Why are these bands "competing?" Why do I have to prefer one over the other? Can't we just like BOTH, and let it go at that?
I think that those who have no ideas for an original, interesting thread turn to composing these dumb polls.
 Really: what is the point of such polls?
 They are a symptom of the increasing decline of a once interesting, mature music forum into a mere chat room typified by very short posts, petty insults ("noob," etc.)and "I bought this CD today"-type posts that say nothing of interest to anyone besides the poster.Where did the wit and provocative thought go? We are being increasingly dominated by the lowest common denominator.
I don't know what the solution is, Dick, but maybe banning these dumb "X vs Y" polls would be a good first step toward taking things up a notch on the intelligence scale.

Look at some of the responses to these kinds of polls: in fairness, though the poll may even ask "which do you like better, and why," most respondents to such polls will simply write "X" or "Y."
Duh.
WTF is even remotely interesting about such polls and posts?

I realise your questions to be mostly rhetorical ones, aren't they, Peter?
It is impossible to prevent short answers, no matter if one likes or dislikes it. Of course, the main problem is not in the pointless polls themselves but in the attitude to them -- hence those pointless short responses: "Smith" - "Yes, sir!" - "Who's better, X or Y?" - "X" (honestly, sometimes the answers to the poll question remind me of pupils in the school lesson who do their difficult duty (even burden...))...
On the other hand, even those pointless polls may lead to rather interesting discussions caused by more or less deep answers from the respondents...

You do the best thing you can -- you write in right and intelligent language, which, hopefully, will not be ignored by some visitors and will cause them to pay attention to their own way of writing. Once at least one person will turn more aware of the standard formal writing -- some work is already done.

Peter, I find it amazing how you are able to turn a poll about The Doors vs. Cream into a debate whether prog-metal should be here. That takes some real talent. Then again, this seems to be your specialty -- turning innocent, harmless topics into your own, personal vendetta against prog-metal (or whatever might be bothering you at that moment). You ask us (the youth) not to be offended, and yet, you're constantly condescending towards us, you apparently think most of us are inarticulate, immature idiots who are not able to write a coherent sentence, but hey, it's all in good fun, eh? -------------

not so much blah,blah...so, UK/Europe PROG bands as Genesis (INCLUDE GABRIEL, of course) or Yes, or Gong, etc, with all of respect, NEVER made SO MAGICK, IN THE SPACE OF TIME, progressive rocksongs as Jim's "The End" (from FIRST album of The Doors, 1967(!!!) or "The Celebration Of The Lizards" (from "Absolutely Live"- 1970!!!).
IMO, of course.

Jimbo, I'm genuinely sorry to have offended you. I just see this poll as symptomatic of something larger, and ongoing.
But I will remove my most offending posts (some of the above will go elsewhere, where it will be more fitting), because they personally offend you. (They were not meant to, believe or not.)
It's not so much that I doubt overall youth intelligence here -- it's just that I see little effort given to displaying that intelligence in written form, or even to writing about anything that's interesting to more than just the writer. That's a crucial difference.
Really, I suppose I should gracefully accept reality, shut up about the issue of metal as prog, shut up about the (significant or not) PA generation gap, and go away.

Peter, I have nothing against you, and I certainly do not wish for you to leave this place... You're one of the most interesting and colourful people around here. I just wish you wouldn't always blame the younger members and prog-metal for every single problem on this website. You just need to accept that the popularity of progarchives has grown significantly from the early days. It's only natural that the new members tend to be of younger age. They may not have much in common with you, and Progarchives may not be the "playground" for you and your buddies it once were. Just accept the fact and adapt to the situation. Choose the topics you wish to participate in and leave the others alone. That's what I do, and it works for me pretty well. -------------

Good advice, and I generally try to follow that rule.
But I'd certainly be happier here, and feel more at home, were I a metal fan, and perhaps 20-30 years younger.
 (Not to mention unconcerned by poor grammar & spelling!
 )What can I say -- I am feeling down, and I do have obsessive tendencies.

I, too, like both bands but I believe that Cream had more influence on
young musicians at the time because Clapton showed that guitarists
could break out of the 30-second lead-break mindset and go with the
flow into more freeform and extended jams. The Doors were more of
a social phenomenon and made music that expanded the consciousness of
the general public. But it's hard to deny that Cream paved the
way for groups like Led Zep and even Zappa to explore the uncharted
lands of guitar-based progressive rock.

| I think they are both great bands, and I try to keep my opinions of them seperate but in a poll like this I probably would go for The Doors. Jim Morrison has some great lyrics, and so does Cream, but I like Jim Morrison's lyrics better. Don't get me wrong I like Cream as well. |
