Esquire, if they are known at all, are mostly known as a minor Yes off-shoot fronted by Chris Squire's ex-wife. But I beg to differ. Their 2 albums to date showcase a great and criminally underused vocal talent in Nikki Squire, while the latter album 'Coming Home', free from the commercial considerations presumably imposed on the radio-friendly debut set, is a movingly personal and exemplary collection of bona fide progressive rock songs. In particular, the title track and especially the sweeping 'Tron Thomi' - which may be familiar to Yes fans from various compilation CDs - reflect a purpose from singer/songwriters Nikki Squire and Nigel MacLaren to maintain a tradition of space/art/symphonic rock utterly lacking from most so-called 'neo-prog' bands. Of course, I respect the views of anyone who greets the above text with a shrug of the shoulders or outright animosity - apart from the bit about Nikki Squire's voice. She REALLY DOES have an amazing voice; in a different life she should be up there with La Bush and other unique artists. In my world she does. It's a nice world. |
