My favourite thus far is Sacrament where they manage to creat their most beautiful, original and complex songs, in my opinion.
It is followed by their first effort Ignis Fatuus, which is a melange of tracks recorded over a few years and while you can hear the inconsistencies it is a very good mainly folk album with great tracks like The Withering Of The Boughts, Cryptomenysis, Snowfall , John Dee's Lament, Now In These Fairy Lands ...
Then comes Storm Season which marks their newer sound which is more metallish, more aggressive, if you will. This one is a veyr good mixture of their prog side with their heavier side.
As for Ex-Tenebris, it represents the movement from the folkish Ignis to the more proggish Sacrament and while being a good effort, to me it is the least favourable, but still a recommended album.
As for their last... well, let's just say I am not the biggest fan of this one.

I love 'Ignis Fatuus', but, like avestin said before me, it have some inconsistencies, cause is an album made by many people that came and go during the long time recording sessions.

Then my vote goes to 'Storm Season' that keeps the dark climate of the old times and adds some weighty guitars, with the ex-bassist Johannes Saeboe acting like a 2nd guitar player, helping Jacob to create a dark and consistent masterpiece.

It's a shame that the new album, 'Signal to Noise', very simple in comparision with the anterior works, came without Saeboe. I miss him...Unhappy

To start, I would get either Ignis Fatuus, Sacrament or Storm Season. IF is a very much a folk album with a hint of Symphonic in the two longer songs at the end. Sacrament is blend of folk and symphonic but feels a little short to me. Storm Season is a symphonic album with some very strong compositions. The second guitar is playing some pretty heavy riffs throughout which means some people have said its metal but I dont think it is.

As for the other two, ET is similar to Ignis Fatuus but with a more striped-down sound, their weakist album IMO. STN is more poppy album but has some exelent songs on it.

In defense of Ignis Fatuus, I like the patchwork feel of the album; similar to the Arkham & the first Proto-Kaw releases (or more correctly 'compilations'), to name but two.

I do not have Ex-Tenebris and Sacrament. From the rest Ignis Fatuus is my favourite - I'd rate it close 4 stars. Storm Season is also very good but more heavier and more straight forward with metal touches - 3.5 stars anyway. Their last was just a disappointement for me.

Storm Season.

I prefer the more metallic feel and Sylvia Erichsen's voice is at its best here.  Signal to Noise I've only heard the once and it didn't do much for me, so I'll give it a listen again soon.

I played their debut at Christmas and even my grandmother, who's in her late '70s enjoyed it.  It is uneven, because, as others have right said, it was not made as an album, but is a selection tracks.  Sacrament is their second best album and Ex Tenebris isn't as bad as everyone says.

I think the first two (the first one in particular) sound most promising, judging from the songs I have heard. I have Sacrament, and though the music is great, I don't like the vocals on it,neither the poppy parts (often connected). Also heard Storm season, not my cup of tea. The songs I have heard from the first one are IMO very good, though.  One day I will buy it.

Storm Season was my first encounter with WW, and remains my fave, but all 5 have their merits, and are all good albums. Signal to Noise is very polished and a bit more immediate, but the sound on the later two is som much better than the first 3.

I still maintain that there are some pretty flat and out of tune sounds on the early 2, especially on lead guitar, and on the first there is some really clumsy drumming, but in general its great stuff.

I don't hear any neo-prog on Storm Season... and I happen to like the metal moments.  I'm glad they didn't go too overboard with them (not that I hate prog metal, I like some of it).  I was hoping they'd continue with the prog metal influences on Signal to Noise though.  Trude Eidtang is a great singer though, but I still prefer Sylvia Erichsen.

Saddly I only have their debut, but I really enjoy it. It's a very calm album with a nice and mellow atmosphere. I'm thinking on getting Sacrament next.

White Willow is one of my favourite bands... They really made great albums but I still keep my vote for Ifnis Fatuus. Second and very close: Ex Tenebris. Third: Storm Season...

 Hi all!

I recently listened to some White Willow tracks, and they have charmed me! Can anyone help in getting their music? Is there an online store or something where I can find it? Or any other solution... :)
 Thanks!

I love the first album. It has so many good songs on it, great atmosphere, value for money!!

I never tried the later albums yet. I've been told they're much darker. I'm not sure if I like that.

The first album was a big surprise at the time, though there was a bit of everything so it lacked cohesion (and I really like it!). And their last records, I find them quite similar one to each other and not so interesting. For me, Ex Tenebris is the best and the most original (and I am a great fan of Mattias Olsson as well)
