Yesterday evening I was listening to Colosseum II's "Strange New Flesh" album (the expanded edition), and I started wondering why one of the greatest guitarists in rock, the mighty Gary Moore, doesn't get the credit he deserves every time "best guitarist" gets mentioned. Moore has always been one of my favourite guitarists. As most of you know by now, I'm not a musician, so I listen to music intuitively, with my ears and my heart rather than with a technical bias. Well, Gary (like, for instance, Ritchie Blackmore) is one of those people who, to use my own definition, makes his guitar 'speak'. His playing is both technical and emotional - something sadly lacking in those new-generation shredders who are so beloved of many here (no names, please...  ). Some of his tracks - especially the instrumental ones - are so beautiful, emotion-charged that they sometimes bring tears to my eyes. Moore has other prog connections besides Colosseum II, as he played in Greg Lake's band in the early '80s. Anyway, lately he's devoted himself wholly to playing the blues. I'm not familiar with his later output, but he's always remained one of my fast favourites. What do you people say? |

Gary Moore delivered his best guitarwork in Colosseum II, way more interesting and varied than in Thin Lizzy or when he played the blues is my opinion. In fact I consider Gary Moore not really as a blues guitarist, too hard-edged for me. His strong points are power and fiery runs, in Colosseum II he made sensational use of effect pedals and even played some Spanish guitar in a very exciting way  !

I love his guitar solo in Parisienne Walkways (especially the live version)
Still got the blues is a great song for reflecting on past relationships etc..nursing a cold beer!!

| Got a bit tired of him endlessly making blues albums (he recently did yet another!!) that sound quite alike to these ears and his stance towards his earlier rock albums, but he is a phenomenal guitarist when he challenges himself. He was arguably at his best in Colosseum II as Jon Hiseman is probably a hard taskmaster judging by the peaks musicians that play with him reach. However, he made some great 80s heavy rock too that didn't pander to trends and as such sounds fresher now. |
