Hello there my fellow music lovers and friends!

I have been wondering which you, the progarchivists, like more of these two electronic albums. Tangerine Dream, the prolific Berlin School band consisting of three sequencers/keyboardists from Germany, created these records in 1974 and 1975. Phaedra contains four tracks of utter spine-chilling journies, and Rubycon is more of a solid plot, in my mind, consisting of two long playing tracks.

I would love your vote here, as I really can't decide for myself which of the two appeals most to me. Phaedra consists of ultimate variations, but Rubycon feels like a dark and evil journey through some abyss and other worlds. I love them both.... can one be considered more beloved, if not better?

I can't vote, as there is no poll. But I will state that I prefer Rubycon. Perhaps because it was my first Tangs album, and I played it a hell of a lot.

Even stevens .................sorry, but you do need to throw in Ricochet also, the live album.

Phaedra is a perfect album. I love everything about Rubycon, but in the end Phaedra pleases me more.

I do not know myself which album I prefer between Phaedra and Rubycon, both are ambient matserpieces. Maybe Phaedra is more varied...

And Ricochet is the best live album of TD from the 70s', maybe the best live electronic performance of this period ! I recommend also Stratosfear and Encore

I don't know if there is a favorite one; it's part of a trilogy with RICOCHET.

Maybe PHAEDRAClap

Definitely Rubycon for me. I find it a more satisfying and pleasing listening experience (not to say that a good album need necessarily be 'pleasing'). Ruby is more consistent and evocative of distinct imagery (the beach or the ocean for example), whereas Phaedra tends to be cold and just generally dystopic (Again, not that 'cold and dystopic' are necessarily "bad" qualities!)

Phaedra is an amazing album, so adventurous and creative but you have to be up to electronic music because I know many progheads who nail this album for being boring Unhappy
My favorite Tangerine Dream era is 1974-1977 (Phaedra-Encore) and my favorite album is Encore, the 2-live LP on which Tangerine Dream delivers the best electronic prog ever released, more powerful and compelling than their studio work and more varied than Ricochet.

For some reason, I cannot listen to the music in and after "Stratosfear" as intensely as I can "Phaedra" and "Rubycon". They added guitars into the mix, and mouth organs.... this seems like murder to me. If Tangerine Dream hadn't made those two latter albums, though, "Stratosfear" would be top-notch for me.

Everything is so ridiculously relative. I think we should have all members of PA vote on albums instead of have a shadowy elite control what we consider "progressive". Look, Glenn Miller was progressive!; he wrote different music!

I have to say, at such extraordinary quality, vivant passion and spark of a analog mind these albums (along with almost everything in the 70s) comes as, for me it's close to impossible to vote my favorite. I listen to this whenever, however, in an unspoiled frant of a great mindset.

So, out of a misery vote, let me say Phaedra, for it's impact on the music and the great style of dissonance, of disaccordance...of fascinating wormwaves.
Nevertheless, Rubycon, with an impecable balance in its hollow, silent, deep voices and trembles, is (just as) spotless

In hazier daze, with the help of a mixer board, I used to play Phaedra and Rubycon at the SAME TIME. They blended beautifully, such a trip.
To this day, when I play either of them by themselves, it feels like something is missing.
Give it a try. Your world won't be the same again.

Rubycon by a long way. Phaedra doesn't even rank in my top 5 TD albums.

Rubicon and Phaedra are indissociable IMHO. Both come between the completely adventurous Pink Years (Atem and Zeit) and come before the more "symphonic years" (from Ricochet to Force Majeure and beyond)

Phaedra is definitively the album that must come first (it is chronologically anyway), but since it just starts to use sequencers (which provides a beat or rhythm to the music and this was completely absent in Zeit or Atem), but they are still very discreet.

In Rubycon, these sequencers are now the big novelty of the album, although they are not yet plastered all over the place as they would in later albums (not in Ricochet which is a very conventional instruments album). In this way, Rubycon is the easier album of the two, because it provides rhythms

I prefer Phaedra because it's the most cerebral and ethereal.

money well spent....

Phaedra for me ...  took all the my '7 listens' to fully get into (my first TD album and wasn't much into that kind of music at the time), after that though.. was hooked.

Phaedra and Rubycon are great records, at the same level that "Encore" or "Force Majeure", but for me, TDīs masterpiece is "Ricochet". But very few consider "Alpha Centauri" as a good record, very original despite being less "technological", and I would include it with their great works

I think Rubycon is better than Phaedra, less patchy and far more modern sounding. It's also got that abstract hue which TD would lose in later albums, and which I like much! By the way, TD masterstroke, IMO, will always be "Birth of Liquid Plejades" by the album Zeit...

I wouldn't say that beat or rhythm was missing from Atem - how did you miss those pounding drums? Wink

I prefer Rubycon to Phaedra, but not by much. Rubycon sounds warmer than Phaedra, which is eerier and more unsettling.
