Other - Robert Wyatt. If possible, I would vote for Peter Hammill as well. Wakeman is lazy and gave up after just 3 albums. Fripp is a genius, but of methodical work, wich is as good as the other kind, intuitive and following nothing but emotional outbursts. Peter Gabriel is a brilliant and truly progressive artist (according to dictionary, not PA). Geniuses. The rest of the list are good players. Steve Howe... I don't know what to think about him without the rest of Yes backing up his work as a composer. Keith Emerson just spent too much time listening to Prokoviev and Ginastera piano Works. And also, those artists haven't really made any constructive work on their respective dyscogrphies, wich is shown by the fact that they tend to go flat and loose interest as they advence to our times. Peter Gabriel, on the other hand...

Other.....Kevin Gilbert.

A true musical genius and very multi talented. It was said he could play any instrument instantly after picking it up,even if he was unfamiliar with it.He was a very gifted lyricist and songwriter, and his skill in the studio(his own...called Lawnmower & Garden Supply),was unreal.

His list of credits for someone who passed away so young is amazing.

Frank Zappa was a true musical genius as a composer and band leader.  While not the greatest talent on the guitar, he was more versatile than just being a musician.

J. S. Bach, the only person I feel comfortable calling a genius. And he most certainly had influence on prog, check out the version of Brandenberg Concerto #3 by The Load.

ClapClap - I am in agreement with that. Also I believe Keith Emerson has used Bach excerpts in some of ELP's tracks.

He's not on the list: Robert Wyatt.

I voted for Peter Hammill though, as he also is a genius in his own way.  Other had enough votes already!

Where is Mr. Zappa? If anyone qualifies, it surely is him. There could also be a case made for the magic of a little team called Lennon and McCartney.

Sice this is a prog forum, I don't think we need to bring in the likes of Mozart, and Beethoven.

In progressive rock, there are few who come close to being true geniuses, but Andy Latimer is the nearest I can think of for his brilliant guitar work and a canon of albums over 30 years that is totally unmatched by any other musician/band.

*bows reverently before such utter wisdom*Wink

Anyway, I agree with what you said before that. Genius is very rare, and personally wouldn't apply such a word to any of the musician listed in the poll. Talent, however, is another matter, and it is undeniable that all of them are extremely talented in their own field.

Pfff, Zappa was horribly underrated on guitar. He is one of the most creative and original guitarists I've heard. He gets my vote, if only for his guitar work alone.

In your poll of "Old School" proggers, you left out another obvious mention, and that is the genius of Magma, Christian Vander. But how about "New School" prog? A stand-out to me is the extremely talented man behind Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson.

That I believe originally came from Thomas Edison, who plenty of people who think they are genuises would snub their noses at, Edison not having a university degree, and mainly invented things for practical sakes of putting food on his table and a roof over is head, not for any ideological symbolism over substance" reasons

Its those who think they are geniuses, are the ones to worry about.

Since I consider genius to involve great skill, vision and the ability to see what others cannot (and this being a prog rock site), I choose Keith Emerson.

If by genius you mean intelligence, Neil Peart is a very smart man. But if you mean musical genius, I'd go with Jon Anderson.

I've voted for Peter Gabriel but it was a tough decision and took me while to come up with. I agree with those who say Zappa should be in the list, the man was a brilliant guitarist, great composer and he took risks too in the search for creativity which many others do not. Keith Emerson and Robert Fripp should also come top of the list but anyone who suggests Jon Anderson, Ritchie Blackmore or Thom Yorke is being utterly absurd.
