Anybody listen to Steely Dan?
I think they're pretty great, especially on their first two albums.

I love the 'studio/session' era when only the best in the music business played on their albums and even then.... Fagen and Becker would put them through 20 takes to perfect every single damn song hahhahha.  Consider me a huge fan.  Got Aja as a kid by mistake from Columbia House when I forget to send the frickin card in and it was the selection of the month.  Loved it and have been a fan ever since. Still have that LP, scratched as hell as it is LOL

Huge Steely Dan fan. Favorite discs are Aja, The Royal Scam, and Gaucho. Katy Lied is good, too.

Classic Albums featuring Aja is extremely interesting. I highly recommend it.

Clap I've been introducing Raff to Steely Dan.  So far, a BIG thumbs up for The Royal
Scam Clap, not so thumbs up for Gaucho Angry, and she liked Katy Lied. Big%20smile Aja is next up...

I love the Dan. Can't Buy a Thrill and Aja are my favorites, but Pretzel Logic and and Katy Lied are awesome as well. I practically grew up listening to them, but it wasn't until a few years ago I took to listening to them on my own accord. I got to see them on tour last summer, which was pretty much awesome.

I think Gaucho gets a lot of criticism. It's actually been a while since I've listened to it, but this album was a transition to a more restrained sound. It's still one of my favorites (and Bernard Purdie's shuffle groove on "Babylon Sisters" is perfection), but I would take Royal Scam or Aja over it any day.

Steely Dan Prog-jazz-blues band

There have probably been others who've said this but I believe it is a huge oversight not to have Steely Dan listed the Prog Archives. Their music has all the qualities of great prog: Incredible musicianship, intelligent thought-provoking lyrics, creative arrangements, odd time signatures, music which has broken boundaries and set a bench mark for that type of music.
Come on PA folk. Give the band the credit they deserve. They are truly a PROGRESSIVE band.
They should be signed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steely Dan, Prog-related?
Posted: 18 April 2007 at 05:37
I wanted a general opinion on Steely Dan and progarchives. What are the chances of Steely Dan being submitted as a Prog-related band? I will admit that I am a HUGE fan, so I am extremely biased. But I do feel that Steely Dan shares a lot of the same qualities that are characterstic of progressive rock. I don't mean to bore anyone, but here are some reasons why I thought that SD could possibly make it onto PA. First off, they have NEVER written a love song. The topics of their songs are... http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=36977&KW=steely+dan&PID=2474591#2474591">View%20Post

Steely Dan at Nokia Theater
Posted: 13 July 2006 at 16:24
Having always loved their quirky style of jazz-tinged rock but never seeing them in person, I eagerly anticipated their show in the intimate and quality-sound environs of the Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas last night. I was not disappointed in the least. The four-piece horn section was top-notch and the other musicians were exemplary. Tight doesn't come close to describing how they worked as a band. Standouts were the excellent guitarist Jon Harrington, who handled the difficult-to-reproduce... http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=26072&KW=steely+dan&PID=2077617#2077617">View%20Post

Easily one of my favorite bands. The first time I heard the Dan on theCountdown to Ecstasy album, I thought it was ok, but not great. But I gave it some time, and soon enough I was digging out all my parents' otherDan albums: Katy Lied, Pretzel Logic, The Royal Scam, vynil pressings of Aja and Gaucho, and I went on to buy Can't Buy a Thrill for myself. I absolutely love this band. It takes serious genius to make complex jazz into million-selling pop. The music hooks you in, it's catchy... http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=14806&KW=steely+dan&PID=1755474#1755474">View%20Post

My CD collection is probably 90% prog music, but one of my favorite groups of all time are the jazz-pop masters Steely Dan.

They are perhaps the only group since the Beatles to so effortlessly buck convention from within convention. They were able to allow virtuosity and creativity in their songs which were consistently successful singles and top 10 albums. Plus, their lyrics are great. The Dans are fantastic.  I didn't think they fit in here but in light of some of the other "prog related" bands I've noticed listed here I'm beginning to think that they belong.  You'll get no argument from me!

