I'm just wondering what people might have stumbled on recently. When I started reading this site, I was sometimes a bit overwhelmed by the advertised prices on various sites for some of the lesser know, but still high quality offerings that were reviewed on this site. My own personal example was finding Sloche's debut LP J'un Oeil for $4 at Spin-It, my local second hand record shop, while a dealer in New Jersey (who has a link available from this site) was asking $25usd plus shipping. Mind you, after buying Conventum's debut, I was talking to the shop's owner & mentioned this info re : Sloche. Since then, more than 20 LPs from the 70s Quebec Prog scene have come in, & his prices have come up. I bought COnventum for $6, he's now got another copy selling for $12. And he has taken the extra step of labellling them as Quebec Prog, & also checking Ebay & similar sites in Europe to ensure he's getting "fair market " value. Still, his prices beat those I've found on selling sites, and allow me more leeway to explore those overlooked gems. So far - Et Cetera, Caramel Mou, Morse Code - Procreation, Breche - Carapace et Chair Tendre , Eclipse, Le Match - Legendes. Now if I can only get my record player going again to upload these beauties to computer & burn them onto CD. Once done, I'll sharing reviews with you all.

I'm always hoping to find Eros by Dun or some Magma but the most obscure I've gotten is PFM and Hatfield and the North.

A good used record store is priceless-- on CD I've found rare KC like 'Absent Lovers' and Night Watch', old Bo Hansson, U.K., Zappa, ELP's 'Live in Poland', Egg, and National Health.

If you list your city, I'm sure some of our members could help you out with addresses. In a lot of cases, your local "alternative" press may have ads or listings. But in some cases, it's word of mouth. A lot of these are run by music freaks as a labour of love, so the advertising budget is practically nil, outside of word of mouth. Good Luck & good hunting.

Here in Atlanta, the first hand record shops are bad at stocking good stuff. But, you can't beat a good second hand shop when it comes to browsing CD's and discovering new stuff sometimes. I've been fortunate to have decent used music stores in my area for quite some time. Some come and go, but some hang around.
Shopping on the internet usually involves having to know what you are looking for. Lately, it's been all internet mail order for me. More stuff out there I'm interested than time or money for
Without naming names, though I can, there's a really good internet source I've bought tons of stuff through, used, new, from individuals, from businesses...

Here in Quebec Canada (Montreal and Quebec) we got a lot of used stores. Some of them is now online or will be soon (they got e Web site, but no catalog). In Quebec City you got http://www.musiquedufaubourg.com/index.html - Musique du Faubourg were you can buy online.

In my case second hand record stores are like oasis of good music
because many prog artists had their albums released in LP and never had
been released in CD in Brazil. Unfortunately here in Brazil CDs are
expensive and imported ones are much more, so with luck one can buy 10
second hand records in good condition for the price of one new imported
CD. If it wasn't the second hand record shops, I wouldn't have almost
any prog album.
And surely I'm always finding good things in these shops (though some
are not cheap like the common prog albums like Yes, Genesis, PF, etc).

My most recent purchase in a second hand shop is a vinyl copy of Art
Zoyd's Musique pour l'Odyssée. I've also found a vinyl copy of Univers
Zéro's first album, which I haven't bought because of a lack of money.
I hope now one has bought it yet, because I will have money pretty soon.

So thanks to you Quebec Prog record prices will dramatically increase. How thoughtful of you, knowing that most of it has still to be released on CD.
Knowing that Le Match fetches around 100.00$ US.

Yes, I used that site (GEMM) to buy from different stores but Canadian post rates are a pure scandal. It litterally doubled the price of the vinyls.
But overall I'd say that a lot of Quebec prog still remains fairly cheap.

Most of my finds in general have come from second-hand record shops; unfortunately, my favorite shop closed down several months back, so I've been in a bit of a funk in that area. However, I did have some luck recently with a local shop which has been closed the last few times that I've been in there. Here they are:
King Crimson - In The Wake Of Poseidon (EG Collectors Edition release)
King Crimson - Islands (ditto)
Peter Hammill - pH7
Van Der Graaf Generator - H To He, Who Am The Only One (ABC/Dunhill release)
Hopefully, my luck will continue!

I hope that Mr Trane was being sarcastic ( in a fun way). Part of the point of the post was to mention that treasures abound in the unlikeliest places & often for much less than what collectors' sites insists they should go for (remember me buying Sloche for $4cad, compared to a PA linked selling site asking $25usd, plus shipping). When it comes to the so called "obscure" masterpieces, I'll take a chance & pay $5-10 for an LP or second hand CD. But a $100 for Le Match, whoa. Mind you, you should also take into account that when these LPs or CDs come into those shops, the owners may be more likely to purchase them, therefore allowing the rarities to be found out more readily ,,, P.S. Can you tell me how I go about getting that $100, Sean? That is, once I've uploaded & burn the album onto CD.

