I recently got a Horslips best of and thought it was fantastic and so was wondering which album would be the best to get ------------- Another emotional suicide, overdosed on sentiment and pride |

The Man Who Built America is my favourite, but it's more of a rock album. If you want the folk/prog thing, The Tain is the one for you, or the Book of Invasions. ------------- The world keeps spinning, people keep sinning And all the rest is just bullsh*t -Steve Kilbey |

The Tain - 6* One of the best of the very best albums ever recorded. The Book of Invasions - 5.5* A brilliantly composed and performed concept album. Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part - 4.5* Brilliant debut, more folky than some. Dancehall Sweethearts - 4* Contains some brilliant tracks, but a few don't quite cut it. Roll Back - 5* Old tracks completely reworked acoustically; some are better even than the oriiginals. Drive the Cold Winter Away - 5* It ain't prog but as a traditional album it has few peers. The Unfortunate Cup of Tea - 2.5* Even the band don't like this; it has a few moments. Tracks From the Vaults - 4* A hotchpotch of interesting leftovers The other 4 are not bad, but not really prog. I'm surprised more progheads don't investigate this brilliant band who blend folk, prog and rock so perfectly. |

By the way, Psychedelia, they were PHENOMENAL live (I saw them 11 times). Horslips Live and The Belfast gigs are great but they have recently released a double DVD. Disc 1 is a 2 hour documentary made for Irish TV (RTE) about the band and their influence. The 2nd disc is 19 live tracks from their 70s gigs. It's called The Return of the Dancehall Sweethearts and you can get it on their website http://www.horslips.ie/. Definitely worth it. I'm listening to it now and hoping to see them again one day (they reformed recently and did a gig for RTE which revived enormous interest so they may do a tour). |

No, they're all available from their website (see previous post) or from Charles O'Connor's store in Whitby (The Stonehouse Emporium) which is available via a link from their website for those too far off to visit in person. I have them all on vinyl, but bought them all on CD for use in the car within the last 6 months. My local independent in York has them, and any music shop in Ireland will have their entire stock since their last LP went platinum in Ireland, as did their DVD. |

I personally never really thought of Horslips as prog, but the proggier album is easily The Tain

| I think 'The Book Of Invasions' is still a prog album, albeit quite a rocky one. That's my own personal favourite- in fact, it's a favourite album, full stop. |

The Book of Invasions and Dancehall Sweethearts are my top faves. Both contain strong and memorable songs and also instrumental inventions. The Blind Can't Lead the Blind from the latter album is a typical masterpiece of a song by the Horslips formula and it's presently THE song I can't get enough of. The Tain is also very strong. The most uneven album may surely be The Unfortunate Cup of Tea but even that album contains a few killer songs, particularly impressive is Turn Your Face to the Wall, a nominee of mine for the top five Horslips songs-category. |

I think The Book Of Invasions is the only one I've heard, many years ago, maybe one other that I don't recognize, possibly Aliens.

The Tain is their best for me. An often doomy concept album, kind of like The Chieftains meets Black Sabbath. I absolutely love Dearg Doom, especially its piledriving Celtic rock ending - sheer musical heaven. I've heard only three: Happy to Meet, Sorry to Part; Drive the Cold Winter Away; and Book of Invasions. Of those, it's definitely Happy to Meet. I even got that on vinyl when I was in Dublin. Edit: From the comments here, I might have to check out The Tain... |

I would definitely recommend The Tain. It's consistently good with barely a duff track on it and is certainly their most proggy effort. | I've only heard The Tain, but I really recommend it to anyone interested in a folky, Celtic rock adventure. A lot of energy and fun going on on the record. Don't expect anything spectacular in terms of sheer progressiveness though. |

The Tain and The Book of Invasions were soundtracks of my youth at sailing events all round Ireland (along with Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, The Undertones and SLF). You cannot go wrong with either The Tain or The Book of Invasions. I've always had a soft sport for Dancehall Sweethearts. In my opinion, their two best studio albums are The Tain and Book Of Invasions. These two are essential for Prog (Folk) fans. Also, the live albums Horslips Live and Live At The O2 are excellent. Other good albums include Aliens, Dancehall Sweethearts, and Happy To Meet, Sorry To Part Great band! |
