ProgArchives Collaborator’s Top 10 Prog Albums Of 2006:

1.

KAYO DOT- DOWSING ANENOME WITH COPPER TONGUE

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=9743 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=9743

This sophomore release by the US Prog-Metallers swept the Collaborator’s vote by a considerable margin. Carrying on the experimentation of debut album “Choirs Of The Eye”, this album combines metal with elements of Jazz and Post-Rock without any of those styles necessarily under-pinning the main compositional whole. It’s not free-form Jazz, it doesn’t contain any riffs and can sometimes feel like a dark and twisted voyage into the abyss - but is executed with so much aplomb that it works. And then some!

Prog Reviewer and respected Prog-Metal aficionado "Trickster F." came to this conclusion in his glowing 5 Star review:
“The aim of this album is to make an attentive listener think carefully and reconsider his values in music, it is not meant to impress someone just because it can. Approach with caution, thoughtfulness and an open mind - this album is too important to be misunderstood”

2.

PFM - STATI DI IMMAGIONAZIONE

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=13442 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=13442

It’s 36 years since the release of PFM’s seminal ISP album “Storia Di Un Minuto” and only Mussida and Di Cioccio remain from the original line up but somehow they’ve managed to create something both quintessentially PFM and yet a new and modern presentation of the band’s style. The album is totally instrumental and yet is as lyrical as any of the classics from their glorious past.

Legendary PA Special Collaborator & Prog Reviewer Erik Neuteboom was ecstatic in his admiration:
“In my opinion PFM has made a masterpiece and this is their best studio effort ever, what a dynamic, varied and captivating album, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

3.

STEVE HACKETT - WILD ORCHIDS

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=12751 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=12751

Another Prog thoroughbred eases into the top 5, this time virtuoso guitarist Steve Hackett who has consistently released top quality material since he left Genesis 30 years ago. Continuing on from the excellent “To Watch The Storms” and employing the classic expressions of “Metamorpheus” this album sees a blend of Rock, Classical and Jazz with just a hint of darkness to keep things spicy and one might add idiosyncratic, if not downright eccentric.

Symphonic Prog Team Member “Bhikkhu” enthused:
“Wow, and again, wow. What a treat to have a progressive icon delivering music of this caliber, this late in his career. I would have been satisfied if was just decent. The previews had it looking pretty good, but this is one of the few times that expectations have been far exceeded.”

http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=89586 - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=89586

=============================================================

4.
PURE REASON REVOLUTION - THE DARK THIRD

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=11810 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=11810

These English rockers create their own special blend of spacey Art Rock and are gradually building a big reputation for themselves. This album builds on the promise of their mini-album “Cautionary Tales…” and delivers in spades. PRR’s  blend of Beach Boy like harmonies, Floydian arrangements and Indie band street cred all go towards creating a surprisingly fresh and uplifting sound.

Prog Reviewer “Equality 7-2521” had this to say:
“Never once while listening to this album do I realize I'm laying in bed with headphones on or even listening to music at all. An experience, rather than music, would be a better way to describe the wonders contained here.”

http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=97036 - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=97036

=============================================================

5.
TOOL - 10,000 DAYS

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=11612 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=11612

Prog-Metallers Tool are not a band to rush out a release every 12 months so manage to build up a head of feverish anticipation with news of every new album. This follows on some five years after the triumph that was “Lateralus” and judging by the vote they didn’t let anyone down. Always experimental Tool confounded some of their fans with some of their musical explorations but this album hit #1 on the Billboard Album Chart which suggests popular success whilst maintaining their integrity.

Prog Reviewer “Zitro” was overcome with superlatives:

“An absolute masterpiece that should be considered a Masterpiece and mentioned in music history as an artistic peak in modern music. This is my favourite album after the 70s and easily the best metal-related album I have heard so far.”

http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=77342 - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=77342

The results are rather surprising IMO. Shocked

None of my favourites are near the top, but that was to be expected.

Well, if anything, this re-assured me that I need to get that Kayo Dot album.

Coming out of my "exile" to tell you Tony that you did a very good work on presenting this list.