If you're a rabid collector with limited funds, you make choices. That & if you're buying an obscure group or album, if you buy a LP or second hand CD for a few dollars only to find out that it's overrated (in your opinion anyway), it less of a letdown budgetwise. Or to put it in a more positive way, I'm more likely to take a chance on something different or less known if it's cheap. I had thought of buying Sloche's debut online for the $25usd asked, but once bought & listened to, I'm glad I didn't. It's good, but not that good. So for $4cad, I'm glad I picked it up. And if you have a decent LP, plus a good recording software ( I use Nero), you can go a pretty good job of cleaning up the sound to your satisfaction.

Not knowing if you were being sarcastic or not , Sean, please keep in mind that not all music collectors can afford to put down $20-30cad on an album that may or may not live up to its' reviews on this site or others. I got started collecting Gentle Giant & Genesis albums at yard sales when CDs took over, then bought some Lps & CDs second hand & completed my collection by buying the rest brand new. To repeat my opinion, Sloche's debut is good, very good. But if I had paid $25usd plus shipping, or even the $20cad plus for it that Quebecprog may charge, I would have felt shortchanged. And as for the comment about Le Match being valued at $100, well, being strictly middle class in money means, NO album is worth $100. So, to end this (hopefully) not too dismissive missive, I'd would be very interested in your response as to how this budget challenged prog collector can get $100 for Le Match once I've uploaded & burnt onto a CD. Of course, if you're the one that wants it that bad, it would expedite matters ...

I was of course being sarcastic (I even admit at the bottom of my first post in this thread that prog from Quebec is still rather cheap).
I have seen this Le Match fteching around $90.00 in auction and over €80.00 in fairs. But I would never pay that kind of money either, even if I could allow myself to cede on such temptation once in a while. I have been trying to get a hand on Tea And Symphony's second album (called Jo Sago) for years now, but still refuse to dish out more than €50.00 (that's close to 80.00Cad), but copies go on Ebay for 300£ (that would make it close to 600.00 Cad).
As you are still fairly new here, you are probably not aware that I champion Quebec prog, and I heard most of these groups while I spent my youth in Toronto (partying in Montreal). So when I came back to the old world in the late 80's , unfortunately I left behind my vinyls, which have since disappeared for over a decade. Which means that the albums I ordered from a Montreal shop (Francophonies) though GEMM, I had heard of a good deal of them, making them a safe bet .
Give you the last example: Brèche, Maneige's last three, Connivence's debut and CANO's third and fourth and two more I forget right now, cost me 80.00 US (that's less than 10.00 per album), but shipping also cost me another 75US. And the shop was so uptight that they also cost me an importing tax at the Belgian customs of another 10.00€.
Needless to say, I shall not repeat this too often. But if you can find me a Le Match album at a reasonable price (as well as Michel Madore Komuso A Cordes)... please let me know
Tout en vous remerciant bien, Mr Robichaud (desliens avec la chanteuse?)

Actually, Sean, I picked it up for $12cad at Spin-It in Moncton NB ACADIE. Sorry for the misunderstanding, as I'm kind of new to the emoticon thing . I can relate to your younger days, as we're about the same age (I'm 1-2 yrs older , wiser ???). I think there was one big advantage to growing up in Canada back then - we got the best of all worlds music wise. We had exposure to british & europeen groups that Americans had hardly heard of (say Gentle Giant), we had our own vibrant canadian & quebecois scenes (Rush, Max Webster, Offenbach, Harmonium) & living next to the elephant, well, we knew the american music scene . As for getting the big bucks for Le Match, I have to admit to some trepidation about auction sites & the like. I have finally uploaded the LP onto my computer, so once I've had a chance to give a few listens, I'll make sure to send in a review.

MMMMh!!!!!!!!!...........
Canada in the 70's was probably the best place to be (but let's face it the vinyl imports were incredibly expensive and we couldn't get Grobschnitt, Magma or even Gong other than on imports) , but in 76 and the PQ crisis, being Francophone in Ontario was much less pleasing that before. And apart from Maneige's tour in 79 (from which came Composite) and Harmonium (from which came En Tournée) most Quebecois groups couldn't get a bloody gig in English Canada. Even Ontarian CANO never played in southern Ontario.
But I will be always thinking of Canada being responsible of what I am today.

You just have to keep going back. It also helps to find out when their buying day is. Try to get there before all of the good stuff is picked over.

As an added note, I thought I would mention that things are much better as far as the music scene goes. Many Quebec groups come through town regularly to the Universite de Moncton (sorry for the missing "accent grave et aigue, I haven't mastered that aspect of the keyboard yet), other local halls. While his music is nowhere near prog, Pat Groulx et les bas-blancs were at the Moncton High auditorium recently. Due to conflicting social engagements, I was unable to attend, but he sold out the 800 seat theater no problem. I've compared his album to my friends as a kind of Quebecois version of our own "1755". A little bit of rock, jazz, country, traditonal, but mostly music you'd have fun playing at a house party, or as is the habit here in the Maritimes, at a Kitchen party. Of all the things technology has brought about is the ability for musicians to put their music out there without the need for a major label contract, so even the small scenes are able to put out without the approval of some accountant .

