Prog is the music we discuss on this site and is reviewed in the archives.

Progressive is simply a broader term (in music) that refers to music that goes "above and beyond" the norm; includes e.g. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, the Beatles.

(That's my definition anyway )

Prog is a name we use to describe a music genre, which isn't always progressive (regressive prog-rock would describe styx)

Cert described it well.

Thanks for the vote(s) of confidence

Sadly, I would not include Radiohead in that list, because they are not in the archives.

You've got to draw the line somehow, and the Archives here are my adopted boundary. Fortunately they're always being added to, and the Admins are wise...

i think rock god only asked the difference between progressive rock (prog rock) and progressive music. probably any structured music that is full of rythm & pattern changes can be called progressive music; ex.: anthony phillips - 1984

The only definitions I found ambivalent are Progressive  and Progressive Rock.

Progressive as an  adjective is a term that qualifies any band that plays music that's different than the common mainstream or a band that's simply beyond their time, like the Beatles for example.

But I believe this is a misuse of the term, because many people use it to describe bands they say keep progressing (When only changing), for example some people say that Genesis was Progressive even in albums as We Can't Dance or Invissible Touch because the music is different to the early albums, something we know it's absurd.

The fact that the music of a band changes from album to album has nothing to do with the genre we all love, bands like Magenta play excellent Progressive Rock that's clearly inspired in the music of the 70's and it's still part of the genre we love.

Progressive Rock as a genre is the music that we usually discuss here which started it's evolution in the late 60's and has certain characteristics, like complex timing, abrupt changes, longer tracks, is non commercial, transcendence, complex lyrics, massive use of keyboards, classical influence, etc. Genre that IMO doesn't include bands like Radiohead or Coldplay

Prog' is simply a contraction used by Progressive Rock fans that fans who write in forums use to save time and valuable bandwith.

progressive rock is music that evolved from the
psychedelic era beginning 1966-67, when San
Francisco went into bloom, Yorkshire glistened and
Berlin found a door in the wall.

It was cultivated in England in the early 70s and
lasted until the mid to late 70s, spilled itself over into
european continent until the mid 80s and pops its
head up rarely in many of genres of music today.

Its a chameleon, its a tiger with no stripes, its
gasous but a solid, it has no form but you feel it. it is
a concoction but not the elixir. And last but not least,
neo-prog, avant garde jazz, emo, symphonic metal
and post rock grew out of its stool as a poison
mushroom!

prog is the opposite of punk maybe?

punk songs are generally short and simple with limited structure and similar riffs
prog is epic well structured pieces of music that are long and have everchanging movements etc

For me, it's quite simple:

Everyone knows what "progressive" means. So the term Progressive Rock was created because the first prog bands broke new ground, tried new things and broke conventions. But over the years they created their own conventions and Prog could not longer be regarded as progressive (IMO). So Progressive Rock is nothing more than a name for a genre. There are as much  progressive bands/musicians outside of the prog genre as there are inside...
So, Progressive Rock is just a name for a genre which was really progressive in the beginning...
