Scorsese is my favorite director after Kurosawa and Kubrick and I believe he is the greatest living director. I think at least 3 of his movies would make my desert island list. Also, I think he has a ear for music, and his use of rock and other pop music in his films is by far consistently the best non-score soundtracks. In regards to the poll, Mean Streets isn't his first film, but it's his first important work. I've also left off a few minor movies.

It's impossible to pick just one. The Departed was hands down the best movie of 06, and for the first time since Return of the King the Academy realized it too. Raging Bull is the most complete sports movie ever made (only Rocky comes close). GoodFellas is the best mob movie since The Godfather Part II. Mean Streets has defining performances from Keitel and DeNiro. After Hours is criminally neglected, as is New York, New York. The Last Waltz is one of the three best films made about music. Gangs of New York and The Aviator are superb, but people wanted more crime films from Marty, so they were snubbed. The Last Temptation of Christ is the only thing (film or otherwise) that triggered a reevaluation of my faith.

In the end, I have to go with the flawless Taxi Driver. It is by far Marty's most subtle film, and all the themes he was building with his early work (male insecurity, paranoia, gritty street life) combined in 2 hours of perfection.

He's directing the Rolling Stone's next doc. There truly is a God.

After Hours is my favourite. Raging Bull and Taxi Driver are also brilliant.

Personally I havent seen anything from him that I have truly liked, but at the same time there are many I havent seen.

I do think he is very gifted, he does have some parts that are just brilliant. The whole scenes where DeNiro and Pesci explain how Vegas works is amazing, and Good fellas, although I dont remeber it very well, had some interesting parts too. But for the most I normally find his films way too long for their own sake.

And then there are two films I dont like at all. First the Aviator... quite boring if you ask me, and Di Caprio´s performance irritates me and then there is the down right bad, in my view of course, Gangs of New York... and the Departed, although a good movie, is nothing new either, best movie of 06?... not at all (that was the Fountain Wink) and again DiCaprio! I just dont buy his though guy act... as well as Matt Damon, I dont care how many movies where you shoot everybody uo you do YOU ARE NOT AN ACTION ACTOR!!! ... Jack Nicholson on the other hand is perfect... as always

^The Bourne series didn't convince you that Matt Damon was the best thing to happen to James Bond since Sean Connery (he was quickly bested by Daniel Craig). Sure, Bourne isn't James, but watch Casino Royale and the Bourne trilogy and tell me they didn't completely overhaul the Bond series to adapt to those films. I thought DiCaprio did an excellent job in both The Aviator and The Departed. In the end, it all comes down to opinion, but you're wrong. WinkBig%20smile

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

"Mean Streets" has wonderful impulsivety and rawness in it. My vote. Other goodies: "Taxi Driver", "New York, New York", "Raging Bull", "The Last Temptation of Christ" & the episode from "New York Stories" (missed that one from the list! Tongue).

Actually, the one I wish I could go back and add is The King of Comedy. I can't find it anywhere and it's generally forgotten, but my friend said it's a classic that never got its due.

I'm traditionally not a fan of Scorsese, "The Last Temptation of Christ" soured my view of him (and that of Peter Gabriel as well), but I'm over that now and I chose "The Departed". <_<

OH man practically all of them!  Scorsese is a master of film.  The Departed was crap all around and am quite upset that he set out to do a remake of a pretty good Hong Kong film over a more original project, and that he was awarded the Oscar for doing so, but it happens I guess. Mean Streets is my most favorite though.

Goodfellas, followed very closely by Taxi Driver.

I also really like Raging Bull,The Departed and Casino,I am surprised no one voted for that movie yet.