Just sold my 14 (about) CD's to the 2nd hand shop and had to wait a bit for help. So I browsed. What a wasteland. Not a thing of interest. So after the sale, I asked the kid to check his computer for Porcupine Tree. "Is that the artist or the album name?" "Band name," I replied. "Oh, it looks like we have Deadwid." (sic) I was hoping for Lightbulb Sun on a one in a million shot, but no luck. And I would like to know the mutt who sold these guys a copy of Deadwing. Sacrilege! But got $21 for my crap. Woo Hoo

I am doing this because I found Dark Side of the Moon on vinyl (from 1973) for about £6

^Did it come with the 2 posters and stickers?
The 1973 pressing has a solid light blue triangle in the centre, a black inner bag and is sealed down one side of its Garrod and Lofthouse gatefold sleeve - if you found one of those, it's worth £200. If not, it's still a great find!
I picked up 5 Rush, 2 Gillan and 1 Utopia album, Uriah Heep's "Salisbury" (2nd press Bronze label, not Vertigo spiral, sadly), Thin Lizzy's "Live and Dangerous" double album, Yessongs (triple album), a second press each of Trespass and Nursery Cryme (Book value £65) and a copy of Fish's "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors" for £2 each yesterday.
I'm just a compulsive collector

I sold up my records a few months back. I had given up on it initially and sold up around 4 or 5 years ago (the record deck had stopped working), but I ended up doing it again around 3 years ago. However, I simply could not find much out of the ordinary like I used to- for example, I used to get some really nice, valuable stuff like The Graham Bond Organisation's second album 'There's A Bond Between Us' (easily the most valuable album I ever found, very good album so I got in on CD with 'The Sound Of '65'), 'Screaming Lord Sutch And The Savages' (pretty poor 'psychobilly', I think the term is, but very valuable), The Incredible String Band's debut (this was a repress but was still around £50 at the time), John Martyn's 'London Conversation' (a fairly polite trad folk debut but his rarest- a pink label Island copy too) George Harrison's 'Electronic Sounds' (rubbish, again, imho) and Creepy John Thomas' eponymous album (not bad, kind of in the vein of Edgar Broughton Band) plus I once found near complete back catalogues of people like Man, Gentle Giant, Greenslade, Genesis, Yes, ELP, Beefheart, Caravan, Curved Air etc- this was my musical education as I was around 14 or so then, and my dad was rediscovering these bands too. But the nearby boot sales REALLY dried up over the past 2 years, plus the record shops tend not to have too many bargains or even THAT many rarities. It got to the point where I had mostly reissues which have less lustre, imo, so I thought I may as well stick with the CDs. I don't really regret it.
I do still find some gems, CD-wise, though in record fairs and second hand record/CD stores. Recently I got Rick Wakeman's 'Time Machine' and 'Out There', BJH's 'Caught In The Light', Carmen's first 2 albums in an Angel Air promo, World Trade's eponymous debut, Manfred Mann's Earth Band's 'Nightingales And Bombers', the Wetton/Downes album. The best find I ever had was a pretty comprehensive selection of neo prog around Xmas which I'd been chasing for a while.

UNfortunately my fave shop has lately been dry on interesting finds. A bit disappointing considering I'd stumbled on 6-7 fine Quebec prog albums this past winter. There's still good stuff, like old blues & folk albums, but nothing I can justify spending my budget on.

Which bit did you mean?
The label, the inner, the sleeve or the inserts?
Those are all UK 1st press features - trust me.

I meant the inserts (posters and stickers) especially. If not, Ben might have picked up an copy which the previous owner of the LP has kept'em himself - or a later pressing. Dunno'.

^Nah - the US had different coloured posters - and I'm not sure about the label, as US pressings aren't particularly collectable, generally.
The UK had posters and stickers too - but as you say, most ended up on walls and college books. It adds to the resale value to collectors if you have them - that's all.
I don't know much about later pressings, as they're generally not collectable - apart from the Ultra High Quality and Quadrophonic issues - but the 1st and 2nd both had the inserts, FYI.

..we can still get an approximate date from the matrix codes that are etched into the dead wax in the run-out groove at the end of each side; Should read SHVL 804-(n).
On the first pressing, (n) is 2, for a reason I'm unaware of - probably a fault with the very first press.
-3 is still datable from 1973 - the first pressings sold out in record time, excuse the pun. The cover of -3 is by G&L, and the vinyl is still decent quality - so if you have one of these, it'll sound nearly as good as a first press - don't sell it!
Up to about -5 is still early 1970s - this record sold in enormous quantities at the time - and ever since.
-9 or -10 and beyond are obviously late 1970s-early 1980s, and you'll note that the vinyl is flexi-thin.
Easier than carbon-dating!

I went to Princeton a couple of weeks ago in hopes of finding a few things on a list I had, and I end up finding nothing. That was pretty annoying....
