What, do you think, is the best album recorded by Geneis?

In my opinion, it's definitely Foxtrot but it's all about opinion. Any of their 5-star masterpieces can be chosen depending on the persons taste. I think Supper's Ready is their finest moment.

In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion

Do you think that the Peter Gabriel era was greater or the Phil Collins era?

Trespass by a mile, it is everything prog is about.....and the, most underrated prog album.

The best album is Foxtrot and by quite a margin... not only Supper's Ready but all the damn record is perfect... that album finally "broke the ice" that had always stood between me and Genesis. As for the eras, I would say there's no comparison: with Collins they only had 2 really prog albums, and a couple more "pop-prog" decent ones.... with Gabriel they had 5 (I'm counting since Tresspass) true progressive rock albums, and among those, one masterpiece of all time (Foxtrot), one great album (SEBTP), one flawed concept album (TLLDOB) and a weak, yet never bad recored (Nursery Cryme)...
So Foxtrot and Gabriel-era

The only five star album they made IMO was 'Wind and Wuthering', so you could argue that Phil Collins era was better than the Gabriel era, well at least for two albums.
Everything before Wind and Wuthering, whilst having some classic songs on them, are also interspersed with some patchy, weak songs. Consistency was never a great Genesis trademark. The band members themselves have been very critical of some of their earlier work. From an historical standpoint though in progressive rock, you should own/listen to all their earlier albums.

You've got to be kidding! Your asking this on a prog site, everyone is going to answer Gabriel almost without exception.
Foxtrot is their best album by some way for me. Selling England... would be equal to it if it wasnt for More Fool Me which is a dredful song.

Did anyone notice that the solo from "Ripples" (A trick of the tale) sounds like it is being played backwards?

It's true. Peter Gabriel era is better but ATOTT was the first LP without Gabriel and the vibe was the same. This album is great. All these musicians was on top, your skills to compose and play were amazing on that time.

All Genesis albums through 'Trick' are brilliant. Foxtrot is indeed among the greatest prog records of all time but to pit it against equally great works such as 'Selling' and 'Lamb' ignores a lot-- it's like saying 'Dark Side' is without doubt Floyd's best, which misses not only the point of progressive music, but the treasure trove of great music on all the albums.

A Trick of the Tail is my favourite Genesis album, and I prefer the Collins era. I find the Gabriel era music gauche. Though Foxtrot and SEBTP are 5-star albums, they are more than matched by ATOTT and WAW. Gabriel and Genesis both got better when PG left. Just one fool's opinion.

You are not a fool and I agree with you, though Foxtrot and SEBTP are *** star albums.

Foxtrot by a mile IMO. Selling England has some weak moments while Lamb is up and down.ATOTT is underrated but still not to the same level of Foxtrot.

To be honest I enjoy listening to all of SEBTP, Foxtrot, Trespass, LLDOB, NC and ATOTT. Favourite would be Foxtrot but all of them are masterpieces.

Nursery Cryme is my personal favourite, closely followed by Foxtrot.

As a matter of curiosity, how do people rate the different Genesis albums overall ? My personal ratings would be as follows :
1 Selling England
2 Foxtrot
3 Nursery Cryme / The Lamb
5 Trick of the Tail / Wind & Wuthering / Trespass
Then there would be an enormous gap before :
8 Duke
9 And Then There Were 3
I don't really think of any of the albums after Duke this as being 'true' Genesis,' so I won't list them here.

I only have problems with the first two spots, Foxtrot is solid, no fillers but Nursery Cryme has The Musical Box and Fountain of Salmacis, almost a tie but today this is my personal rating.
- Foxtrot
- Nursery Cryme
- Trespass
- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
- Selling England by the Pound
- Wind & Wuthering
- A Trick of the Tail
- From Genesis to the Revelatuion (Far from the previous)
Couldn't care less for the other studio albums.

Funny, I follow this kind of Genesis threads since I joined Prog Archives early 2004 and this is the first time that so many go for Foxtrot I am glad about this because in my opinion this is a groundbreaking album, so powerful, alternating and elaborate with Supper's Ready as the best prog epic ever, Watcher Of The Skies with the amazing Mellotron intro and Get'em Out By Friday as mindblowing heavy prog And Wind And Wuthering is my second best, such a wonderful 24-carat symphonic prog album with amazing interplay between Hackett and Banks
My Genesis studio album top 5:
1) Foxtrot
2) Wind And Wuthering
3) The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
4) Nursery Cryme
5) Selling England By The Pound

I consider Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway as my favourites, I love them in the same way for different reasons and I really can't choose just one.
My top five/six:
1. Selling England By The Pound / The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway;
2. Nursery Crime;
3. Foxtrot;
4. A Trick Of The Tail;
5. Genesis Live.