I'm a huge fan. Aja, Gaucho, The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic and Countdown to Ecstasy are great releases. These are the ones I know best.

I agree with E - Dub, the making of 'Aja' DVD is essential for fans and Bernard's grooves are just A1.

Also, imho, the 'Two Against Nature ' DVD is one of the best recorded and tight live sounds you are ever going to hear with second to none musicianship as we have come to expect.

The 'Two Against Nature' songs are great and some of the older tunes reworked like 'Bad Sneakers', 'Pretzel Logic', 'Black Friday' and 'Gaucho' are fantastic. 'Green Onions' and 'Kid Charlemane' aren't half bad either.

Only criticism, John Herrington's lead guitar breaks are not prominent enough in the mix . Great drumming from Ricky Lawson for those rhythm section enthusiasts.

Seeing them in Brisbane, Australia on 16/9. As I have lamented on other threads, because I live in the tropics I only have to travel 1500 k to see them, but who's counting! ! !

^^^ LIVE IN AMERICA is great album too, as the first 'official' Steely Dan live album.

Agreed. I think it was Dennis Chambers on drums for that tour - they certainly use some great drummers. Keith Carlock is coming to Aus. with them . I am not so familiar with him. Does anyone know much about him? I know he's been on some more recent studio albums.

I was huge Steely Dan fan over 10 years ago when i got tired of 1990's grunge and metal movement. At the same time i discovered wonderful world of Tom Waits. For some reason only Tom Waits has remained in my repeated listens. Maybe it is time to put Steely Dan back. Their music is pure genious, perfect mix of jazz, funk, soul and modern rock.

A great band! My favourite album by them is Aja.

The 2 albums they made since reforming are not bad but don't match their 70's output IMO.

I think they're pretty great, especially on their first two albums.

Steely Dan has produced some of my favorite non-Prog music. I would say the title to Aja is a Prog song! I love the funk-rock that Steely Dan produces.

An incredibly inventive and unique band.  Saw them in concert last year and they were fantastic.  They never made a bad album.

I believe a NYC based drummer, better known in jazz rock circles for working/recording with Wayne Krantz - who himself has been a SD's touring guitarist . Check out Wayne Krantz's own website (www.waynekrantz.com) if you want to follow up on Carlock on record, e.g. the most excellent May 2007 releaseYour Basic Live 06,  and the earlier recordings:Your Basic Live, Greenwich Mean - these are all recorded live. Btw Krantz does his own direct selling of records to fans  and I've found  his signature on the custom's declaration forms that have been stuck to the packages sent with the  CDs!

Thanks Dick.

Looked him up on Drummerworld. His work with Wayne Krantz is featured and apart from working with perhaps lesser known jazz/fusion artists [ Richard Bona, Bernard Wright, Jimi Tunnell and many ors.] he has very varied experience. From the likes of Bette Midler, Paula Abdul and even Harry Belafonte to Sting, Grover Washington, Chris Botti and Will Lee. He was also in The Blues Brothers Band including the movie band. Obviously a versatile player.

From memory, he does most of the drumming on 'Morph the Cat' as well. Also on the 'Two Against Nature' album [not the DVD]. I hadn't realised that.

Thanks for encouraging me with your question, to load up my discman this morning with the double Krantz Your Basic Live released 2 years ago (and not to be confused with Your Basic Live '06 released May 07!!). Reminded yet again of Krantz's music requiring a drummer and bassist who can be excellent improvisors - perhaps Jeff Sipe come to mind as well here. Listen to the live albums with Hellborg and Lane (Jimmy Herring's Project Z as well?), and certainly the samples available at Abstractlogix for the forthcoming Machacek album.

Well, I've recently returned from Brisbane where I saw the Brisbane concert of their Heavy Rollers 2007 Tour and it was amazing.

As they are not in PA I guess I cannot include a review under the Live Performance Review topic, so I'll make some observations here for anyone who is interested.

