I've seen discussion comparing/contrasting Gong vs. Pierre Moerlen's Gong, but nothing regarding Pierre Moerlen's Gong and Gongzilla. What are the thoughts here? Certainly, Gongzilla is closer to the style of Pierre Moerlen's Gong than the original Gong. Is that good, bad, or are we indifferent? Are there some who feel that Gongzilla are userpers of the Gong name who should be ashamed, or are we open to both - all three?
Here's where I stand - I don't even know at this moment, the proper spelling of the name David Allen. I was introduced to Gong through Pierre Moerlen's Gong, which is my favorite iteration - especially when it involved Allen Holdsworth. That said, I do like much of what Gongzill is doing today. How about you?

If you go back to Bon Lozaga's cd Bon To The Bone, which is pre-Gongzilla, this is really close to what Pierre Moerlen's Gong vibe was also. I though Bon would continue in this vein and really had hoped Gongzilla would be strong with a similar vibe. However, in my humble opinion, the Gongzilla releases of Thrive, Suffer or East Village Sessions just don't have that same vibe. I too became exposd to Gong through Pierre Moerlen's Gong and his drumming and Benoit's percussion. Much to sad to lose Pierre at such an early age. I totally loved the playing on Full Circle and Pentanine. Time is The Key is another favorite of mine as well. That said, the aforementioned cd Bon To The Bone is DYNAMITE!
