Ok, I have heard a lot about Jaco pastorius, and was wondering if anyone had some mp3's of his stuff. That would be great, thanks!!

I have the self-titled jaco cd, but I haven't burned it to my comp yet....
but definitely get that album, 1976 self-titled. He's a bass god.

He is the greatest bass player that ever lived. And like many greats, he has a damn sad story too.
Get his first album, get some weather report that he plays on (especially heavy weather, and mr. gone), get invitation, well, basically get all of his albums, because he is brilliant. lol.

IMO like Paco De Lucia on guitar, he will never be surpassed! Probably Jeff Berlin and a couples of rare other ones can be compared!

Get the 2 CD compilation issued by Warners in last 2 years, Punk Jazz, The Jaco Pastorius Story to find the broad cross-section of his playing, composing and arranging, then chose a full album from that. Weather Report's 8.30pm gives the best live jazz rock and an outrageous bass solo. Joni Mitchell's Shadows & Light shows Jaco live playing at it most subtle and sublime - and there is a rare DVD of Jaco playing in those concerts with Mitchell, Metheny, Brecker, Mays and Alias. There is a heap of legitimised bootleg CDs of Pastorius recorded in NYC and Italy etc. , which you pick with care.
And as Pastorius's successor, I nominate Jonas Hellborg*, who sticks with the 4 string bass guitar unlike most other virtuosos - and Hellborg's acoustic bass guitar playing is well ahead of the pack (IMHO) - check the recently reissued Octave Of The Holy Innocent (DEM Records) with Buckethead (also at his very best on acoustic guitar) and Michael Shrieve.

Kinda like Rembrandt...everyone loved him until he started painting
commoners. He died a broken man, where he was once incredibly
wealthy.  Stupid world.
