Everybody knows Michael Giles as a King Crimson drummer; he is also a member of the one-shot project called McDonald and Giles as well as one of the Giles, Giles and Fripp members.
All the mentioned groups and projects are presented in the site, but the solo album of Michael Giles is not. I would be very surprised if I realise that not many of you know about the existence of this album.
Nevertheless, the album is called "Progress" (as far as I know, the only album by Michael Giles). It was recorded in the early 70's but got released in 1978 (the title on the cover says: Michael Giles - "Progress" - circa 1978).
The name of the album surprisingly fits my suggestion to include it in the site. As I am not a musical expert I cannot define the genre of the album exactly; it sounds like a mixture of jazz/rock (or fusion) with psychedelia. Personally, I enjoy everytime I'm listening to it.
I would like to see it included in PA.
If there is any need, I can post here the track-list of the album (with the tracks length), the line-up (including the instruments played) etc.
Please, post your thoughts and opinions about the album itself (if you are familiar with it) and about the suggestion to include it in PA.

Thanks. But why Prog Related? I would define his album as a jazz-rock one, rather.

The album, by the way, is not so obscure. It features, for example, in Mike's http://www.ratingfreak.com - www.ratingfreak.com site.
Although the cover of the album states the year of release as "circa 1978", the aforementioned site says it is 2002. I think that 1978 was the year of the original release whereas 2002 is the year where the CD was released.

I believe the same also applies to Nick Greenwood of the Canterbury band Khan. He released a solo album under the name of Nicholas Greenwood, which was called "Cold Cuts" and apparently it's also a progressive album. The vinyl of this album is one of the most expensive vinyls to buy now, it's very rare. It is out on CD though, so I think I'm going to get myself a copy sometime soon. -------------

After recording The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles and Fripp with GILES, GILES AND FRIPP, In the Court of the Crimson King and In the Wake of Poseidon with KING CRIMSON, and McDonald & Giles with MCDONALD & GILES, the drummer MICHAEL GILES has decided to write the music for his solo album. With his ideas in mind, he recruited Geoffrey Richardson and John Perry, as well as his own brother Pete, and John Mealing, to form a core for the new project. This was named "Progress". Mostly the main work on a forthcoming album was made by these five, whereas some additional musicians joined the record at the later stages.
The cover of an albums says "Progress" circa 1978, but Michael Giles didn't want to release it then, feeling that the overall atmosphere of the late 70s does not fit the spirit of the album (and vice versa). That is why (as far as how it can be understood) the album was eventually released only in 2002.
The overall sound of this record is a blend of jazz-rock, Canterbury, and psychedelic rock (no wonder -- most musicians involved are from the Canterbury scene or RIO). For all likers of early KC years (and not only) -- it is quite an interesting record to get an acquaintance with the work fully controlled by one of the pioneers of the Prog movement.

| Just have revealed that some sites report about Ghost Dance album (2005), recorded by Michael Giles in collaboration with Jamie Muir (remember him?). I know nothing about this album though. |

The point of "blind" addition is very well understood. Seriously.
But, in terms of technical progress, I'm a XVII c. person...
If Michael Giles is added, he should be added into JR/F or Canterbury, not to Art Rock.

Yeah I don't like the acting behind the scenes to add a band. Since I am not a collaborator (like a prog reviewer or special collaborator) I like knowing what bands have been added, besides the controversial ones that get about 5 different topics on why they should/should not be added. |
