I have just heard an advance copy of Portishead's new album,Third.A clever 'title' as it is their fourth album.It's their first studio album in 10 years.It is superb! Gone is the trip-hop of yore.This album is much,much darker.It does have some proggy leanings with some searing guitars and 60s/70s sounding keyboards.One track reminds me ,musically,of Black Sabbath's 'Behind the Wall of Sleep!' Beth Gibbons has brought some of her Rustin' Man,(included ex members of Talk Talk), sounds to the table and all the better for it. One of the albums of the year so far.It will surprise a lot of people. The new album,Third, is due for release sometime in April -------------  Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb. |

| You may be surprised, but I've always wanted to check out Portishead (and unfortunately I never have)... What I read about them sort of intrigued me, but I never acted upon it. Therefore, I'll very gladly look for this new album, and then tell you what my impressions are. |

Thanks for the info. I used to really get into the trip-hop thing back in the mid-90s, its nice to hear how things are progressing. It's also nice to hear they are using old analogue kybds. Hi Raff, It's almost completely different in sound and atmosphere from their earlier albums.Only Beth Gibbon's vocals remain consistant with those recordings.Saying that,she doesn't sound as 'Billie Holliday'-ish as she used to. "Out of Season" was amazing, especially "Funny Time of Year" (top 10 track at my LastFM charts!  ). I like the first two CDs and looking forward to this one!

Bumping this thread now that this is my #2 CD of 2008 (and #1 if we only count albums officially released so far). Also, I prefer this to Dummy, which is the only other Portishead I've heard. |

This is an amazing album. I'm listening to it right now for the 4th time and it still blows my mind. It shows that prog is still an influence on some of the most innovative music around today. This is the true prog rock of today, not neo-prog bs. -------------

The new album is good, Ok but nothing really outwordly....i've got it for one months....starts not to get too many spins on my system..........doesn't compare to the dark athmospheric second album ....this one was trippy!!!!
