This is one of the more intriguing genres I think. A mixture of jazz and metal. My first exposure to this was Ephel Duath's A Painter's Palette. It easily became one of my favorite albums. It should rank in the top 10 of most innovative metal albums ever. I recently discovered Atheist which was also supposed to have a strong jazz metal influence. However, aside from a few bassline solos and an acoustic guitar part (you know, the parts where the band isn't playing metal), I can't hear any jazz stylings at all. The major turn off for me though is that most of the time they sound like Exodus (80s thrash metal band btw). Also, the guitar solos are completely uninspired. (on a side note, are there any other albums by ephel duath worth listening to?) |

I recommend all of the Ephel Duath albums. I was going to start a blog on this 'jazz-metal' genre a while ago...but schoolwork and socializing is holding me back from getting it done. Eventually..... |

Atheist is not as great as everybody claims, in my opinion. Cynic's 'Focus' is a landmark album that is amazing in everyway. Death's 'Human' is another jazz metal giant, but I honestly just like 'Symbolic' and 'The Sound of Perserverance' much better. Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects has an album that has some similar zaney riffs and sax lines as 'The Painters'. Panzerballet's debut also is in a similar vein to both of them, it is an intense jazz album, but with some metal elements instead of vice-versa, very interesting. There, that wasn't so hard. Maybe my real reason is procrastination. |

Cynic and Death are both related to Atheist right? There were band members from there that joined to atheist or something?
This Panzerballet sounds very interesting indeed. How are his other albums?
Yeah, my main problem is procrastination too, atm I should be writing a paper and its 12:36am.
oh btw, what is in your opinion, the second best ephel duath album?

I have to agree with ProgBagel, that Atheist is not as good as it's been hyped up to be, but certainly still a good band though. And yeah, the guitar solos have that uninspiring feel to them. Personally I prefer Death, jazz influenced or not, it just seems to be the better listening experience and I'm a little embarrassed to say, I don't really know much Cynic songs at all to cast a judgement on them. -------------

Cynic and Death are related...the 'Human' album by Death features a guitarist and drummer from Cynic. Panzerballet has just one album, the second is coming out next month I believe. |

The Ephel Duath question is a strange one...it is more of a matter of preference. 'Pain...' is more of a continuation of 'Painters', so I would just go with that one. Rephormula is also a very very decent album, though I just don't find the band as tight on the latter two releases. By the way, 'Rephormula' and the debut are the same thing...'Rephormula' just has extra material and is polished up better. |

Panzerballett's second album was issued in German speaking countries last Friday , it also is available for MP3 downloads from Amazon.com (somebody in the US tells me he downloaded the whole album for $8), the promo received from Act Records' London promoters indicates to me rest of the world release is imminent. One of the best metal fusion albums I've heard, with a nod to math rock and my review (alas with a few typos still intact) at:
