The 80's decade went on with Arena Rock, Pop, Metal and with some prog too. But this decade was definately ruled by this virtuoso guitarist, founder of a new genre of metal related music: neo-classic metal. I gotta say, I really dislike most of the metal sub-genres. But when I found this guy and listened to Black Star, Far Beyond The Sun, among others, I was very astonished. His first release is an insane mix of metal and classical-oriented music. I also have to say: I LOVE classical music. And when I say he was influenced by some classical music touch, I'm musically (guitar) speaking...... I'm referrin' to his style of playing guitar. Well, I want to know your opinions (overall from progheads) about this loved and hated guitarist. I just love his earlier discography, but later, he started to abuse with his speed and virtuosity. Some people call him 'cold' all the time, including his first works. I think one guy can play guitar as fast as the speed of light and still being emotional in his music. Don't you agree? And finally......... the Million Dollar Question: Could Mr. Yngwie be in ProgArchives dot com????  ------------- The best you can is good enough... |

Not really suitable for PA, but I have to give credit for his first album, it definitely had some progressiveness to it, and quite a revolutionary album for 1984. And Marching Out was weaker than RF but not as generic as the rest of his discography.
He also certainly puts some emotion in his playing from time to time, I recently re-listened to songs like Brothers (specially the version on the Japan Philarmonic DVD) and Crying and it's pure emotion, but alas then the rest of his shredding marathon is tiring at best. ------------- Jesus Gabriel |

Right on the money Dick! Inspiration was the best thing he came out with after Rising Force. Great and unique list of chose influences (Kansas, UK, Uli Jon Roth, Rush) and excellent musicians (Jeff Scott Soto, Joe Lynn Turner, Jens Johansson). And of course, Malmsteen's blistering playing...This one was really a pleasant surprise. Maybe he should come out with a second volume? Maybe he can cover Tull, Yes, ELP and Crimson in the next one! All in favor?
