How many women are there in progressive music, especially ones who sing? The only one that I've come across on this site was Kate Bush (unless I'm blind), she can't be the only one.

There's a lot.
I'm not a big expert though...
Tori Amos
Simone Simons (epica)
The girl from Night wish...

There's a lot more, I just don't know their names.

Check out Glass Hammer (Lex Rex, Shadowlands, Live At NEARFest, and The Inconsolable Secret). They use a few female vocalists and they add such beauty to their sound.

Can you believe that there is one band from Japan playing complex prog almost as good as  Il Balletto di Bronzo with decent material and they all are women?
Yes, that´s true and they are ARS NOVA and they  have at least two exellent LPs on Black Widow Records: The Book of Death and Android Domina with beautiful cover.
If you are into that kind of stuff I strongly recommend these records! Have a interesting journey to the world of ARS NOVA.Wink

I guess that one diplomatic way of putting it. I stil don't see why they're listed here, not that I've heard much, but what I have heard doesn't even come close to qualifying them for inclusion. Again, it seems that Metal and Hard Rock get one hell of a lot of leeway on PA.

No mention of one of the best female singers of the genre, Janita Haan, of Babe Ruth fame. Very attractive lady with an awesome voice- check out their superb album 'First Base' from 1972. A mixture of rock, soul, jazz and blues.

FYI: Nightwish are also discussed and reviewed on many other prog websites. Maybe you should consider the possibility that it's not the archives that are giving a lot of "leeway" ... but that you might be too strict in your definition of prog.

Well perhaps I got a bit carried away there. But I really like what PJ does with the blues, particularly on To Bring You My Love and Is This Desire. Kind of a "mutant blues" thing is the best way I can describe it.

Is there a term "progressive blues" or would that be considered an oxymoron? Confused

Well, it's a term that I think would apply to some Led Zeppelin tunes, so...

To me, PJH is very traditional (except for some Post-Punk/Goth influences), but I will admit to not having heard too much of her stuff after the mid-90's.

Why do topics like this pop up from time to time? Does it matter?
I've seen threads like this before, and threads like 'how many black people plays prog?'
Nobody have asked how many white men who plays progWink
Sex and colour doesn't matter at all.

I really recomend "Takako Minekawa" if you like Kraftwerk-ish prog-pop mixed with Shonen Knife's cuteness.  Tends to cover a few classics from favorites like Mike Oldfield and the Beatles.  But then there there are a lot of simular groups like this from the last 10 years and it's not really what people here normally consider prog.  She's just my favorite of their lot.
Francesca Nicoli of Ataraxia (my top fav gothic medieval-ish prog pop, simular to dozens of other goth groups out there though with female leads.)
Tracy Hitchings of Quasar on The Lorelei.  (Simply the best female voice on a true prog album IMHO.  Never heard her other releases as they are fairly obscure and I never felt like ordering them directly from her).
Barbara Gaskin of Stewart/Gaskin.  (some perhaps would say it's more AOR than prog)
Grace Hearn of Oho. (same story as Stewart/Gaskin ?)
Sally Oldfield (Come on, Water Bearer anyone? Cannot forget her!)
Maggie Riley's work with Mike Oldfield. (her solo stuff is bleh AOR)
There are others which I would consider prog or close enough to progish, but I know others would not say this, like Toyah (Toyah Willcox went and married a top name progger), Enya, Louise Tucker (Midnight Blue), Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span, The girls in Manhattan Transfer, etc...

Scanned this a few times and am astonished that the most magnificent Annie Haslam has hardly been mentioned.Without doubt on a plain of her own, far exceeding any other of her peers current or past.Heather Findlay of Mostly Autumn is another fine singer and Kate Bush is a Godess.Joni Mitchell is from Heaven.

I agree 100% on Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell. They're among my all-time favourite female singers and musicians (and not only female, I have to say). Joni's live album "Shadows and Light", featuring among others the incredible talents of Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius, is utterly magnificent. And Kate's comeback album, "Aerial", was without a doubt one of the best releases of 2005.

to mention a few that have not been mentioned before:
Miquette Giraudy and Mireille Bauer of Gong. the former also appears on albums of Steve Hillage and System 7.
in Kraut there are Gille Lettmann (Cosmic Jokers), Rosi Müller (Ash Ra Tempel) and Limpe Fuchs (Anima).
Djong Yun sings on "Hosianna Mantra" by Popol Vuh.
Maria Archer sings on Embryo's "Bad Heads and Bad Cats" and "Live".
Claire Torry has to be mentioned for the vocal performance in "The Great Gig in the Sky". also Irene Papas for orgasming on "666" by Aphrodite's Child.
Sally Oldfield appears on Steve Hackett's "Voyage of the Acolyte". his second album "Please Don't Touch" features Randy Crawford

Something wrong with the "edit" button?

You'll find that many will submit another post rather than edit. Strange behaviour I know, and mildly irritating.

I didn't know that edit possibillity exist.Embarrassed  You've been a member a while now, so this is suprising.

Snow dog, do you have to bite everyone on this site ?Ouch  No, only the few. Besides, why don't you have a go at Teaflax...I was just agreeing with him, the original commenter!

Can't you be a bit polite ? Wink  I am extremely polite to those that deserve it.

Because every time I (and not only I ) wrote a post, you came and bit my leg.

You never explain with your arguments on posts you don't like.

(I will use edit key to add some more)

That's the reason you have over 9000 posts here

I remember seeing Babe Ruth live in the mid 70's and yes what a great performer Jenny (Janita) Haan was.

Not prog, but I always thought that Elkie Brookes was one of the best ever jazz/blues cross-over singers.

P.S. Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles was a darned good singer and pretty hot. too.. come to think of it they all were. Embarrassed

Vocals, too; she does most of the vocals on their album.

Another Québécoise is Christiane Robichaud of Contraction.

One of the drawbacks of liking the sort of music I do is that there are so few women artists-- I'd like to keep my music collection fairly balanced but it just doesn't work out.  Thanks for this thread; I'll have to check out some of the bands I didn't know about--and really I'm at least as interested in bands with non-singing women, because female-fronted bands with male musicians are much more common than the opposite.

Tale Cue's Laura Basla is a hottie. Too bad they only did one album. It's a sleeper-classic.

While we're on the topic of  folk singers, what about Bridget St John (a favourite of John Peel), and Lesley Duncan (who guested on Dark Side)?