On aonther note, I am sorry to see that Deluge Grander, Zaar, Nemo and NeBeLNeST are not higher (they are in the list, only after the first 10), but then again, it's just a list (but I'll keep my criticism for another time, to not ruin people's time).

BTW - had to stop listening to Popul Vuh's Tantric Songs to listen to that Agalloch album again.

Not that bad.... No Flower Kings though...

The only one I think is really a weird selection is Agalloch's one.... man, that band HAS NO DRUMMER, the one that plays there is barely capable... We can't praise an album if there's an instrument being played at a below-average level... The songs are repetitive and truly incoherent, boring, I just can't get Agalloch.

But very good list anyway. Just one out of ten I think shouldn't be aplauded, so, very good!

I think there is a slight error in your list. You probably meant to put Agalloch at #1 instead of #6. Wink

Great work Tony, and you weren't nearly as slow compiling as everyone was complaining you would be :)

I have to say that despite reading everyones votes the PFM at #2 came as a suprise. And all of my votes made the top 10 except Tunnels, big suprise there.

An interesting list...but a satifying one overall I think. Though very surprised with that #4.

Have #1, #3, and #5. Will definitely try and track down the new PFM.

Personally: I would have had Hackett's higher, included Belew's, and made a few minor changes (esp since I've yet too hear two of those).

Congratulations to Tony R for the work put in to compile and to present the top 10, also well done to every collaborator that has offered his vote, his appreciation and so on...

I've listened (I say this for the 10th time) to incredibly little from 2006, I plan to redeem myself on that if anything remotely interesting appears in 2007, but I've got two of my favorites in the top 6-10: Milliontown and Veracious (the latter is quite a surprise for me to have made it above others).

I've heard six of the top 10. It's a good list, pretty accurate based on all the music I've heard that came out this year.

The only glaring omission I see is the lack of Mastodon's Blood Mountain, which was a great prog-metal release, and #4 on my own personal top 10 of all 2006 album releases, including prog and non-prog.

Prog Metal is not for me, I'm afraid.
And I haven't heard the latest PFM yet.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the other albums on your list are overshadowed by Deluge Grander's amazing debut, which I'm hoping to review soon.

Here's to Deluge Grander's future!

Bloody great!!! My personal fave makes #5!!! Thanks Prog Ampu isn't the #1

Kayo Dot is incredible, though sometimes almost unlistenable .4 stars after all.

Nice to see Frost here. Nothing special really, but Neo in Top10 is always a surprise

Still have no PFM,Agalloch and Hackett ,but going to have soon!!!

Note: I thought PRR would beat the #1. Anyway, the list is awesome!!!

Shame on me, still haven't listened to Kayo Dot. Apart from that, which I cannot comment on, totaly agree with the remaining top 5, even though Hackett might be a bit to high (i enjoyed his album, as always, but it did sound like a weaker TWTS). PRR would be my Nº1 choice (until I hear Kayo Dot, that is...)

What is prog rock ?

It is music that does progress. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential.

Good job presenting the results, Tony! Clap Glad to see Kayo Dot win there, I noticed them a bit earlier than some people on the website, hence the interview. Funny to read a sentence outside of the context of my review written ages ago or so it seems, I laughed out loud for some reason.

I'll be sure to get my hands on the latest PFM and Steve Hackett, seeing the appreciation shown here (in fact, I liked both, but when it comes to 70's legends I feel more confident getting their 70's material and ignore the rest).

Looking forward to 2007 albums to come!

Claypool, Les     Of Whales and Woe
Levin, Tony     Resonator
Residents, The     Tweedles
Triggering Myth, A     Remedy of Abstraction, The

It's also not exactly easy to get a copy of the album ... but it's the same with the PFM album, so that can hardly be the reason.

Very good list. I would have liked to have seen Devin Townsend's Synchestra or Mastodon's Blood Mountain on there, but overall very good list.

Milliontown and Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue blew my mind this year, very glad to see those on the list.

