It's the age-old question that everyone fears to answer...
The question that is more important than life or death (Thank you Bill Shankly)

What if you were stuck on a deserted island (with the necessary facilities to listen to cds Wink ), what would you choose as your 10-cd collection !

No cheating...  Only 10.
No compilation albums.  Only PA-listed bands.

Of course this list tends to differ as time goes by, but if I was asked to pick my collection NOW, the list would go like this (in no particular order) :
  1. QUEENSRYCHE's Operation: Mindcrime
  2. YES' Close To The Edge
  3. RIVERSIDE's Out Of Myself
  4. JETHRO TULL's War Child
  5. SIEGES EVEN's The Art Of Navigating By The Stars
  6. MARILLION's Misplaced Childhood
  7. ANGLAGARD's Hybris
  8. OPETH's Damnation
  9. OZRIC TENTACLES' Spirals In Hyperspace
  10. GY!BE's Lift Your Skinny Fists...
Alright, there it is...
Something heavy, something sweet
Something serious, something completely wacko Confused
something old, and something, well not too old.

So, what's your list ???

Well if I was stuck on an island with electricity and a sufficient stereo system, I'm pretty sure I would just hop on the A Train and ride back homeWink

But anyways, I could answer that. Maybe I'll think about it, but just ten??
Oh gosh!LOL

As my music collection grows bigger and bigger, making "desert island lists" becomes harder and harder. Right now I feel like bringing these albums (in no particular order):

Univers Zéro - Ceux du Dehors
Zamla Mammaz Manna - Familjesprickor
Aka Moon - Aka Moon
Yes - Fragile
Art Zoyd - Symphonie pour le Jour Où Brûleront les Cités
Gentle Giant - The Power and The Glory
Høst - Hardt Mot Hardt
Magma - Attahk
Taal - Mister Green
Dün - Eros

The list could look very different tomorrow.

Does the system play mp3? Because if it did I'd stuff as much songs to 10 cds as possible. If not, oh well,

Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Jethro Tull - Stand Up
Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
Peter Gabriel - Up
Rush - Moving Pictures
Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
Caravan - In the Land of Grey And Pink
Camel - Camel
Wigwam - Being

And the stereo system better be good! Though I reckon there's a ship a-coming, so I wouldn't have to be there for long, but still, I'd take these, enough variety, not to get bored in one artist only.

If restricted to PA listed bands only (and in my case, it is restrictive), the usual suspects would be brought in
Rush - Hemispheres
Gentle Giant - Interview
Led Zep IV
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Ange - Emile Jacotey
Harmonium - Harmonium
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
10cc - Original Soundtrack
XTC - Skylarking
MInd you, I'd try & find a way to circumvent the limit & smuggle some AC/DC, Motorhead, Johnny Cash, SPlit Enz, Nick Lowe, Trust ... basically a thousand & one albums, as I can't stand listening to the same music all the time.

Gaston,

Did you JUST edit your entries? I was just going to give you a big 'thumbs up' emoticon for Dave Matthews Band's Before These Crowded Streets!!! I know, I know, it's only stuff that is prog and prog related; but, I hear a lot of progressive tendencies in their music. Especially "Don't Drink The Water", "Spoon", and "The Dreaming Tree". Man, I need to break that disc out more often.

Yes, I completely agree! I can't really say that for all of their stuff, but BTCS is very progressive. So dark, brooding, and epic...it's probably my second favorite DMB disc behind Under The Table And Dreaming.

Dark Matter is so sick. I was considering it. Your list has a very positive feel to it, One, Snow, Live in America, Brave, Stardust are we, but Dark Matter of all of them seems to be the...er...darkest.

"The hand of God defends America!" Seems pretty positive at first glance, but is it antagonistically facetious?

It's my favourite bar none. UTTAD is up there, Crash is a tad better maybe imo.

I've often wondered if Dave should almost be prog related or something. Can't be bothered to press the issue though...

Gaston,

Aside from the first 3 entries, this list is very organic and could change in 10 minutes (if it hasn't already).

Actually, the three CD's by Marillion are pretty dark in and of themselves. Brave is a given because of it's subject matter and how there's a 'grit' about it; however, Afraid Of Sunlight is very melancholy and painful. In some ways, it could be even darker than Brave, in spite of it's airy and ethereal sound. And as for Marbles, there's a theme throughout the disc that has a dark mysticism about it. Hogarth has said that it wasn't intentional, but the songs on Marbles have a correlation that borders insanity or losing one's 'marbles'.

The rest, however, are a bit light in nature. Maybe with the exception of Moving Pictures.

I have a 4 song promo copy with an acoustic version of "Crash (Into Me)", which he does with Tim Reynolds that is stunning. I don't play Crash or Everyday as often, though. Maybe I should.

"The Best Of What's Around" and "Typical Situation" are two of my favorite DMB songs. And it's his first and since I've liked him since his beginnings, it holds a special place in my heart.

I think I'd like to have talking books:

Greg Lake reading "How To Find Food And Water On Any Deserted Island"

Geddy Lee reading "How To Build A Seaworthy Watercraft Out Of Stuff You Can Find On A Desert Island"

Peter Gabriel reading "How To Navigate By The Sun And Stars" (with star chart and foldout map showing current flow)

Jon Anderson reading "How To Use This CD As A Mirror To Signal Search Planes And Rescue Boats"

David Gilmore reading "How To Occupy Your Time And Keep Your Mind Active Whilst Waiting To Be Rescued"

Phil Collins "How To Sell Your Story To Hollywood And Make A Lot Of Money"

edit: Oops, I guess that last one isn't prog.

Yeah, very much so. When not constrained by the four walls of a studio, this band lets it fly even more. I just may have to venture on over and make a suggestion.

I still need to get the newest one, but Live At Folsom Field is my favorite.

Their new album is rather weak, but their newest live album, "Weekend On The Rocks" is very impressive, the new material sounds so much better in a live setting. Plus, they've recruited a keyboardist and a trumpet player, it makes their jamming a lot more interesting.

The newest one definitely isn't my favorite; but, I do like how they threw caution to the wind. They broke away from their usual recipe and tried something different.

I do need to pick up that new live one sometime, though.

GYBE - Lift Yr. Skinny Wrists
                    Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
                    Pink Floyd - The Wall

All the people gathering their favourite albums to take with them to a desert island should be sent to exile on that desert island and be locked there forever so that they can finally realise how bad all their favourite albums are, how sh*ty their life on the desert island is, how stupid they were to even imagine it, and how far the reality on the desert island is from their wildest dreams.

And to add insult to the injury, I would give each "desert islander", in addition to their pack, one copy of Kayo Dot Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongues

well said. and judging by some people's lists, they could use that eleventh album to take a break from the ten they chose that all basically sound the same.

                    Well, that's the challenge actually.
To get the most variety within your selection.  Some people will choose 2 or 3 albums from the same artist/band, but in the long run you would appreciate the diversity.
And what if you COULDN'T pick any live albums...!
Glad to see Harmonium getting a few votes Clap
