I must say, for a band with so many rating, there isn't a lot of discussion about them.

From Black metal, to electronic, jazzy, and now extremely mellow, this band knows no bounds, and a lot of fans of all kinds music can be turned on to this group.

So vote and recommend, I have Bergatt, Blake, and Shadows of the sun, all of which I am very pleased with.

I used to be a metalhead, and at that point I thought Bergtatt was the one and only relevant Ulver release. hee...

now I'm just keeping hold of Blake, Perdition City and Blood Inside. I thought Shadows of the Sun was a little minimal, creatively, and it didn't interest me all that much.

Ulver are probably one of the most creative bands I have ever heard. You can't pin them down to any one genre, they change and re-invent themselves from album to album, and I love that.

That being said,I prefer their earlier black metal albums and think Bergatt is one of the best ever in that genre.

Well, I just did a review of Bergtatt, not my favorite, but a great black metal album.

Right now my personal choice is the Blake album, though I'm definatley looking forward to getting perdition city.

Nattens Madrigal is hands down one of the greatest black metal albums out there, and my favourite album by Ulver. Of course, this album is very very far from progressive, so I'll say Lycantropen Themes as well.

Bergtatt. While I like the later electronic stuff, I prefer Coil for that kind of thing.

Haha, funny as it may seem, I am torn between two opposite outputs of Ulver's catalogue, namely the first and last you mentioned: it's either Bertgatt or Shadows On The Sun (since they're so different, can't I choose both? Big%20smile)

Themes from William Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell for me, but any will do depending on my current mood.

Bergtatt is a great black metal album, and the one I prefer from the four I have (Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, Perdition City and Blood Inside). I consider Ulver as one of most creative and groundbreaking metal group.
In deed is this still metal? No matter, it is simply good music!

To be honest, I haven't heard an Ulver album I haven't liked yet (though I've only heard Kveld, Shadows, Perdition, Marraige, and Blood)

The stuff amazes me, and I've been really getting into it

Blood Inside is probably my favorite right now, Garm's vocals on it are drop dead gorgeous

not taking away from their other stuff though!

I've only heard Bergatt, Perdition City and Shadows of the Sun. Perdition City is great, Shadows of the Sun is okay, and Bergatt is awful IMO.

Bergtatt is one of the best black metal albums ever. The folk touches were unique at the time and every track is excellent.

Ulver's more experimental material I love equally, but I often find their later albums inconsistent. Full of brilliant material, but also some let-downs. So I'll go with Bergtatt for innovation and consistency.

It's funny how an almost non progressive black metal album is second place only to whats considered a prog masterpiece.

Perdition City, Blood Inside, and Shadows Of The Sun are all near perfect and 5 star albums. Very much of which one I would call the best would be based on nothing more than my particular mood.

When I find myself giving out Ulver recommendations though I usually think to say Perdition City, so I'll vote that way.

1. Perdition City
2. Lycantropen Themes (unerrated...or maybe it's because I have a weakness for music with an ambient quality)
3. Blake
4. Bergtatt
5. Kveldsanger
6. Blood Inside
7. Shadows of the Sun

but those last four are all basically tied...Ulver = greatness. one of my favorite bands.

Well it's just so good.

I voted for Nattens Madrigal. That album is unbelievably raw, yet still melodic at the same time. Perdition City would be my next choice - in fact, I'm listening to it right now.

yikes. in honor of some ulver re-listening i did tons of last night...I have to re-order this:

1. Blood Inside (10/10)
2. Perdition City (9/10)
3. Shadows of the Sun (9/10)
4. Blake (8/10--the latter disc is a bit boring)
5. Kveldssanger (8/10)
6. Lycantropen Themes (8/10--still underrated and unmistakably awesome, but the last few tracks are sort of out-of-place and go on a bit too long)
7. Bergtatt (7.5/10--very good for black metal; however, being that I am not really one FOR black metal...this one's good, but not excellent like their others to me.)

Are there any I need to check out, based on my favorites?

I didn't read anyone talk about 'Svidd Neger'. It's not my favorite Ulver album, but it's so damn nice. Thought at least someone would vote for it.

Svidd just has some amazing orchestral arrangments. Kind of like the 'A Quick Fix of Melancholy' EP. I thought it was awesome.

I've never listened to the Svidd Neger soundtrack by itself, but I do enjoy the movie, it's hilarious! Tongue

um, ULVER has just tonight jumped about 50 spots on my fav. artists of all time. Shadows of the Sun just sank in and its my favorite of the 5 that i have (bergatt, nattens madrigals, blood inside, perdition city, shadows of the sun) perdition city is still amazing but shadows of the sun moves mountains. or floats them away.

The more I listen to it the more I think Blood inside is a masterpice of modern music... a review will come in time, but as every new listen is... well, NEW, I cant figure out just yet what it should get... 4 or 5 stars?

Perdition City Was a bit disapointing, but the few times the vocals come up, they're almost tear jerkingly awesome!

I want Nattens Madrigal sooooo bad!!!!!

Just spent a few hours listening and reading the lyrics to "Blood Inside" and must say I'm hooked.  Very creative and just love the second half of this album..

Bergtatt is pretty much the pinnacle of folk/black, which is why I voted for it. I never really got into Nattern's Madrigal, there's something not honest about recording something deliberately raw after having clear production before hand. I love my raw BM, but the album seems to miss the point of being a raw album, and just seems fake. it's not really all that raw, the sound is still quite strong and powerful in some ways, it's just got horrible scratchy guitars for no reason.

Kveldssanger could be great, but it's probably not inventive enough in it's songs, and could have done with some of more Garms brilliant vocals. Blakes is good, I like the variation in it, but probably runs a little long (*cough* 20 minutes of silence for no reason *cough*) but it's an interesting album. I really like the new album, kind of like a half-ambient/half acoustic thing. Still prefer the black metal, but as far as that type of thing goes, it's pretty damn good.

Well, Nattens Madrigal was ridiculusly black metal....

And I just got Blood inside, but I need morer time to make a good opinion.
