This is from the Wikipedia so it must be true, but: "The precursor to [Bachman-Turner Overdrive] was the band Brave Belt,
formed in 1970 by Randy Bachman of The Guess Who with Chad Allan (also of The
Guess Who), Robbie Bachman and Fred Turner. An original plan included
Keith Emerson of The Nice, though he was dropped due to
illness. After two moderately successful Brave Belt albums, Allan was replaced
by Tim Bachman, the third of the Bachman brothers, and the band changed its name
to Bachman-Turner Overdrive."
I love BTO and I respect Emerson. If this is true I think this would have
been a great group but I don't think it would have lasted long. I don't see
Emerson and Bachman being able to work together for very long.
Or maybe it's someones joke on Wikipedia. Interesting idea if it is.
Anybody have any other info?

I like Bachman Turner Overdrive!! Another canadian wonderful band!
Didn't know of that Emerson plan, though. I would like to know what they could have done together...what kind of music or prog?

I was aware of a connection between Emerson and Randy Bachman.I thought maybe Bachman had been sounded out as a potential guitarist for ELP but I think you've explained it now.Thanks.

ELP's classical mode mostly came from Emerson.
I wonder how that would have fit in BTO's 3 chord basic blue collar rocker sound?
BTO would have benefit more with a blues pianist/organist.

If Emerson had joined and introduced a classic influence, maybe they could have called the band "Bach(man)-Turner Overdrive".

Wow, you'd think something like this would have been in Bachman's book that he wrote a few years ago. I guess this is why Wikipedia is known as "truth by popular vote". I seriously doubt this version of the story.
Bachman was one of the guitarists considered to join ELP before they stuck to being a trio.
According to Bachman, he chose his bandmates in Bravebelt and BTO on the basis of dependability (no drugs or alcohol), not on great musicianship. If Emerson did join the mix, Bachman would not have gone down the road of simple blue collar three chord rock. I don't think Emerson really considered this very seriously (I have no recollection of talking about this in his autobiography Pictures Of An Exhibitionist), but it is not the first time I hear about it, usually with the same laughter. and even if they had formed a group together, Keith's personna would've instantly clashed with the Bachman who are mormons and categorically anti-drugs and alcohol.
And Keith would've been completely outweighed in Bachman Turning Overweight.

 I remember Donald K. Donald ( ex- Montreal booking agent ) mentioning in an interview on CHOM-FM that BTO's backstage demands were very FOOD oriented
