I picked up the new GPS (basically Asia with Ryo Okumoto in place of Geoff Downes) today and it's not too bad. Probably won't crack the top 5, 6, or 7 in my year end best, but it sounds pretty good. I'm not a huge Chris Slade fan, so having Schellen in there on drums already upgrades the sound.

Anyone else thinking of getting this?

I http://www.progtology.com/db/reviews/_auto_9080657.xhtml - reviewed it on my website ... I really liked it (8.9/10). It's only prog related though in my book.

Yeah, it's pretty good so far. I like Payne's bass playing more than his singing, as it can be a bit too forced at times. Still, the songs are well structured. They're not short and poppy, but (at least the first few) are around 6-8 minutes, so there are some substance to them.

I had a feeling that was John Kalodner on the cover, though. That guy looks the same today as he did 20 years ago.

I asked ProgLucky to add them to the Archives, and he did it. Review, my friends!

I guess the genre teams (crossover, heavy) will not be amused ... Wink

I'm interested in anything that features Guthrie Govan on guitar. As far as I'm concerned, he is the top guitarist out there right now, though I'm much more inclined to listen to his solo album than GPS. I don't particularly care for this sound.

Dang, I just noticed this is a very old thread.

Yeah, I listened to GPS yesterday and it's not really holding up for me. Payne's vocals are just so pretentious and I feel he THINKS he's better than he actually is.

They removed it, because somebody said that it's no prog. Is he deaf?

Actually, that should be they.  It had been rejected by several teams, I believe.  It wasn't just removed because people said it wasn't Prog enough, but because it was added without team (not just individual) consent (there is a process here).  I don't know the music that well and did not evaluate it, but from what I've heard, it sounded more AOR/ melodic rock (as I think of AOR) than Prog.  Prog-Related (to whatever degree) I would have thought, but not that Prog.  And of course Asia, which it shares personnel with and stylistic similarities, is only considered Prog-Related here, and elsewhere -- somewhat proggy (more melodic rock/ AOR than Prog).  Of course it has Ryo Okumoto of Spock's Beard, and I tend to think of SB as very much on the melodic rock side (not that adventurous, and not that progressive or out there).

No one is deaf, the band was submitted for evaluation, as usual, and it was rejected by several teams.

The problem is, it was still added - and you sustain to have simply asked ProgLucky to add them, at which he complied! - without photo, without biography, without anything except the album (I think).

The problem is that it was added to a specific genre for which it was specifically rejected.

Due to the problems above, GPS was removed from the site, because, at the moment, it was added without permission or approval.

I think this thread sits best here in the Prog related lounge, due to the close Asia connection. We shoudl clarify that the "Asia" concerned is the more recent one which made albums such as "Silent nation".

I would confirm too that GPS were removed as the addition did not follow the correct procedure. They have never been considered for Prog Related though, as no one has asked us to do so.

I am quite proud to be one of the deaf that rejected - and would reject again - a band whose music is about as close to prog as Night Ranger

Ha just found this thread! No points to add but I tried to add them to Art Rock and got the "related to Prog-Related" statement. Ah good times. Listening to them now by the way and I see that they are just good old rock.

Sorry, you're right. I didn't know the rules of adding a new band. I just showed ProgLucky two edited songs, but if somebody asks me, I can send the whole one. And sorry for the rude behaviour.

Believe me, it's prog. Please reply (sorry for being so late...Confused)!

as one of the mightly AR team who originally  judged it.. .I have but one thing to say man...

micky's axiom #1

what is prog to one.. is very often not prog to another

the site has teams here that set the standards for the site and decide who does and does not get added...  sometimes we add bands that some do not agree with... sometimes bands are rejected that some may not agree with.

just the way the site works... a necessary evil less we have open additions here ..trust me.. after 3 weeks.. this site would look like allmusic.com since every swinging dick here has his... and her .. own idea of what prog is.  Not saying it would be a bad thing to have a site that inclusive.. but the fact is.. we don't.  That is the way the site operates... it's a take it or leave it kind of proposition.  Some sites.. hell.. almost all other prog sites are more inclusive than this one..  but aren't half the resourse this is.  So you take the good with the bad..
