Anybody else hear the quiet 'cry' of Alex's guitar at the 1:07 mark? It deeply intrigues me. I'm wondering if it's supposed to signify something, or if they just put it in there to be mysterious, or what? I can't get it out of my head. It's... so unexpected but it fits the song SO well. It also shows that RUSH didn't just the pre-recorded bits and piece them together; the same riff is repeated later, but the single note is gone. |

Rush were pretty experimental at the time, so it's possible they just put it in there to add another level of depth.

| Being a Rush freak I know the tune well but I will have to put on the cd to be sure what your speaking of. ALex has stated he was adamant about being able to reproduce live anything that was on a record. tape loops and later digital delay let them go beyond simple three part songs of course but I always knew they would never just 'loop' a song together :) |

Yep, that's the crunch of a heavily distorted electric with delay on (and possibly slight phase shifting). What did you think it was? It's... so... mystifying... ...why is it there... ...why does it work so well... |

He often did fills of delayed guitars (Xanadu comes to mind)... the one in the Twilight Zone is more subtle and I adds to the song more than the other delay fills he's done. -------------

| That's weird, I guess I always knew that noise was there but never took much notice before. It sounds like it could be an accidental plucking of a string that was left in? It certainly adds to the mysterious feel of the song. |

I've had the disc in for a few days now but I havent had time to reply. When you said "cry" i thought you were talking about the first note in the guitar solo. After listening and noting the time I see I was wrong. You mean the muted picking thing right? I thing its meant to sound like a door knob turning and cliking open. apparently so one could "enter" this world of imagination after using the key to unlock the door. ANother thought I had while listening intently was how terribly cool of rush to make a song about the twilight zone and not use the "doo doo DO doo, doo doo DO doo" musical phrase from the tv show. They instead absorbed the ambience of the tv show and made original music to match. Very noble, musicaly speaking. P.S. Being a rush freak I thought of Rush when I first saw the thread subject so I think it was aptly titled :) |
