Subject: European Prog Festivals: Rolling Calendar
Date Posted: February 03 2008 at 12:07

Welcome to a new initiative I am very proud to introduce to the Events forum! I have collated a rolling calendar, including all the basic details of many of Europe’s premier, annual Prog festivals, together with a weblink to their respective homepages, and Myspace pages.

It is my intention that this list will be continually added to and updated as an ongoing process, in order that it might become a reliable and comprehensive ‘one-stop’ source of information on all Prog festivals throughout Europe during the year.

In order for this to succeed of course, it goes without saying that I will need the help of you all. Firstly, despite the wonderful aid of the Worldwide Web, I am sure you will understand that I have a greater knowledge of the Prog scene here in the UK than I do about the scene around the foothills of Transylvania. I would therefore request that if I have missed out the details of a great festival near to you, that you add a post to this thread.

Secondly, many of the initial festivals listed are for more mainstream Prog, as opposed to RIO/ Avant Garde/ Kraut/ Canterbury and so on. Whilst I apologise for this omission, I would also be grateful if fans could post relevant details, below, to enable me to construct a more comprehensive festival guide.

Finally, once this concept has been established, it is my intention over the following weeks to create festival quick-link guides for other regions of the world, until ultimately we have all bases covered!!

Many thanks to you all, and Best Wishes

Jared....Big%20smile

* Update *

Notice of Suspension of Calendar Updates

I have decided to stop the regular updates of these Calendars for the time being.  You can still find out the latest dates, line-ups and festival details by clicking on the links provided, within the post below this one.  It is hoped that in due course, Prog festivals information will be transferred to the front page, where it should receive greater exposure and become more of an asset.

In the meantime, if you feel you would like to take on the role of updating this calendar every couple of weeks, then please either PM myself or one of the Admin Team, to this end.  I thank you for the support and interest you have shown over the past 12 months.

Jared

Are you a Festival Organiser?

Help Us To Help You!

You could help us by providing our members with brief, regular updates on festival details, bands booked etc, by starting a thread, and adding to it, as news comes in. Naturally, the more often your thread is added to, the higher the festival’s profile will become as it is bumped up the page.

After the event, we would love you to either post a review with some pictures or provide a Weblink, which in turn may attract more attendees next year!

You can gain some additional exposure by becoming PA's MySpace friend!

http://www.myspace.com/progarchives - www.myspace.com/progarchives

and we'll be happy to add your event!

ProgArchives is a keen supporter of Prog Festivals, Worldwide!

I'm on the lookout for festivals in Italy, but I am afraid it is too early to know. I am not even sure there is anything of the sort in my country... I'll keep you posted, though I wouldn't hold my breath about it.

just wonder if the Les Tritonales programme you´ve posted might be from last year. (don´t want to miss it twice) - do you (or anyone) know wether this is an yearly event?

anyway you making this list, made my day!

Jared, I'd be carful about listing the Gigbeth festivel on here, I think Pendragon were the only prog band to play there last year, out of over 100 acts, most of which were rap or indie. It caters to local acts in the area and I think Black Sabbeth is as prog as it gets in Birmingham.

this is a very good question... I have been checking their website and Myspace regularly for updates, but nothing seams to have materialised.  I believe this is an annual event, so am a bit perplexed...if you do find something out about a 2008 event, please let us know...I'll also do my own homework...Wink

yes, another very good point...Clap

I admit I included it, on the basis that a couple of our members did attend last year, and Pendragon played... I will keep an eye out for bands playing later in the year, and take a rain check...in the meantime, does anyone else have a view on this??Embarrassed

About Gigbeth, the part that Pendragon played at was the "accoustic legends" gig run by http://www.stillgigging.com - www.stillgigging.com The guy that runs it (Neil Fishwick) is a great bloke, I don't know if he plans to repeat the excercise this year, but it's worth getting in touch with him, he has several prog or prog related bands on it's listing.

One more band added to the Subtacto-lineup: SYLVAN. And there are now only 1 or 4 bands more to be added. One band on friday and three on sunday, but sunday is not confirmed yet, as the venue probably are occupied with another arrangement that day, so for now it's 50-50 if we're going through with the third day or not.

For the Spacerockers amongst us. I'm going. Note, if you will, the ex-Hawkwind themed headliners! All bands are at the Space Rock end of the Prog spectrum, but hey, that never 'urt no one!

edit: Oh yeah, talking of Hawkwind (that nearly rhymes), there's also the Hawkfest, the weekend later. 25th, 26th, 27th,28th July. I'm going to that too!

I came back from Burg Herzberg at half past midnight:great fun because there were good vibes all over the
place but the schedule was eventually disappointing with Grobschnitt below average and a psych/kraut free Guru Guru(Kawabata Makoto's kraut power never escaped from his mind),moreover there were two awful reggae bands.I would have prefered a psych/prog/fusion/zeuhl/kraut event but people were nice(I met so many interesting persons) and I saw great concerts:QOPH(smoking!!!!),Anthurus d'Archer(so weird and so good!),Hypnos 69(great!),Sebka Chott(good crazy music!),Motorpsycho(heavy side of life!),Siena Root(rock'n roll!) and Litmus(fun to see this Hawkwind styled band!).Moreover musicians were really friendly:I didn't regret such a long way(1500 kilometers from my hometown).

