I am looking for music that is lachrymal, depressing yet beautiful. I am not looking for Evanescence; I have that one album and its decent.

I read the most recent thread on Stream of Passion and Ayreon.  Regarding SoP, would I be greeted with melancholy goth songs with dulcet vocals ala Marcela Bovio or pop-goth similar to Evanescence.

Is Materia-Novembre suppose to be good. Is it goth?

Suggestions?

It's hard to define something as being "goth", but Novembre definitely fits the description of dark yet beautiful.

other recs:

Isis - Panopticon (sludgy, but full of beautiful layers)
The Gathering
Type O Negative (not prog, but undeniably goth, and awesome)

and if you like Evanescence, Lacuna Coil is similar but much better. Wink

^ The Gathering are not Gothic Metal. On Nighttime Birds and Mandylion they sometimes sound Gothic because of the combination of female vocals + metal, but that's about all.

As a band, looking at all their albums, they're Experimental/Post-Metal.

This is a style that's none too popular with me, but if you're into Stream of Passion/Evanesecence type stuff, I can't see you not enjoying After Forever, Epica, Within Temptation and the aforementioned Lacuna Coil.  Green Carnation is also worth investigating.

I highly recommend Novembre's Materia, especially because it is summer now.

Other "dark beauty" albums you MUST listen to at some point in your life:

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
Agalloch - Pale Folklore(in addition, wait for the new one to come out this August)
Swallow The Sun - The Morning Never Came(the day you realize Doom Metal is your thing, get this... But listening to MDB first is a good idea)
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor(some thrashy moments though, but both epics are full of dark beauty you're seeking)
The Gathering - How to Measure A Planet
Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
In The Woods... - Omnio(the masterpiece), Strange In Stereo(also great). If you find them brilliant, just like me, you might as well collect the rest of their discography.
Ved Buens Ende - Written In Waters(defines the word 'atmospheric')
maudlin of the Well - Bath/Leaving Your Body Map

I don't think Opeth are very gothic... Lacrimosa are worth checking out although they're not usually all that metal.

IMO they were goth metal in these two albums you are referring but I don't want to argue on this... again LOL

My dying bride have some goth elements (mostly doom though)
Paradise Lost were thought to be goth metal until Draconian times

these two are highlt recommended IMO

^ compare the lyrics ... they're much different from the typical goth topics. Also, the folky instrumentation/keyboards don't play medieval themes, like in goth bands, but spacey/experimental stuff.

But for these two albums I don't mind if people call them Goth ... I just mind when people call The Gathering a Goth Metal band and liken them to Lacuna Coil or Evanescence.Wink

It's not 'Goth' but some of the newer Katatonia releases might fit what you want nicely, plus their older albums are awesome grinding doom metal :D

What's your definition of Goth?

I reccomend-

Winds - The Imaginary Direction Of Time - Excellent neoclassical metal, quite a supergroup as well (Hellhammer on drums)

Star Of Ash - Iter.Viator - Side project of Ihriel from Peccatum. A little hard to find, but worth it. Think Dead Can Dance meets late Ulver... http://www.starofash.com - www.starofash.com

Frantic Bleep - The Sense Apparatus - Great fairly-new Norwegian band. Interesting Prog-metal, with Goth influences.

Edit: These should fit in with the 'beauty' you were looking for. I'll add more if/when I think of them.

yeah that is a great album as well, it has the same atmosphere as some of the early Univers Zero albums, just not RIO at all, just minimal folk music, some very strong songs on that album and it builds throughout very well

agree with your thoughts

however, Lacuna Coil are largely influenced by the Gathering, as for Evanescence........ no need to discuss

Opeth and the Gathering aren't goth-metal IMO. If you have to listen to this genre pick up After forever or Epica.

I would really just like to point out that, Goth, as in gothic rock, and Gothic metal are two seperate styles without much incommon...Wink
