I still haven't heard their latest release, but as I loved their first two, I guess that's an auto-buy, no?
What do you make of this band and their string fronted sound?

"Although this instrumental fusion band has been around since 1992, they only released their first album eight years later and, my oh my, was it ever worth the wait! Imagine KING CRIMSON, UK, The MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA and early JEAN-LUC PONTY all rolled into one plus some discrete traditional Japanese references. Powered by the violin, KBB’s music is dynamic, playful, intense and complex, yet melodic and surprisingly accessible. The band includes an exceptional violinist named Akihisa Tsuboy who also plays cellolin and guitar in addition to composing most of the material. The other members are keyboard player Toshimitsu Takahashi, bassist-guitarist Dani and drummer Shirou Sugano. All four musicians are extremely proficient.
Their two albums, “Lost and Found” and “Four Corner’s Sky”, will treat you to some feisty, bombastic passages interspersed with quiet, classical-style piano. The dense use of keyboards may give the music a more symphonic feel than, say, MAHAVISHNU, but the various time signatures within each track, the solid rhythm section, the interesting dialogue between the violin and guitar and the strong compositional contents all provide a variety of aural experiences guaranteed to keep you on your toes. I am delighted about that live album, what a sensational work on violin and Hammond organ! On the new CD entitled Proof Of Concept again we can enjoy great and often exciting work on keyboards and violin by wizard Akihisa Tsuboy, especially his wah-wah drenched soli are spectacular, very similar to a distorted guitar sound. KBB their music shifts from dreamy and classical to compelling, propulsive and bombastic, loaded with spectacular violin soli, sensational synthesizer flights and great interplay between violin and Hammond organ. Remarkable tracks are Rice Planting Song (the atmosphere is close to the Roumanian folk due to the violin sound) and 40 Degrees featuring swirling Fender Rhodes electric piano and a powerful jazzy bass. KBB is not a band that delivers elaborate compositions but if you like exciting instrumental, jazzrock oriented music with violin – and kebyoard pyrotechnics, you will be delighted too! |
KBB is a Japanese formation, rooted in the late Nineties but this new album is only their third studio effort after their debut CD from 2002 and the CD Live 2004.

A bit less bombastic but notably richer regarding musical ideas and arrangements, "Four Corner's Sky" is my fave KBB album so far. I'm still to get acquainted with their 2007's effort... any download link around there?... he he he...

I'll probably buy Proof Of Concept in one of my next purchases, I am very intrigued and I love the music, so it is sort of an auto-buy for me.

My first exposure to KKB, after mention at the Fusenet website , arrived from Amazon yesterday, so only into my first hearing, through Four Corner's Sky. I remember those guys made a good impression on me back in 2004-2005 with their album "Four Corner Sky", I found it to be a very good album, and the first track "discontinous spiral" was very impressive at first sight. |
