Discuss.

Have you ever listened to Tiles? I can't think of another prog band that takes the crappy Black-era style and makes it good.

Umm... what?
I don't hear any trace of Metallica in their music, and I know their first three albums very well. I do hear a lot of Rush though, and also a lot of freshness and versatility. They have varied and complex compositions (without becoming overwhelmingly complex), they're catchy and unpredictable, and basically I would say they have what it takes to be a great band. Not many people seem to have heard of them, although I think they're one of the finest bands to have emerged in the prog scene in the nineties; their contract with InsideOut is quite indicative of that and they should release a new album next year, if all goes well.
But they're definitely not comparable to Metallica or any other metal band for that matter, as they're clearly rock-oriented. Rush is actually the only valid comparison I can think of. Maybe you mean a different Tiles...
Anyway, a quick link for those who don't know them: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=464 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=464

Because Metallica has nothing intelligent to offer. Neither most Prog bands anyway.

I've got Fence The Clear, and the vocalist is channelling Hetfield's voice through most of the album, with lots of Metallica/Black-inspired riffs and melodies...

They are probably the most famous Rush-inspired band there is! Seriously it is their raison-d'etre...

Because a small amount of bands on this line also has traces of original thought, wich is a think I look for not only here, but also in electronica, contemporary music, indie, etc. Recommendations, suggestions and comments help in the task of discovering bands such as 65 Days of Static or Bark Psychosis. Also read a lot on allmusic for that matters. Plus, the experimental post rock avant garde rio specimens are very well described here.

Tiles is near to Rush or Fates Warning, but not to Metallica.

Yeah, I've seen Tiles and Metallica live and I don't hear any similarities between their sound.

I haven't heard this band Tiles that is strangely
dominating this thread, but in answer to the question, Metallica
haven't inspired any prog bands with their music because in my opinion,
Metallica are pretty dull, weak and insipid as rock bands go. I think
they are grossly overrated and I believe there are many bands who
produce far better material in a much heavier manner such as Opeth and
Machine Head. Just my opinion but I'd reckon there's a few on here who
would agree.

My god. Some of you people are awfully closed-minded. You hear "Metallica" and start to cry like it's a f**king sin. Nevermind that Justice was actually a fairly complex and progressive album.
If you listen to the majority of the Tiles' Fence The Clear album, it's quite apparent that the vocalist is taking a HUGE influence from James Hetfield's voice, not just in the tone, but in the phrasing and melodic stylings. I haven't heard any of the other albums, so it may not be the case all over, but it's definitely apparent here. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you have to go into denial.

You didn't say that at first. I don't believe people would have reacted this way if you would have stated what, more precisely, is on your mind when you say Tiles is comparable to Metallica.
That doesn't mean they are or aren't of course. And obviously the Rush element is much more prevelant, at least in the 8 or 10 Tiles songs I've heard here and there. Then again Tiles borrows a lot of things from many groups.

I listened to Tiles... Honestly, instrumentally, they're more like a Rush replica...
Not much originality

I think TILES are great, they have a very good singer and some really excellent tunes.I prefer "presents of mind".By the way,i don't hear METALLICA man, just RUSH once and a while.Terry Brown,RUSH's old producer has produced all their records,i think.

They're openly inspired by Rush, produced by Terry Brown, CD artwork by Hugh Syme, the Presents of Mind CD cover even looks like Hemispheres.... and we've got a thread about their ties to Metallica?
But don't get me wrong - I wouldn't say that Tiles is ripping anybody off. They have some great, unique guitar and some pretty original sounding music too. Just listen to Window Dressing if you think they are just a clone.
BTW, this is all IMHO...

I don't think they're a clone... I'm just intrigued by the vocal approach they took on the one album I've heard, that I haven't heard on any other prog metal album...

As I listen to Fence The Clear for the first time the very first thing I realize about the vocals is the 80's-metal influenced sound. I'm not sure if I'd call it metallica influenced but it's similar to a degree with it's wailing charactistics, whereas on another Tiles album ("Presents of Time"), this is not evident nearly as much and they sound even closer to Rush.
Maybe those who disagreed with you haven't heard Fence The Clear, and those who have agreed with you haven't heard Presents of Time.

I own a few Tiles Cd`s I can`t say I like the vocals much, for some reason they annoy me , but the music is very good prog rock/metal like later fates warning / or mid period rush but definitely not a trace of metallica at all ! In the Tiles sound I also here some king crimson influence with their latest CD
Presents of Mind is Tiles known Gem
