If Pink Floyd is the benchmark for progressive rock in England during the 70's  and Tangerine Dream the benchmark for progressive rock in Germany during the 70's is Lard Free the benchmark for progressive rock in France during the 70's? Try the first 3 albums, Lard Free, Im Around About Midnight and Spiral Malax(III) for an opionion.

What do you think?

HOLY SH*T!  DallasBryan gave FIVE STARS to one of them, and FOUR to another.  THEY MUST BE THE BEST BAND EVER, cause DallasBryan doesn't trash their ratings!

I don't consider Floyd to be the benchmark for English 70s prog.

They're stunning albums, no doubt about it!

I only have their live album "Unnamed" from 1998. I like it but have not venture further into their studio albums. I know some of the work on the live album pre-date material from their first album, so it is a varied affair. I have definitely been thinking about looking into getting one of their studio albums soon, which one would people recommend?

Don't know about those benchmark theories of yours, Dallas.

But I've got all the Lard Free albums, and love them a lot more than the albums Pink Floyd were releasing at the time. (Have the live 71-72 too.) You can't go wrong with any of them, they're all great.

I'll reccomend I'm Around Midnight as the first album to check out. It's a perfect, unique mix of jazzrock, kraut and progressive electronic. A five star classic.

Unnamed is just as good as their historical album, but rather different. Try out their debut which is stunning and mind boggling (especially with a doobie), while the third album resembles a cross of two eras of Tangerine Dream (sort of a marriage of Zeit and Ricochet).

Lard Free is definitely one of the better and more experimental groups coming from France, but their works remained much too unknown and obscure to have any kind of impact on the public. At least compared to Floyd and TD.

I've heard a lot of good things about this band along with Heldon, but I haven't had the time to listen to them. I'll be sure to get one of their albums whenever I have the time along with one from Heldon.

I have only their III album and I think it is great, but I don't consider these bands mentioned as benchmarks for the prog rock.

Pinhas plays in Lard Free's debut album (the red one with the knife) and this gives this album an edge of the others. He sounds like King Fripp.
