
AD INFINITUM "Ad Infinitum"
IL TRONO DEL RICORDI "Il Trono del Ricordi" (that's the case when I'd like to hear something more from these guys! )
BABYLON "Babylon"
VILOET DISTRICT "Terminal Breath"
SENSITIVA IMMAGINE "E Tutto Comincio Cosi"
JANISON EDGE "The Serveces of Mary Goode"
CASINO "Casino" (Nolan's project)

BTW,Kyrie Eleison has two albums. And both on my wishlist!!!

If I had an opportunity to record and release my music as frequent as Roine Stolt does ,I'd make dozens of One-Shot Projects (like MORTE MACABRE)!!!!

Well, seems like most of people didn't read the topic properly because he would like to know why a band is transcedental, not just name them.

I will not name any band because no one band is transcendental or essential to progressive rock. Even Yes, Genesis and so on. All of them are itens in a collection, if you have a collection. Some bands can have influenced lots of others, but that doesn't mean that these bands wouldn't make progressive rock if Genesis or Yes hadn't existed.

So you won't lose something so great if you never listen to a one-shot band or even a band who has released many albuns. If you listen to them and find them great, good. If not, enjoy the ones you already have. For sure you will never be without good music to listen.

I don't think one should be so keen on labeling Kino as a one-album band, since the album was released merely last year, thus having it only natural there are no other creations from the band, unless, of course, the project has come to an end with Picture and I failed to perceive that information, all of which I would apologise for questioning, then.

A especial shout goes to the italian band Celeste and their album Principe di giorno. A very nice melodic soft italian prog that reminds me at times Isalnds by KC.

...I go with "Cynic - Focus" a prog metal absolute masterpiece!

Yes, I was really into that album a while back. Some of those tracks, the first two for example, were really strong, but I felt that only about half the record was up to that level.

I like the idea of this one album bands (even more if this album turns out to be really good), because they have this sense of mistery...you want to know more, listen more about them...not the same, but I have that feeling with Anglagard (which Im listening now) whom only realesed two stufio albums...the first one being so painfully good...
