Yes, I know, the pattern...Whistler disappears, Whistler returns with a new band to tout, Whistler makes a few random posts, rinse, repeat as necessary, etc.
However, High Tide is in no way going to topple any works of Anderson, Morrison, Meloy and...uh...Other any time soon. Mr. Tony Hill is, however, a pretty damn good guitarist, and I like this Sea Shanties thing very much.
Oh, and, added gloat factor! To all those who complained when I said the Sabs weren't very original: "Well, who else was that heavy in '69?" I answer: No one. High Tide was, however, heavier.
God, I swear, House's violin in "Futilist's Lament" and "Death Warmed Over" (my personal fave) is sometimes so bleeding heavy that I can't tell it's a violin. Not to mention that the rhythm section ain't bad at all, and Hill's Jim-Morrison-meets-Roger-Waters vocals are real keen (the lyrics...perhaps not so much, but, two outta three ain't bad).

Friede and I are big fans of High Tide; the first 3 albums are great, although the 3rd ("Precious Cargo") is totally different from the other 2. not heavy at all, but very psychedelic. oh, and it was I who had them added to the archives  -------------  A shot of me as High Priestess of Gaia during our fall festival. I've only heard the first two albums, but I like High Tide muchly too -- one of my favourite bands in the Heavy Prog category.

Count me in as a fellow fan of "Death Warmed Up"... One of the very best instrumentals ever!  The duel between violin and guitar is to die for (pun intended ).

Yeah, I've since listened to the track that's listed on their page here, and, it's pretty sweet. I'll have to get more into these lads. the complexity and contradiction within High Tide brings out the heaviest music of 1969 for sure
but even after that the improvisations and crunching sounds doesnt stop, they are not only the first really really heavy progressive band but occasionally i can look at them as the first heavy metal band as well.
if u compare the fist album with sabbaths first; overall Sea Shanties is heavier for sure... althouh Black Sabbath is a very heavy song but the rest of the album is ordinary hard rock
and lyrically, its not songs that they sing, its poems really... and great ones as well... ------------- The Knife and The Wound |

I was just listening to the Moody Blues album, to our children's children's children, and the intro song Higher and Higher could have been a High Tide song.

I rarely read lyrics or try or find out what its really about., and I haven't done that with High Tide either. But all their lyrics have a very attractive gloomy, melancholic feel to them, especially Saneonymous. I get goosebumps just by thinking about that track. This is one band I know I got to thank one or both the baldies for checking out. I think one of the first posts I read here was one about Jean or Friede being disappointed for not getting any feedback on a High Tide thread. Absolutely worth checking out, Zargus, especially their first two albums. The third ("Precious Cargo") is also very good, but TOTALLY different. It was recorded 1970 but not released until 1984 or 1985.

I have Sea Shanties (actually I won the self-titled on eBay but got sent Sea Shanties instead, but it's apparently better so I was happy) and it's good stuff to rock out to. The version I have has some great bonus tracks too, which are almost as nice as the album songs. -------------

Hello about the HT albums the 1969 effort was one of the most amazing and heavy stuff that was released.
"Death Warmed Up", was one of the most heaviest track that any progressive band done.
The interaction beetween the violin and the guitar is orgiastic!!! so fast that the first time that i hear it i couln't believe it.
Their heavyness was terrific, i can only compare them in this terms with the second album of Rovescio della medaglia Io Come Io, without the violin, but this album was released in 1972.
Great albums the first two!!!
