I suspect people would leave in droves. Anyway - what do you propose giving the paid-up member? Simply allowing access won't cut it, they will want something for their subscription.

Well, I can't vote in this poll but I would say no. I say we introduce a tax on threads about Dream Theater.

and don't forget Rush as well... we'll have M@X in that big home in no time. Hell we could even have a per diem plan for our collabs to reimburse us for the albums we have to buy to keep up and catch up with everything in the world of prog LOL

I can't vote in this poll (dunno why?) but I think it's a bad idea, it would be creating a private members club that would only serve those that could afford it.
At the moment people need educationg in the art of buying V. illegal downloading and many state financial contsraints as a reason for taking music illegally..... if they can't afford the music, how are they expected to be able to afford to talk about it???

Although like Bob says, I am sure those than can afford something should consider voluntary contributions maybe???

I dare say that PA would shrink in no time and some other website would become the biggest in prog very quickly if this was introduced!!!!

Sorry Mike, I've already claimed the idea of the Dream Theater tax! Big%20smile

I like the idea of charging bands - I'm always open to bribes for a good review.

I think the voting problem is a bug which happens when a poll is moved to a different part of the forum.

I'm pretty sure this section doesn't support polls.

This section doesn't indeed support polls, as I discovered once when I moved a poll to here from somewhere else.

BTW, I think it's a very bad idea to make people pay to become members... We're not a porn site, after all!Wink Seriously, it would make membership shrink dramatically, and impair the quality of the contributions to the site.  On the other hand, I also think a tax on DT threads and polls wouldn't be such a bad idea....LOL

i'd prefer saving money to buy cds rather than paying to this site

i'm sure The T would lead a Jihad against those DT-tax thing

Seeing the suggestions as to "certain" discussions should be subjected to a charge, I would recommend a real money maker - $10 for anti - Phil Collins Polls or Threads, with entry allowed only to those who agree with them whole heartedly - no disagreeing parties Big%20smile

Mind you, that would take away half the fun I get from this site WinkTongueLOL

Don't we pay a high enough price for just being people who love progressive rock?  How I have suffered from even mentioning Porcupine Tree in proper society circles!

Perhaps Prog per se is not as much the problem as is Porcupine Tree. Wink

But I do feel your pain.  I avoid using the Prog-word when discussing the music I like -- I don't find it meets so much outright vocal derision as it does utter disinterest.  After a moment of embarrassed silence, people change the topic.  Cry

I've taken a few beatings over Gentle Giant.  Comments such as "I would acquire the taste; problem is that your taste sucks" or " Gentle Giant's Three Friends?  More like Rectal Giant's Three Turds" can be disparaging (not that anyone has ever said it specifically to me, but it's the kind of thing someone might say).  Fortunately my friends are far more cultured than I, and would not stoop so low.

I did get one person at another board to listen to some Gentle Giant mp3s hosted at this site, and all he said afterwards was "Wasn't Friendly Giant a kiddy TV show?"  That was the straw that broke the Camel's back -- and that's when I finally decided to register here.

Some people do treat Prog as if it were a four-letter word -- whereas I tend to treat more as a four letter abbreviation.

Back on topicish: I don't think people should pay, but perhaps they should be encouraged not to use adblock programs (I also use a scriptblocking program) as advertisements help to generate revenue for this site.  And clicking on links (say for buying music) helps pay for the site upkeep.

Wink Brilliant thinking; a thoughtful idea for this site to make money!  People should pay a penny for every thought they share at the site.  At least it might keep people like me from throwing in so many tangential ideas,  Watch the thoughts dry up. Ah, a progarchives largely devoid of opinions/ ideas/ reasoning/ creative expression, instead focusing on facts!   The horror.

get real, no ones going to do that, this site would die everyone would leave and create their own free website and the whole thing would start all over again. Why be in a website you have to pay when you can leave and join a free one.
The whole purpose of this site is to keep it free and democratic, so everyone has a voice, start demanding money and the democracy dies.
