go to last.fm download the free software create a profile, whenever you play songs on your computer last fm will keep track. I no longer use it because I no longer play songs on my computer I use a stereo.

So it keeps track if I play songs off i-tunes?

I understand how to play songs with last.fm, but not how to choose them...

But thank you.

Information about nearby gigs was a fantastic idea, anyway!

last.fm and progtology.com are two totally separate websites. If you want to use progtology.com signature images which display your last.fm profile statistics you first need to get a last.fm account, install their software and make sure that the songs you play are registered by the last.fm software and appear on the last.fm website in your profile.

Then you can simply create an account at www.progtology.com and enter your last.fm username in the signature settings.

I think that the biggest disadvantage of last.fm is that they only register some of the tracks an user listens to. Mobile players, vinyl, CD, Napster player, streaming radio, iTunes ... it all doesn't register.

I'd like to encourage anyone who's using my signature service to also rate your favorite albums and add them to your signature ... you have much more control over the chart positions, and you can separate the lists by genre, which generally makes the lists more meaningful.

How could a web site possibly register what you play on a mobile player or vinyl?

it can't - and that's one of the reasons why last.fm will never be an accurate representation of what people are listening to. It's a good aproximation for some users, but I prefer a website which lets me control which albums are listed, and how I rate them.

How do I add albums to my collection and review them?

Posted By: progismylife

Okay, I found the collection builder section of my profile, and went to the Select Albums tab, but when I clicked on a letter on the alphabet list on the left hand side it wouldn't let me.

Ok, there are two ways:

1. Go to the album page, open the tab labeled "Review Editor". There you can select whether you own the album and assign genres, ratings, prog status and tags. You can also enter a date of purchase, write a review, submit comments for the tracks.

2. You can also use the "collection builder" ... the link is in the upper right corner (when you're logged in). The tabs take longer to load, but if you're planning to add many albums it's probably the quickest solution. But it's not yet feature complete ... you can choose purchase info, genres, ratings, prog status and tags, but only on the album level, any you can't yet submit reviews or track comments.

Have a try ... let me know if you have further questions.Smile

BTW: I know that the website is somewhat confusing ... I'll try to add more explanatory texts, maybe even a tutorial.

For the option 1 - how do I know it is added to my collection?

Posted By: MikeEnRegalia

^  whether the album is part of your collection or not depends on what you select in the purchase info dropdown. For example, if you select "I bought this album ..." then it will be shown as part of your collection, if you select "I sold the album" then it won't.

I think I'll replace this dropdown with a few buttons eventually ... Smile

You must be a fellow software engineer. Why can't we for once agree on simplifying the user interface, instead of forcing unknowing users to browse through tons of even more confusing manuals? LOL

I'm trying to do both. Unfortunately some user interfaces cannot be simplified beyond a certain point, and then you need some hints as to how to use it.

But I think I can simplify Progtology.com some more ... Smile

Um the collection builder says "Album couldn't be loaded" if I try and use it. But most of it is working now.

Cool. Let me know if I can lend a hand (next year, I'll be off on holidays in less than a week).

If you have a problem with the collection builder, please post it on the discussion page of Progtology.com or write me a private message, I'll try to find a solution. Please try to tell me exactly what doesn't work.Smile
