Haven't noticed Blue Oyster Cult being particularly prevalent on PA, but the live version of Astronomy from Some Enchanted Evening really takes some beating when it comes to serious giutar play, from the snappy original sole, to the extended 'walk away' type solo to finish off a great track. -------------  Open the gates of the city wide.... Unfortunately, BOC were suggested for inclusion in PA and rejected on the basis of a poll in the Collabs section. I love the band and I think at least some of their output would have deserved inclusion (no less than Queen or other bands which are in the Prog-related section) - but that's democracy for you...

I always thought that their early albums lacked a certain''je ne sais quoi''.
Compared to their contemporaries Deep Purple,Led Zeppelin,Black Sabbath and especially Uriah Heep,their early albums sounded rather thin and flat.
I don't hear the dynamics inherent in other bands of the same ilk.
Can it be the production?
Compare,let's say, Demons and Wizards to Tyranny and Mutation,you'll see what I mean.
Joe Bouchard's drums sound like he's hitting on cardboard boxes.
Also Alan Lanier's keys are way too low in the mix IMHO.
It's not powerful enough,too timid.

 - as much as I love Demons and Wizards, it does veer towards the Spinal Tap side of things, but at least it was the more mystical if at times silly end of things rather than the 'Sex Farm' or 'Big Bottom' type that 80s/90s crapola like 'Cherry Pie' emulated...Always preferred Heep to BOC, but I don't even see them as alike anyway. BOC have a prog influence sure, but it constitutes a small part of their sound and output- there's nothing on 'Agents Of Fortune', imo their best, that approaches prog- it's far closer to AOR, but of the very best kind. I'd still vote no if another poll came up on BOC.

I wasn't talking about the lyrics or concept but about the SOUND AND OVERALL PRODUCTION.
D&W sounds so much more polished and powerful IMHO.
I do believe that both bands covered similar grounds escpecially during their early days.
Also I was talking about Tyranny and Mutation,not Agents...
My point was that BOC's sound was rather lightweight compared to most of their contemporaries namely Heep,Sabbath,Zeppelin,Purple ect...
And I don't think that it was intentional at all.At one point they were labelled ''an American Black Sabbath''and promoted as such....

I do prefer Spectres, but Agents is great too.
Not their best stuff, though. Just listen, for example to their "black and white period" and to albums as Mirrors or Fire of Unknown Origin...excellent!

| "Fire of Unknown Origin" is a fantastic album, one of their best, featuring such masterpieces as "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" and "Joan Crawford". Some tracks are a bit poppy, but overall an excellent effort. |

I remember searching through the archives and not being able to find them and being very suprised that they weren't included here. Their early albums are definitely at least prog related, even if they do suffer from very poor production, and ever their later more AOR albums always contain a couple proggy songs. With Deep Purple and Uriah Heep showing up on this site, you'd think Blue Oyster Cult would also be included. All three bands have that hard rock, slight metal sound, with occasional progressive elements flowing through their songs. Plus, they've almost always had the classic prog. lineup (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, drums). Early lyricist and mentor Sandy Pearlman came up with the whole Imaginos storyline that ties some (especially early) songs together. The mysterious story, and the way it was excuted in places over different albums, is also a very progressive feature not done by many bands (Saga is the only other group that comes to mind).
BOC is very cool and underated.

I wouldn't necessarily offer Deep Purple and Uriah Heep as reasons for them to be included. Purple is here mostly for their fusing of classical with rock, and Heep is 100% prog with no legitimate arguments saying otherwise. ------------- "One had to be a Newton to notice that the moon is falling, when everyone sees that it doesn't fall. The drummer and composer for BÖC was Albert Bouchard and his brother Joe was the bass player both singing leads on certain songs having different good voices. Both production and recording tecniques were often problematic on their early records, except on Secret Treaties and On Your Feet or on Your Knees witch capture classic BÖC sound purest and finest, and On Your Feet shows how powerful and tight unit the band was on stage, surely one of the very best live albums from the classic rock era! Listen the amazing Last Days of May with monstrous echo from Buck´s white Gibson SG and feel the real power of rock ballad without an acoustc guitar!
