In light of the recent  "changing of the guard" with sebtp passing ctte on the pa top albums, I ask:  Should it have?  Or is ctte the true champion.  As for my opinion, i believe both are 5 star albums, but that ctte has something that sebtp does not.  Comments please.

One of these polls springs up every time that happens...

To tell the truth, I don't think either belong anywhere near the prog top 50, especially not SEBTP (CTTE does come somewhat close).

But I won't vote because this thread is redundant (I'll admit it, I started my own once, way back when... but I've learned since then -- or maybe the two weeks in prison with mad axe murderers reformed me...)

I don't know how an album like SEBTP can carry 5 stars and compared to.CTTE

With songs like ''I know what i like'', ''more fool me'' or the disastrous ''battle of Epping..''
with the riidiculous part ''picnic... picnic'' , its 'half of the album that stinks.
The other half is great, but a half doesn't make 5 stars

This is not liking an album, it's pure idolatry or fanaticismShocked by Genesis fans.

Selling England by the Pound, no contest.

CTTE is brilliant as well, but not nearly as great as SEBTP.

This poll means no more than: 'Which of these two is your favourite band?' And here we go again! Some people cannot stand Jon Anderson's voice. Others will think Howe is a more imaginative guitarist than Hackett. Yet others will prefer Tony Banks' keyboard solos to Rick Wakeman's. There may even be some blessed souls who think "More fool me" tips the balance in favour of Genesis!

Well I REFUSE to vote. In my opinion both of these are gorgeous albums. I simply don't see the point of questionnaires like: "Who's greater - Bach or Handel?" I've got no problem loving both - and quite a few others besides!

I agree.

But Its not a genesis versus Yes Poll. Not for me anyway. I voted SEBTP, but Yes are my prefered band. If it had come up against Relayer I would have voted for that.

By which criteria?

Don't forget that SELLING ENGLAND contains AT LEAST 15 minutes more music than CTTE!

we woould get rid if these extra 15mns with  ''i know what i like'' ''more fool me'' and ''the battle''  ,would have been a great album

Close to the Edge BY FAR.
If Genesis was represented by Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme things would be a lot more difficult.

exactly.....  every song on Close to the Edge was a classic.  Still in rotation in concert set lists and in peoples players 35 years later.  If Suppers Ready had been fit into SEBTP in place of weaker material... this could have been a draw.

I happen to agree with you as I find these songs weak.  However, I feel that both of these albums could do with some serious editing.  Close to the Edge has too much "noodling' for me (the songs would have worked better had they been tighter)..

Ultimately, these albums are tied for me.  Both are good albums, but neither album would make my top fifty favourites -- despite loving individual songs off these albums..

When I was in high school, the school radio station came on each evening from 7 to 10. Dave Sattler, DJ, played And You And I one night. My musical life changed. Ever since that Thursday night, CTTE has been the standard bearer for prog. Hands down. Thanks Dave!

SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND.
surely CTTE is more difficult, but more boring too..... jon anderson voice´s sometimes creeping me out....
and the lyrics.. SEBTP by far, CTTE contains some weak poetry.....
For me, in conclution, SEBTP is more enjoyable than  CTTE

CTTE is far superior in every department.

Let's get a few things straight.

1. There is absolutely no "noodling" on CLOSE TO THE EDGE. It's a compact masterpiece. Every note counts.

2. Of course quality is more important than quantity. But many people (all those in voted in favour of the album!) seem to believe that SELLING contains more highlights than EDGE.

3. "I know what I like" is a delightful ditty, and "Epping Forest" may lack the epic quality of "Firth of Fifth" but it is a hugely entertaining mini-opera!

Voila, I have spoken.

I prefer CTTE, slightly.  However, I still reserve the right to listen to both albums whenever I want.

Selling England, all the way. Although, I think that Foxtrot should be #1, and would prefer SEBTP to CTTE.

SEBTP has too many flaws ie, More Fool Me, Gabriels vox, boring keyboard solo's & an attempt at a pop song.

Whereas CTTE is flawless from beginning to endClap

Close to the Edge is a 3.5 - 4 star album at best
Selling England by the Pound is almost a 5 star album

Since I arrived, these two albums have traded places like 10 times... and each one of those times we had a poll exactly like this one!LOL... But I'm not the one to reject the chance to say it again.... That's more likt it...CTTE is magnificent but a little cold for me... SEBTP, though not the best Genesis album, has the best Genesis song, Firth of Fifth, with the instrumental part of all instrumental parts...only for that, so long CTTE!!Big%20smile

SEBTP.  CTTE is not unpleasant, but it doesn't have anything very impressive, except for the keyboard solo on Siberian Khatru.  Yes probably consists of the better musicians, but there are only select few moments on Yes's albums that actually make me realize this.  For example, Bill Bruford is most likely better than Phil Collins, but I didn't know that from listening to CTTE, where he drums like he's reading music.

Indeed, CTTE is certainly not unpleasant, but it fails to particularly move or interest me.  SEBTP's uninteresting moments include an individual song, which makes this weakness stand out, but overall the album holds my interest far more than CTTE.  I find a good deal of CTTE rather boring, though it may be technically brilliant, and I definitely prefer the album that has many wonderful moments with a much smaller number of lows to that.

Close to the Edge, definitely! I'd have more trouble choosing between Foxtrot and Close to the Edge, but I've just never really liked Selling England by the Pound.
