Deadwing by Porcupine Tree.

Kind of.

There's a big Steven Wilson influence on Damnation, so listening to some Porcupine Tree albums, specifically the later ones, will probably be a good idea.

It is very hard to match an album up to Damnation. Try PoS's 12:5, amazing album, but for me it doesn't equal damnation. If you're looking for more light stuff from Opeth I would check out Blackwater Park.

I agree. Deadwing just doesn't do it for me, but I would definitely grab In Absentia if you haven't heard it already.

I'd be inclined to suggest some late Anekdoten too actually.  Another excellent Swedish prog band.

From Within is the album that comes to mind.

You might enjoy "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" by Katatonia, they are the band that sounds closest to opeth to me.

you also could take Paatos' Timeloss ;(except for the last track) i think it has a similar atmosphere with Damnation.

ANEKDOTEN's "From Within" and "Gravity" are very close matches! Try also MORTE MACABRE's "Symphonic Holocaust" (no vocs + more symphonic).

Agreed! Also don't miss their later albums, they have more electronic sounds in them, but very dark mood with mellotrons, "Silince of Another Kind" is really perfect album!

Try Green Carnation's Acoustic Verses.
And I also agree with what Geck0 said.

download the two acoustic non album tracks by opeth "still day beneath the sun" and "patterns in the ivy II". part one of the damnation album, deliverance is also recommended, prepare to be blown away.

Late Katatonia is a good match. I would go for "The Great Cold Distance", seems to be more on the mellow side.

But I must stress that you should check out a different album by Opeth... Damnation is fine but it doesn't display the full songwriting power of Opeth as it leaves out their metal side. Check out "Blackwater Park" or "Ghost Reveries" for the best of both worlds.

do what i did once when i was bored. take all the softer songs of Opeth and make a mix CD. it's nice to have when you just want to listen to the mellow side of the band without constantly changing discs. (although since i have iTunes, i dont do CD's anymore)

was gonna do it for the heavy songs, but i realized it was pointless, their albums are 80% heavy anyway...

None that I know of. Well, some artists/bands are "kind-of" similar, but ... not really.
