I'd like to know what everybody's thoughts are about non-prog artists
doing their own version of prog songs such as: the scissorr sisters
doing pink floyd's comfortably numb, or the gym class heroes doing
their version of supertamp's breakfast in america (actually retitled
it).
As for me I like comfortably numb just fine as a disco song, however
I'm not to thrilled by R&B (which of course stands for
Rubbish&Bullsh*t), so I don't like the brakfast in america song
very much, also not a very creative version. But that's just my
opinion, tell me yours and feel free to throw in any and every other
non-prog cover of prog songs in the thread

Doves made a cover of the first half of King Crimson's Moonchild. I've heard that Current 93 made a cover of Comus' Diana
Those are the ones I remember at the moment.

I would like to actually see a non-prog band covering a "real" prog song. CN is a non-prog song by a prog rock band, so it's likely that many non-prog artists would cover Owner Of A Lonely Heart and still I wouldn't think they covered a prog song

I remember a cover of 21st Century Schizoid Man by a rock band called Argent. If I remember right, they left out the entire instrumental section.

In the early 1990 there was a dance-techno duo called Opus III (if I can remember properly - their most famous song was "It's a Fine Day" and they featured a baldheaded female singer) which recorded an interesting cover version of King Crimson's "I Talk to the Wind".
The Israeli singer Noah has recently recorded a beautiful cover version of "Eye in the sky", in which you can only hear her and her guitar.
As you quoted the Iron Maiden, you cannot forget their version of Jethro Tull's "Crossed eye Mary".
Recently the Italian public has been sent back to 1976 thanks to a cover version of Le Orme's "Canzone D'Amore" by the pop band Aeroplani Italiani.
The Scissor Sister's cover version of "Confortably Numb" invaded the airplay two or three years ago.
On the contrary, the late Jeff Buckley's version of Genesis's "Back in NY City" is a real jewel which deserves to be discovered.
Finally, there is a cover version of "Your Move", the first section of Yes's "I've seen all good people", by a female vocal combo. I think they're the Wilson Phillips, but I'm not sure. Have you got more precise information about this?

Korn did a cover of the whole Another Brick in the Wall. The curious thing is that it wasn't half bad!

Canadian band April Wine also did a cover of 21st Century Schizoid Man. Canadian prog-metal band Voi Vod has covered more obscure Floyd tunes such as the Nile Song and somewhat less obscure Astronimy Domine.

"21st Century Schizoid Man" was also covered by thrash metal band Forbidden (a really fine cover), as well as by Swedish death metallers Entombed and, of course, by Ozzy Osbourne (pretty lame attempt in his case, I'm afraid).

Korn's cover of Another Brick In The Wall is a very decent song. Disturbed's cover of Land Of Confusion is miles better than the original Type O Negative's cover of Day Tripper I like better than the original(Unlike the first two, I'm a fan of TON)

Iron Maiden has done an EXCELLENT cover of Jethro Tull's Cross-Eyed Mary. Iron Maiden is my favorite band anyway, but I really like their version of Cross-Eyed Mary. They have also done a pretty lame cover of Hocus Pocus. Musically it's good, but the "singing" sucks. And Ozzy Osbourne's Schizoid Man cover is probably the worst I've ever heard! They didn't even do the jazz-section, and the vocals sound so horrible.
Saxon's The Court of the Crimson King is a great cover, but you'll still miss the flute (in the part: "the purple piper plays his tune"). It's also a bit shorter than the original song.
And how about Voivod's Astronomy Domine? Great!

dam kd you just read my mind.!!!
I remember in the early 90's I think right? that they did a excellent vesion of Astronomy Domine. So because of that I aways wanted to check this band out so maybe 3 years a go I recenctly saw the video again and I went to find out to see if this band did a floyd tribute album and to check their out. maybe bacause I have never been since the early days of metal a big metal fan I found this band a terrible one. Their music too trashy and incoherence. Not my cup of tee and taste. however they succefully did a awesome version of Astronomy.

The Scissor Sisters cover of "Comfortably Numb" is horrible. Why you would take out the best part of the song (the actual music) and replace it with generic dance filler is beyond me.
Saxon's cover of "The Court of the Crimson King" is quite good, although it doesn't have the false ending!

Guitar maestro Gary Lucas has done a number of prog covers, Astronomy Domine, two very different arrangements of Zappa's King Kong (recorded as King Strong and Guerillas in The Midst), Kraftwerks Autobahn for live solo guitar and effects. Jeff Buckley has an intriguing version of Genesis's Back in NYC on My Girlfriend The Drunk. King Crimson seem to be the most heavily covered: by April Wine, Glueleg etc. etc. Paul Gilbert has done a few.

Wycliffe Jean did Wish You Were Here rather badly as I recall.
In The Woods... covers of Let There Be More Light (floyd) and Epitath (crimson) from Three Times Seven on a Pilgrimage are excellent.
Kittie krapped on Floyd's Run Like Hell (on Oracle)
Conversely, Fuzzbox's version of Bohemien Rapsody was quite fun
Pantera's cover of Black Sabath's Planet Caravan is a straight prog cover by Thrash Metal band of a prog song by a Heavy Rock (proto-Doom) band, most strange.
and VoiVod's version of Astronomy Domine is a bit special, even if they get the words wrong (how hard could it have been - there aren't that many!), but as has already pointed out VoiVod are prog anyway.
and on the flip side - Threshold's cover of Super Massive Blackhole.
