I promise that this will be my last poll for a looooooooong time! Just wanted to see what the spread is on this topic.

Oh sh*t!! I forgot to put down the Dream Theater keyboard guy. Sorry! Even though I hate DT, their keyboard player should have been on this poll.

Clive Nolan. his involvement with progressive music the last 15 years is great.

He playes in two of the best neo-progressive rock bands, Pendragon and Arena, also with Karl Groom on various projects, Shadowland, Casino, Strangers on a Train. with Oliver Wakeman. and as a guestmuscisian on Ayreons project(s) and some more.

arguably the most important keyboard player of the last 15 years.

I realize Mr. Lee is not really a keyboard player; probably not even a pseudo-keyboard player, but he did some little ditties on the ebonies and ivories now-and-then. I like Rush, though, so leave me alone. Stop picking on me!

I quite like Ronnie Brown of Pallas actually. Maybe the band isn't always on top form but Ronnie seems to come up with the goods more often than not. A sort of halfway house between Keith Emerson and Tony Banks, he's a quiet Scot with a big sound. More power to you Ronnie!

3 pages and no mention of Hugh Banton (Van Der Graaf Generator). Banton is the man! He may not have been as showy as Wakeman and the like, but he had a distinct style, and he was a master tinkerer, building or re-building his keyboards to suit the needs of the band's material. Hail Sir Banton!

I voted for Patrick Moraz as he is the only one that
can easily play anything that anyone else on the list
can play. Whether you like what he does as an artist
or not the man is a remarkable talent and his
interests span the whole musical spectrum. Keith
Emerson and Rick Wright being the next most
talented and I cant say which one I would give the
nod to. Emerson being a tremendous soloist and
Wright being light years ahead of the game with his
sonic paintings. He does deserve credit in the big
picture.

While Wakeman has been more prolific, Emerson at
his prime was the guy to beat.

IMHO, Wakeman's solos always seemed too "fiddly",
very technical but cold. Emerson (again, in his
prime) had more soul to his technique. Whereas
Wakeman's style was quasi-classical (he could do
runs up and down the keyboard at blazing speeds),
Emerson could do just about anything...blues, jazz,
honky-tonk, swing, plus great rock & roll technique.

Having said this, I'm also a great Tony Banks fan.
He is certainly a very innovative composer and
player. Jurgen Fritz, John Lord, George Duke, Chick
Corea stand up pretty well too IMHO.

Sadly, I lost alot of respect for Moraz when he started
slummin' for the Moody Blues.

Keith Emerson - Quel hottie! Also rather enjoyable to listen to. As is Mr Banks. As is Mr Wakeman. O, I know, it's mainstream (for prog..) but with reason.

But personally, I am above all this keyboardist favouritism. Let us just be grateful for all of the keyboardists who grace the earth, and the joy they bring.

Amen!

I went with Wakeman but its more because I like the music he plays than the best out there. Emerson turned me off to many times and I prefer Wakeman's piano playing to Keith. Kerry Minnear is a good chioce too. If we are counting Chick Corea as prog I would take him over all them.

So many top people were left out of this poll I'm wondering if it were worth holding. Just as well you are not doing another poll for a 'looooooooooong time! :)

1. Tony Banks - The Mastermind behind the genius of Genesis

2. Jordan Rudess - You gotta love that technique and composing complexity

3. Rick Wakeman - Hes amazing, ain't he?

4. Keith Emerson - I am very fond of this guy because I would say that I am very influenced by him in my playing (I'm a keyboardist aswel). I guess the reason I like the others Ive mentioned so much is because their style is very different than mine... Keith Emerson's is more similar to mine, so it frustrates me to listen to his work, makes me realise how much I have left to improve....

There are many fine keyboardists, but my favourite remains Wakeman. A breadth of work from the likes of "Space Odditty", to arrnaigin Cat Stevens version of "Morning Has Broken" to the Strawbs, his excellent work with Yes, and some fine (early) solo stuff. He's still a great player - witness his lates, Retro - and arranger, if not always such a hot composer.