Yes, I have to admit, I was quite surprised at that one as well...but I can't help thinking that their line up is considerably heavier on the 'Prog' than on the 'Power' this year.  Is that a reflection on Dutch tastes??

anyway, all updates have been carried out now, with all festivals having completed their line-ups for 2008.

yes... with the greatest respect, 3 bands during an evening constitutes a 'gig' rather than a 'festival' to be honest... I had predetermined that for inclusion, the minimum would have to be 4 bands over an afternoon and evening... otherwise, the doors would be open for me having to list every prog gig known to man...and I'll be here 'til doomsday....Unhappy

could you start its own thread, Rach??  many thanks....Hug

I came back from the Crescendo Festival last sunday:wow! The line up was varied and terrific and I saw
great concerts, here is my top 4:1 Turzi,2 Flor de Loto,3 Wicked Minds,4 Hypnos 69.I would like to praise
Turzi for they were outstanding. When they started playing, the big spaceship took off and the spectator was
ready to experience the ultimate trip to the cosmos.St Palais didn't exist anymore and minds were blown
away by powerful motorik drumming and sounds from outer space thanks to Tim Blake the cosmic messenger. Moreover one could feel like being part of the Music, having visions of the Silver Surfer, seeing
Jack Kirby's drawings.Anxiety was here too with the utterly dark vibrations reminding us of Ergun the drifter,
a spacebound soldier from Didier Comés'wonderful comic books. When the audience thought landing was
soon, climax was actually coming to the fore with this impression of reaching a cold city overloaded of Morricone influenced psychedelic noise and a second after being destroyed by extreme space kraut!Still
haunting 4 days later!A trilogy is being released by Turzi:A,B,C.The first one A was out in June 2007,B will be in stores in january 2009 and C(too early to know).Distributed by Record Makers, highly recommended
to Can and Ennio Morricone fans!

Another suggestion for any psychfreak:from November 28th 2008 to 30th November 2008 in CAPC
(Contemporary Art Museum)in Bordeaux,France there will a special exhibition dedicated to the psychedelic
movement from 1968 till the 80's.It will deal with great acts such as Ame Son,Gong,Cheval Fou,Barricades and so on alongside with a psychedelic rock festival with bands such as Turzi,Expo 70,Lichens,Ruralfaun Collective,Principles of Geometry,Psychic Ills........By the way,Tim Blake will guest with Turzi. It will be huge!

Progrésiste's over:Cry.I came back tuesday morning, less money on my bank account but good remembrance! It was great talking with other proggers.Balloon(NL)did good stuff with his psych/space rock à la Porcupine Tree/Pink Floyd and they rocked!Periferia Del Mondo:nice jazz rock fusion from Italy, solid musicianship,a nice moment.Moon Safari from Sweden play and sing well but it's too soft for my taste.Aries from Italy did a nice showcase.Gazpacho from Norway was rather dull.Sunday:Cecilia Eyes from Belgium has potential but it is not my cup of tea.Conqueror with his superb symphonic prog+hints of space rock reached the top:best concert of the festival for me.On the contrary Pure Reason Revolution was appalling,no soul, bad singer, heavy sound with no power!Great moment but I think the organisation should introduce at least one weird band. The line up was better last year but the event still is worth a try!

I've just come back from the psychedelic exhibition in Bordeaux:quite good but some mistakes and I had too much high expectations. But it was low priced and there  were good moments such as Expo 70,pure kosmische!Steve Gunn acoustic psych/folk with a strong Popol Vuh vibe and Tim Buckley influences or Endless Boogie, electric and heavy space rock good stuff. The climax was Ame Son's concert:wow!Too short(more or less 30 minutes)but the minutes were of the highest quality with this great psych folk .The flutist was really good,Marc Blanc did very fine stuff on drums, the guitarist was good too.Great remembrance since it was a really special event for me.A true time travel!

I hate reading down these types of thread because it just makes me Jealous Jealous Jealous. You guys over the pond don`t know how lucky you are. Great shows are a thing of the distant past where I live in Montréal. The political climate seems to be the biggest culprit unfortunately. The thing that saddens me Cry is that these bands from the seventies aren`t getting any younger and neither am I for that matter. I`m seriously thinking of trying to get over to the UK or Europe to see Amon Duul II next year once the dates are finalised.

Ok good folks...I have updated the European Rolling Calendar to the best of my ability, although the word 'skeleton' springs to mind, when looking at the listings....Unhappy

During 2008, I was aware of at least 5/6 prog festivals which were cancelled owing to poor ticket sales, and I think that the economic downturn might have something to do with the lack of plans and information for some of the festivals in the first part of 2009.

that said, I will update as and when I am able, but I would be grateful if you could help me by supplying info in this thread, and thereby supporting the festivals as much as possible, during what could be a very difficult year for live music...Ermm

very best regards to you all...

For the calendar Wink

Progrock 2009 - the first edition of the festival
Metal Mind Productions is proud to announce the first edition of the progressive rock festival - Progrock 2009.

Katowice slowly becomes the most important mark on the map of the current progressive rock scene in Poland. The fantastic stage at the Wyspianski Theatre has witnessed live shows of many important bands like Pendragon, Credo, Final Conflict, SBB, Satellite, Arena, Landmarq, Galahad, Caamora… The shows at the theatre are acquireing a cult status among the fans of progressive rock, but also among the Artists themselves - the Wyspianski Theatre turned out to be not only a convenient place for such shows but also a very atmospheric, magical place. There will be another chance to prove it in February 2009 during the two day’s Festival – Progrock 2009.
