Robert Wyatt, Elvis Costello, Sting and the Brodsky Quartet have teamed up with the magnificent (classically trained) soprano Barbara Bonney, and a few other female singers, for WELCOME TO THE VOICE, an opera composed by Steve Nieve (Costello's usual pianist) and Nieve's partner Muriel Teodori. Also participating is the guitarist Marc Ribot, best known for his work with Tom Waits.

(A project like this could be heaven or it could be hell! Who's going to write the first review?)

It could either be great like the Michael Mantler stuff that Wyatt participated in. Or. It could be absolute rubbish like Passengers.

I fear the latter.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

I have never heard Passengers, but I know Pavarotti was on it, and at least Barbara Bonney's way of singing is far less overblown than his.

Still, the omens are not good. If you check out the new project's website, the first thing you hear is a fairly conventional Sting ballad. Makes me wonder what the hell Wyatt is gonna be doing!

Also, I never cared for Costello's so-called classical projects. His collaboration with Anne Sofie von Otter (arguably the world's most intelligent mezzo) was unspeakably turgid (in spite of ONE very beautiful song, 'Like an angel passing through my room'). So, erm...

Er, Sting? That guy's been stinking, in a gentlemanly way, since about 1986. Maybe Wyatt can add a touch of class.

And Costello's just a poor man's Nick Lowe.
