Hello !

I just wanted to tell you that the album "Almost Human" of the band Sensitive To Light has been officially released yesterday, on Cyclops Records.

Since I was the main composer of Saens, the music is in the same vein, but is now fronted by a scottish female vocalist : Jenny Lewis.

Please visit us and tell us what you think about it !

I've listened to Prophet in a Statistical World and I think it's very good - a lot of twists and turns, a lot of things to discover, very competent playing throughout, and the concept is interesting too. Also, Lenina is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard lately. However, the vocals on that album often could get extremely annoying (not necessarily bad, but I got the feeling the guy used his voice the wrong way one too many times) - and that can become a major listening problem on an album lasting over seventy minutes. That's why I'm glad to hear you've made a change of vocals this time around. The excerpts from the new album on your website didn't shed much light on what it will sound like, but anyway I'm looking forward to listen to the whole thing. I'm sure it will be good.

    Hi Uroboros !

Now the album is out, and yes !... the vocals are much appreciated by the reviewers !

There's an interesting review here :

http://www.progvisions.nl/swf/reviews_uk.cfm

(you can listen to samples while reading the review. COOoool ! )

In Europe, you can get the album by justforkick.de or rockserwis.pl.
In the US, I found it on Synphonic and on Kinesis website... here is what they say about it on Kinesiscd.com :

Sensitive to Light is the new band formed by guitarist/keyboardist/composer Vynce Leff of the French progressive band Saens. The most obvious difference between the two bands is that Sensitive to Light is fronted by Scottish female vocalist Jenny Lewis, who possesses a beautiful voice. Coming from a folk/Celtic background, her clear voice adds purity to the overall sound. Almost Human (2006, 66-minutes) is a concept piece with rich instrumentation including Mellotron and a guest saxophonist playing melodically (think Supertramp). The album is a bit more melodic and accessible than Saens’ work, but it’s still very progressive and symphonic, and doesn’t skimp on instrumental content. One might say it bears the same relationship to Saens as Fabio Zuffanti’s Aries bears to his other bands (Finisterre, La Maschera di Cera). Perhaps think of Sensitive to Light as the French Magenta but less Yes-influenced, with a more original style.

Sooo, spread the word !

It'll probably be reviewed here soon !

I have to thank your band because of this amazing album! By the way, has the guitarist some appreciation for Spanish/flamenco guitar music?

Posted By: vynceleff
Date Posted: May 23 2006 at 15:30
I am STL guitarist. I used to be a classical guitar player, which is not exactly flamenco guitar... but my two favorite pieces at that time were Recuerdos de la Alhambra by F. Tarrega, and Asturias by I. Albeniz, which are definitely based on spanish traditional music (and, by the way, quite difficult to play ;) ).

So I always try to put some classical/spanish stuff in the music I write... Anyway, I don't like too much the usual guitar licks you can hear everywhere in pop/rock music, based on the pentatonic/blues scale. So, using some spanish colors (and also celtic ones - just like the end of "Something happened" with bagpipes on a bolero rhythm) is a good way to sound "different" .

I'm happy that you liked it :)

The special flavoring you mentions is a great assett on your album because it makes you sound different in a positive way.
By the way, I also play acoustic guitar, even a little bit flamenco because that is my second passion after progressive rock! So I am always interested in guitars (but in fact I am a vintage keyboard freak too though I hardly can play keyboards).
You also named Nemo (I did an interview on this site with them), why is that?

Ah yes, that's right !

It's another french prog rock band, so of course we know them and the other band "Lac Placide". We played at the same concert in Paris last year...

Well, if you also want an interview with us, we are ready for your questions !!!

Aaah, there was a very bad review from Dieter  :(

No problem with that...

I'm just surprised Dieter dislikes *that* much Jenny and her accent. There always is a problem with french accent in english lyrics...

...but, I should mention that jenny is british, and that she has indeed a terrible accent... but a *british *one, when she speaks french (did I say terrible...no, just charming ;) )

So if you particularly dislike any accent (should it be spanish, italian, german, french, etc...) in english lyrics, you probably won't be disturbed with Jenny's british accent at all ;) , and to check if you like Jenny's voice, visit our website : http://www.sensitivetolight.net , and hear the samples. I guess that you can have even more extracts here and there on the web...

One more thing : Cyclops Records boss doesn't like female vocals... but was immediately convinced by Jenny's.

Cheers !

Vynce

Don't mind about Dieter his review, it's just one bad review, if it's followed by a serie of bad reviews, then you have a problem (so do I Wink) ! But I have already read many good reviews about your wonderful album Almost Human on other progrock sites, in fact Dieter is the first to write negative about you but that is his right.
Most of my fellow collaborators were positive about your samples, I hope they will buy the album and write their opinion on this site.

No problem with Dieter ! Wink

Moreover, he wrote a very good review about Prophet In A Statistical World !

So, it's his opinion and he's absolutely right to express it of course. I hope (I think) that the album will grow on him. Especially tracks like Dreams Are Coming True Tonight, Kyrie, Why?, or even Birth (behind the apparent simplicity of the track is hidden a MAD time signature work, and let me tell you it's very difficult and not "neo-proggish" at all (anyway, I like good neo-prog Embarrassed)

I just wanted to be sure that no one believes there's any french accent ! LOL ... Saens had some very bad reviews of Prophet just focusing on Pascal accent. So let me repeat : NO french accent in there Cool !

Hey, here is another british reviewer who likes Jenny's voice Thumbs Up :

http://www.soncibond.com - http://www.soncibond.com

We are delighted to announce our latest artists of the week - new French band "Sensitive to Light" and their stunning debut album "Almost Human".

"Sensitive to Light" grew from the ashes of the band Saens with one significant difference.  In Scottish singer Jenny Lewis the band have a real find - a singer of amazing warmth and power, at times not unlike a cross between Rachel Jones and Heather Findlay.

The album itself is a gem - both melodic and a touch daring, with moments of lyrical beauty followed by searing instrumental interplay.

 Thanks !

Very honestly, when I look back to all the music I made, Almost Human is my favorite one, then "Escaping", then "Prophet".

There are several reasons for that :

The first one is that Jenny's voice amazes me. It thrills me over and over, even though I know each voice inflexion on the album. Jenny really has the gift to be able to touch people's heart. My favorite vocal part is the first lines of Snow. Really, I can listen to it again and again and again. I tried several singers on that, and Jenny is the best.

The second one is that in "Escaping" and "Prophet", I wrote some music and lyrics about subjects that didn't touch me as much as Pinocchio. Pinocchio is a story that deeply moves me since my very childhood. Especially the relation between the fairy (Jenny) and the puppet.

So, even after having listened to Almost Human at least one thousand times, I continue listening to it with the same pleasure, which was not really the case with Escaping and Prophet.

But it's difficult to be objective on the music I make, isn't it ? Big smile

Time will tell...

Thanks again !

I hope we'll meet some day in the US !

Vynce
