Topic: FREE Legal MP3 downloads of Prog music
Posted By: Easy Livin
Subject: FREE Legal MP3 downloads of Prog music
Date Posted: July 16 2006 at 14:02

This thread is intended to list in one place the many free downloads made available by prog bands listed on this site, via their official websites. The policy for listing downloads in this thread is:

  • Only full songs are listed, not samples.
  • If the download offered is at less than 128kbps, annotate that it is a "lo-fi" download
  • Only downloads available from the website we link to on the band pages are listed (or sites link to from their official sites).
  • Only MP3, RAM, and WAV files are included
  • It has to be possible to download or save the songs, not simply to hear them.

The list is shown in alphabetical order, and will be developed over a period of time. If you come across a band site which offers such downloads and which meet the criteria above, please post a message in this thread, and it will be added to this post. Thus page 1 of this thread will always contain up to date information. If a download listed here is no longer available, please also report it in this thread, so that the list can be updated.

N.B, Please report dead links to "official band websites" in this other thread (i.e. not here):

The engineering pedant in me must point out that this should be 128 kbps.

The complete official discography (and even more) of the long defunct prog metal band called Anacrusis is available on the website of the band (actually it's Ken Nardi's page, but it is listed here in PA as the official site).

Five of the nine songs off Verdun’s debut album are available on their web site (www.verdunmusic.com).

Four complete songs off their “Be” album are available on Salem Hill’s web site (www.salemhill.com).

Three complete songs (one off their debut album and two unreleased) plus four videos are available on Oysterhead’s web site (www.oysterhead.com).

All of these are complete and 160kbps or higher (and these are the web sites listed for these bands on progarchives).

If you visit Echolyn's website they offer at least one full song(mostly 2)for free download from each of their albums and various side project albums.

You can also download their live album Jersey Tomato for free, the whole album, which includes Mei performed in it's entirety.

Somehow this doesn't sit right with me ... I suggested this over a year ago, then my website is offering this and ignored for the most part, and finally you're attempting to build such a list as a forum thread because M@x is too busy to implement it properly?

Well, maybe I should leave altogether. Is there a way to delete one's forum account? I found no such function in the settings dialogs ...

I kind of agree with Mike here. The list in his site has been there for some time now and alot of people didn't even looked at them. It's actually kind of sad putting alot of effort into something and people just passing it by like it never existed.

I used to log on to Napster in school where I could listen to the entire cd, but couldn't copy anything.

A Spock's Beard fan website had all the tracks, but only 3/4's of each track, thus gave an idea of what the cd sounded like.

Are there any websites like this?

REASON: I bought King Crimson's Islands, Fates Warning's Disconnected, Spock's Beard's the Light, Rhapsody's Symphony of Enchanted Lands because of this.

On the other hand, I didn't purchase some other cds because while the video, or sample song on their website may have been good, the rest of the songs were not.

Exactly, As I couldn't copy/download from school, I was using Napster to listen to the entire cd, then later purchase or not purchase based on the content.

I hope there is listen, but not allowed to copy/download software to allow bands do this, or allow e.g. 3/4 of a song to be downloaded.

I think a lot of us have been burned by purchasing a recording based on a couple of tracks/videos allowed to listen to, but are often the only good ones on the recording.

Has this been mentioned yet? The Nektar site has most of their albums available streaming. No mp3 unfortunately but entire albums is good either way.

Thanks for the updates guys. I have added them where appropriate, but as streaming only files cannot be downloaded, they have been omitted.

I have added an August update to the list in the first post of this thread. These will be integrated into the list in due course, but for ease of reference it is at the end of the list just now.

Yeah, Cerulean Blue is very good; very original.  It's the wonderful narration that hooked me.  As for Symphonic Slam, I've been trying for a while but I am having problems with the site.  Sadly, I haven't managed to get my greedy little paws on any of the music.

Anathema is offering two new songs, A Simple Mistake and Everything, on their offcial site. They are MP3's at 256kbs

Just click on the Multimedia section.

I believe more will be offered up in the future. This is supposed to be some sort of on-line EP to drum up donations, since they are now without a label.

The http://www.dgmlive.com/index.php - DGMLive website has lots of free MP3 downloads featuring various incarnations of Crimson and recent solo work by Robert Fripp.

You can find these by visiting the front page of the site for the current hot tickle, and then scroll through the numerous concerts that are available for purchase.  The tracks for down load are clearly highlighted.

As I type http://www.dgmlive.com/archive.htm?artist=5&show=418 - the current hot tickle is an improvisation by the 1974 version of the band from their show in Washington.

We also run CD giveaway competition - currently the soon to be released Collectable King Crimson Vol. One double album and a copy of the remastered Giles, Giles And Fripp. Check out the http://www.dgmlive.com/news.htm?entry=532 - news story on the front page.

this jethro tull site is awesome. I'm hearing so many great songs I had never knew about even though I had all 21 albums. But I didn't know about all the songs on the box sets etc. There are almost 100 more songs that were not on the albums

Admin - While clearly well intended, the legality of the files available on that site is doubtful, so I've removed the link, sorry. (Please see the guidelines in the first post of this thread for links which can be included here)

After reading yet another kick-azz review of the Egyptian Kings album Almagest, I decided to go to their web page and grab the free download.

Unfortunately, the internet pixies don't seem to be playing the game. I'm having all sorts of difficulties. "File no longer available", file available but you have to wait until your connection resets, you need to sign up for the service, etc, etc. Bottom line....it just don't wanna download. Not easily, at least.

Can anybody offer any help?

Is it available for download from another site?

If the album was available as a free download (but no longer available at all), is it kosher to ask someone for a copy?

Will everything I write from now on be in the form of a question?

Question

you guys are too judgmental! I'm totally positive that the whole album with not sound that way! Its obviously a parody pop song and probably part of some dark and complex concept behind the album.

I've heard 30 sec. sound clips for all of the songs on the album, and the album seems like it will be a dark and heavy album, NONE of the songs sound anything like America. I think it was a very very dumb move for Inside out to release this song, it will drive alot of people way.

Hdfisch- you bash POS and Frost??? Can't you say anything positive? You can't base an entire album or band on one song!

I have to agree to a certain extent. That is definitely not the best PoS track I have heard and not the track I would have used to try to introduce someone who had never heard PoS before to the band. I certainly would never have given PoS a second chance if that was the first track of theirs that I'd heard!

You'd be better off going to the band's site here http://www.painofsalvation.com/enter.htm - http://www.painofsalvation.com/enter.htm and checking out the samples in the Tools/Download section.

You could try a tracks like http://www.painofsalvation.com/samples/used.mp3 - Used or http://www.painofsalvation.com/samples/ashes.mp3 - Ashes , if you like it heavy (...ish), or http://www.painofsalvation.com/samples/morning.mp3 - Morning on Earth , if you like something mellower and more melodic.

All of these are good examples of PoS's work, but they are both from the same album, The Perfect Element (2000), and they have developed since then. Their latest offering, Be is much different and the best tracks on the album (IMHO) show strong Swedish folk influences with some awesome percussion.

Don't give up on PoS – you'll regret it for the rest of your life!

I listened to that song from beginning to end, and I don't find it bad. So, what's wrong with that song ? It reminds a lot of ACT, which is a band I adore (incredible band on stage).