I really need to pick up PFM's new album, I have all their classic albums (Storia, Per Un Amico, etc.) but I didn't think to give this one a try. The reviews really make it sound like a return to glory, I can't wait to hear it.

If The Crane Wife was on the archives, I know the results would be different
Not a bad list, except I would switch The Mars Volta and Tool (and then move them even higher up )

Good luck trying to get the Decemberists in, people doubt PRR credentials enough with the Indie sound.

Not that they belong in here anyway.

Not really. All personal preference and opinion, really. I much rather would take The Tain or The Crane Wife over Cautionary Tales of the Brave or The Dark Third.

Those albums came around a little later, and were not heard by very many people. I think Deluge Grander did finish 12th overall. We got them added, and hopefully more members will check out this fantastic album.

mmm...yeah, I guess it´s a good listConfused I dont know, I havent listen to the Kayo Dot album except for the one track in this site, but I did listen to their previews work...ok, if you think it should be number one, thats ok. But the rest of the choices let me a bit down, I thought The Mars Volta would made it in the top 5 again, and 10,000 days, although a good album, is no masterpiece and I couln´t disagree more when Tony sayd this album let nobody down, I remember reading how 10,000 days let so many downConfused. The Tangent in number 10...yes, why not, I didnt think they would make it, but I guess number 10 is the best position. Yet, Im pretty disapointed Beyond Twlight´s album wasnt there, for me the work of the year. Frost doesn´t deliver anything new, so why are they so high in the top 10, or even in the top 10 anyways?

It´s a shame, I really liked last years list...

I agree with that but this group for some reason are very popular especially by older prog fans (not me). I have seen this across the all the boards and the biggest moan was when the leader decided not to take this live and broke the group up.

I was surprised at their popularity but it was the same with Kino the year before. Confused

A couple albums of the year that seem unpopular but loved by me are http://shopping.theendrecords.com/s.nl/it.A/id.11223/.f?sc=10&category=2?partner=SCOTTMILLER - "The Acoustic Verses" by Green Carnation and http://shopping.theendrecords.com/s.nl/it.A/id.12759/.f?sc=10&category=13?partner=SCOTTMILLER - "For the Love of Art and the Making" by Beyond Twilight. Well based on the recommendation, I'm going to buy Kayo Dot, so it's all your fault if I don't like it......WinkLOL.....I don't know all of the rest but from that list I thought Tool's album was a little overrated, I thought TMV would have come No 1 (I do think its their best venture yet), and after raving over their EP, I found the PRR album to be a bit of a disappointment.

And as John McLaughlin's now on PA, I must mention "Industrial Zen" as a high point of the year. And from the BOF brigade, Rick Wakeman made a decent stab at recreating glories past with his aptly titled "Retro".

Roll on 2007!!

Well, the fact that it was number one in the Billboard charts rarely says anything about quality, even less about prog!
I know what you are trying to get across, that the album had an huge success and many where pleased as a whole. But I´m talking about this site, and I remember there where a lot of people really not happy with it. Opethguitarist just said it. I liked it, but it´s deffenitly not Top 5 album of the year material...at least for me.

How did Beyond Twilight´s end in the list? Cause there is one extremly good album which I feel should at least be in the top 10

Good list but not perfect. 'Paradox Hotel' should be in there & 'Wild Orchids' was probably the most overhyped CD from 2006 & didn't meet a lot of peoples expectations.

I thought Tool's 10,000 Days was fantastic.  It took a little while to get into it, then it got a lot better, especially the second half of the album.  I'm glad it finished 5th.

I agree that Green Carnation's "The Acoustic Verses" was underrated.  I just got it for Christmas, and I love it.  It's very pleasant to listen to.

And I just finished listening to the new Kayo Dot album for the first time, and I have to say... I don't get it.  I'll listen to it some more, but I don't know if it'll work for me.

I've wondered, as well, whether Kayo Dot should be listed under RIO/ Avant Prog.  They are a metal oriented Avant Prog band.  I like them a lot, and I am not usually attracted to metal bands -- it's the avant Prog boy in me, and my jazzy leanings, that likes them.  http://www.estradasphere.com/ - Estradasphere is another metal/ avant Prog band I like (listed at this site under Rio/ Avant Prog).  Of course there are a number who mix up metal with jazz etc. Ideally, this site would have multiple tags for bands to describe the music better (Kayo Dot, for instance, could be listed under more than one Prog subgenre -- several in fact.).

