Pretty cool link to see how Peart's kit has evolved. I rather like the kit he had for Roll The Bones and Counterparts.

LOOOVVVEEE the picture of Peart and his monster of a drum set...wow! Oh, and I voted for hims as well.
My drum kit preferences can change pretty rapidly...if i'm playing jazz or whatnot, I like a smaller kit, but for rock and metal you need a beast with a hundred cymbals and twice as many toms, bass drums, elcetric marimbas, and gongs. It's just so glorious.

As a drummer I used to adore the big sets.

Now I hate them.

Zack Hill is a perfect example of an excellent drummer with a small set. He is IMO better than any drummers listed for the poll.

There's only one word I have for these super-big kits: "Protzig", a German word that is somewhere between "pretentious" and "showy", but somehow much more fitting for these kind of kits. What on earth's sake does one need such a big kit for, except for playing flashy solos?
The man in my signature pic is my favourite drummer by far, and look at his kit! It is, by the way, the kit he used when playing with Brand X, and formerly belonged to Ginger Baker.

Of course you're aboslutely right - a good drummer doesn't need a huge kit but....despite it being a bit pointless there is something exciting about looking at such a kit...boys with toys....

If you use a mani-tom (an invention of Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru), you don't need all these toms anyway, no matter what you play.

not to mention that the whole set is laid out in a specific hexagram pattern which opens up a portal and invites a demon to give Danny special drumming powers...Wink

LOL

Yeah..that is all explained on his site.

Pretty trippy.
-----

Despite not becoming a Mason or aligning himself with any other school of religion, Danny has maintained his heritages interest in occult studies. Endeavors into this realm have manifested periodically, such as the time he achieved insight into a hidden aspect of the unicursal hexagram utilizing an astral journey initiated through meditation and DMT.

Danny then set up his drums into proportions utilizing the circle and square of the New Jerusalem and uttered a short prayer relating to the principles of the ace of swords from the book of Thoth. He then performed a ritual utilizing his new found knowledge of the unicursal hexagram to generate a pattern of movement in space relating to Fuller's vector equilibrium model. The resulting rhythm and gateway summoned a daemon he has contained within "the Lodge" that has been delivering short parables similar to passages within the Book of Lies. Danny recommends as a device of protection and containment a thorough study and utilization of the underlying geometry of the Temple of Solomon for anyone purchasing their next record.

I once was at a Gong concert (the Pierre Moerlen version of it). His drum kit was of reasonable size, as far as I remember; what immediately caught the eye on the stage though was a huge gong tree with about 40 gongs of different sizes in it. Moerlen played on it at one point of the concert, and it sounded really fascinating.

did you know that Carey flipped the coin and decided the drum kit seat rather than becoming a masonic high cleric ? so, his drum kit is set exactly according to the architecture of the Temple of Solomon...

i went with Portnoy because he has 2 kits side by side and moves back and forth between the 2 and he has a large kit on one  side and a small John Bonham kit on the other.

Mike portnoy's kit are cool, of course. But There are better looking ones:
John Bonham, Led Zeppelin (Awesome colour!)

Bill Ward, Black Sabbath (His early kit. He had a alot bigger kit 73-78)

Dave Weckl, Dave Weckl band (Cool Drummer)

Ian Paice, Deep Purple (Great Drummer, Awesome Kit)

Keith Moon, The Who (Legendary Drummer)

Phil Collins, Genesis (and more) (Just Great)

And of course we have Thomas Lang and other one's kits that i couldn't find pictures of.
Well, my vote goes for Other->John Bonham

Now now, Terry - you're just being silly (or are we looking at some kind of Freudian over-compensation for something, eh...?

No - for the best kit, you just have to look at Neil Peart; I mean, look at this beauty:

Nice pyjamas, Neil

Carey´s is pretty awesome! But I always thought it was bigger...
Many now thrash the big drum kits...I must say whatever fits the drumer best, if Bozio wants to use 18727449525745 thousend drums...so be it, as long as the end result is good...

This drumkit may not look like much, but look closely. There are a few interesting little items. And one of the toms is not just a tom, it is a mani-tom, a special kind of tom that can be in- and deflated with a hose, thus regulating the pitch of it; you have most likely heard the effect on a lot of albums yourself. But what you probably did not know: The inventor of the mani-tom is the man in this picture. One of the most underrated or unknown drummers of prog. On my personal list of drummers he is ranked #3; his drumming is highly original and unmistakable. Here the examples of his drumming from the database:
