Got my tickets! OH GOD, YES!!! HILLAGE!!!!!! First time in the UK since 1975.
OK, I saw them at the Uncon in the Dam, 18 months ago, when not only Hillage and Giraudy, but also Tim Blake and Bloombido Bad de Grass peopled the stage, but there's still no way I was ever going to miss this one.
It's the Forum on Sunday for me. The QE Hall is a sit down gig, and there's no way I'm going to be sat down when "Oily Way" kicks off.
I'm off to book a ferry and hotel for the night. Can anyone from the Smoke advise me on safe parking? I hate driving in London since (deposed despot) King Ken f**ked it up in his personal war with mr Clarkeson.
(p.s. Sean, and all who have bought/will buy tickets: Which show are you attending, Saturday or Sunday? I believe Sat is sold out, but that's seated gigs for ya. It'd be great to see you there.) ------------- Perception is truth, ergo opinion is fact. |

Normally Chris and I are going on the Saturday gig, but if you want to meet up , I'll be the whole WE in London. Bringing the girlfriend so she can do her shopping (she'd tear myeyes out if I headed to london alone)

Outside the deceased drummers, only one man was lacking: Bloomdodo Bad De Grass, replaced by Travis and to a lesser extent Tim Blake (replaced by Miquette), Hillage & Giraudy getting double cheers from the crowd Two solid hours and a fantastic double encore.,during which the video behind them became awesome presenting and fooling with the artworks> From Aymeric Leroy (CALYX); I've just come back from Gong's gig at the Forum in London, and apart from Theo Travis, Mike Howlett was the sole member of the band who didn't sing once in the whole show... Even drummer Chris Taylor did a fair bit of singing (even taking over Tim Blake's lead in "Oily Way")... Excellent show btw, with Hillage taking some brilliant solos, & even playing "Light In The Sky" when Daevid wasn't looking... Apart from that, "classic" setlist but with the rarely played "Sold To The Highest Buddha" and a new song (co-written by Hillage/Allen), very much in the classic mode & including direct references to the lyrics of "Oily Way" ("now she's here, now she's gone, now she's back where she belongs" etc.). ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Which is pretty much how I remember it; a nice helping of Camembert/Trilogy numbers with a dollop of Hillage and a new song as the cherry on the icing. I'll probably post a fuller review in the next few days, but this was a magnificent show with Daevid Allen singing, dancing and playing guitar with a level of energy that would be remarkable in a man half his age (72 now?). Very theatrical, lots of costume changes and cosmic silliness, all underpinned by the remarkable Chris Taylor, a superb drummer who is truly fit to occupy the stool of the sadly missed sticksmen who were there before him.

Firstly, sorry I missed you guys, what with me being at the Kentish town gig.
Secondly: EVENT OF THE YEAR!!!!!!
Worth the 1200km round trip drive, and the nightmare of driving in that London. (hate that town!)
Any worries I may have had that Theo Travis would not be up to standing in for Bloombido (the greatest reed-man in all progdomn.) were soon dispelled. Chris Taylor, I knew, was up to the job, as he had been at the Uncon.
I'll rave about the performance later.
Support act, Slackbaba, was dull and tedious. In my ignorance I had anticipated a System 7/Eat Static type of set, but ooooh no.Just some bloke playing his record collection from what I could see.Only three people were actually inspired to dance (ok, I was one of them
 , but only for about 5 mins, to get the "blood" circulating  ).A word of advice to anyone planning on asking a cockney for directions; Always ensure he is alone and out of ear's range of another cockney. Failure to follow this rule may result in a fight as to who knows the best route, and who's been livin raand ere the longest. The amount of "best" routes to choose from will be exactly the same number as the amount of cockneys embroiled in the dispute, and much shouting and swearing will ensue. As you drive away, thanking them for their invaluable help, you will hear their heated debate continue, perhaps well into the next day.