First up, I really enjoy their Two Against Nature DVD which, because it was recorded around the release time of that album, not surprisingly featured a good deal of that recent material with only a smaller selection of their earlier work. However, when Donald described themselves as jazz/ rock survivors of the 70s, it gave an indication of what was to come.

The set list included arrangements of Do It Again, Bodhisattva and the all female vocal rendition of Dirty Work which was a nice way of featuring the great female backing vocalists.

Other songs not featured on the DVD were Haitian Divorce , Hey 19 , Time Out of Mind , Two Against Nature but here's the thing - in addition to Peg and Josie [ which are on the DVD], they also did Black Cow , Aja and Home At Last . That is, the majority of the amazing Aja album. These were absolute highlights imo. and gave the extraordinary band the opportunity to display it's none-too- shabby jazz credentials. A nice touch also was the band, minus Donald ,Walter and the girls, playing a Jazz instrumental overture and also an end piece after the encore.

[Other songs that are on the DVD and not mentioned above were Black Friday, Green Earings and Kid Charlemagne].

The band was sensational [get onto their web site Heavy Rollers Tour header to see the full complement]. The whole brass section was a delight with Walt Weiskopf on tenor leading the way, particularly during the challenging Aja solos with the drums. Jim Pugh just embraces the trombone with his incredibly smooth an soothing tones. John Herrington on guitar handled the Bodhisattva solos admirably and the definitve Kid Charlemagne solo extremely well [ described by Steve Kahn as his best solo recorded as I read some time ago]. Jeff Young on keys was allowed to infuse some Hammond sounds and solos which was a little different to the recordings.

However, the stand outs were 'Ready' Freddie Washington on bass and the extraordinary Keith Carlock on drums . What a rhythm section! ! Freddie was given free reign to funk up the bass sound more than on the recordings, displaying his great slapping tehnique and chops, particularly during Peg and the encore version of Kid Charlemagne - but it was used quite sparingly in the main. Their respective solo spots during the band intros. were absolute highlights.

I should also say that when I read that Ricky Lawson wasn't touring [ he was on the DVD], I wondered if I would be disappointed with the drumming . That Keith Carlock was featured so often in the spotlight of the well co-ordinated lighting plots, is a testament to the obvious respect the band has for him, particularly D and W. What a gun ! He made the challenging Aja soloing his own, so memorably handled by Steve Gadd on the album. He's solo in the extended version of Do It Again was just another of a number of featured drumming highlights.

Finally a word about Donald's voice. Unlike so many of his vintage, his voice has held up remarkably well . Never once did I find myself thinking that he's struggling to get the note . He and Walter were both very relaxed and not obviously 'anal' as their critics have often accused. They really enjoyed themselves and it came across to the audience that way .

An unforgettable musical experience for this true admirer.

[ P.S. And Dick, if you read this, I now know something about Keith Carlock. He's brilliant]

I would appreciate feedback from anyone interested or who has also been lucky enough to see them in concert this time.

I've been a Dan Fan for decades. Katy Lied is indeed a great album as are Aja,  The Royal Scam, and Countdown to Ecstasy. Saw them live back in 1993, and it was an unforgettable concert. Clap

Steely Dan definitely belongs on the sight, the quality of production and musicianship on their albums warrants it. There are already quite a few bands that are a lot less "progressive" then Steely Dan on this site, so why not?

you know... to be honest.....  they are, and if we judged SOLELY upon the music they would, they could be a textbook example of Crossover Prog....but like some other bands... they are too well known to be fairly judged on just their work alone.  They have several strikes against them.... they are american and not european... STRIKE 1...   they were active in the 70's and not generally associated with prog..or even with Art Rock.... STRIKE 2...   have several prominent fans and supporter here who don't want to push this for appearing to be fanboys..  STRIKE 3...

the music itself out-progs prog in many aspects... the lyrical artiness trumps some of the sophomoric or just plain nebulous matter of some other groups..  Want some virtuosos?   Steely Dan were the best band money could buy...

anyhow...   just do what I do..and enjoy the HELL out of the albums.. whether they are here or not.