Much as I like symph prog, I tend to prefer metal influenced bands that are more in the Avant Prog Metal vein than those more in the Symhonic Prog Metal vein (or those bands which prominently mix Neo-Prog aesthetics with metal).

Anyway... I'm pleased to see Kayo Dot in the top ten (though I prefer their debut -- this one is more daring and more avant garde, I suppose.   It's too free-sounding for me -- isn't as tight as I would like).  However, from what I've heard, I like Zaar's album the most.  For a time my favourite was Kotebel's Omphalos, but it palled a bit as I feel the compositional structure seems a bit forced (I know the tricks and there's not quite enough variation for me -- especially considering the earlier albums).  And I'd like more of a spontaneous feel to it.  Nemo's is good too, but much of the vocals don't appeal much to me.

The PFM album is very good, but I still much prefer Storia, Per un Amico, and L'isola (loved the vocals in those too).  It's a "safe" album -- not groundbreaking in the progressive picture, I feel.  It's  a very good effort from a classic band (which happens to be one of my favourite classic Prog bands), but wouldn't make my top five list because for me it's still not the band's best work (my opinion might change over time).

I didn't care for Amputechture, or what I heard of the Frost* album, but I respect that they're highly regarded albums by many.  As for the pure Reason Revolution album... pretty good from what I've heard (even though it sounded more Prog-Related to me), but I don't know the band well enough.

I'd say it's a shame that Zaar didn't get more votes, but it's just a popularity poll amongst a select group of PA members of which most of us don't belong.  It's largely a matter of taste, but I know that I haven't heard enough 2006 alums to have an informed opinion.  I believe my would-be favourites are albums I haven't heard at all.

I do think the "contest" would work better if there was an initial shortlist, and then everyone who is eligible had to hear all of those before making a case for their votes (stream the albums for them if one could get permission from the bands, or labels, to do so).   It would be interesting if the thread where this was discussed could be copied/ pasted into here (publicly) since I'm more interested to hear why someone voted for an album over another (sure it's taste, but criteria are at play too) than to know just what was voted for).  But then that will get discussed here too, so whatever.  No need.  Were there official criteria that collabs/ reviewers were expected to follow when making their choices (beyond it must be Prog that they like)?  If this has been mentioned already, I apologise.

I expect there was some fiece battling between PA staff trying to convince others that their choices were better/ more adventurous/ more progressive/ showed more technical and compositional skill....

I'm disappointed that great albums such as Green Carnation's "Acoustic Verses" and The Flower King's last album don't even appear when a somewhat dull album like "Wild Orchids" is 3rd place and a good but derivative "A Place in a Quene" manages to be in the top 10 with that awful singer.

Opinions, opinions, opinions.

It won EASILY.

Not to my taste either, I voted for the more "traditional" albums but it was a Poll conducted among the site collaborators and was fair and above board.

PFM was my top album and I voted for Steve Hackett and Frost* too.

Just think how it will next year when I have to do the poll again and the new Rush album isnt album of the year, or Porcupine Tree...

or Marillion for that matter...

My man, it's going to take a lot more than a less-than-flattering sample of Kayo Dot to bring me down. The new Marillion is being mastered this week and should be out around my birthday, got a new Rush disc around the corner, new Dream Theater to accompany that, and then the new Neal Morse next month. I'm as happy as Rosie O'Donnell in a Hostess® outlet store!

Viima - Ajatuksia Maailman Laidalta

To name a few (there are more).

So my point is, there is so much more than the "known" and "usual" names. Just look a bit further and take Top-10 lists with a grain of salt and not so seriously. Anyway, top lists - I don't like them too much. I like to expand as much as possible.
Do the same.
Explore and enjoy.

Anyone interested in sources for samples and info, feel free to PM me.

Have a good prog year, everyone.
