I picked this up from another forum:

largest web database?

I have been searching for the largest web database on bands and
recordings and have found the following the largest:

     www.gemm.com
     www.gnosis2000.net
     www.gepr.net
     www.docrock.de
     www.musicstack.com
     www.popsike.com
     www.allmusic.com
     www.cddb.com
     www.ubl.com
     www.rockdetector.com

    www.proggnosis.com
     www.lasercd.com

Are there any others that are larger or more complete ?

There are always cases where a group or recording is in one database
but not in any other.  One of the hardest to find is "Luna Cinese" on
Cramps record label  "costin mireanu" .   Thanks for any
suggestions...........

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------

another very large one is http://www.freedb.org - www.freedb.org .   It
is similar to cddb.com in design however some content is different.

There is http://www.iuma.com - www.iuma.com   and another you might try
is Second Spin.  http://www.secondspin.com - www.secondspin.com   and,
of course, ebay.

in the prog arena exclusively  there are Proglands.com and ProgArchives.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
 I forgot to add:

   http://www.cdbaby.com - www.cdbaby.com
   http://www.cdstreet.com - www.cdstreet.com

They are mostly indie sites. cdbaby has 70,00 0 recording there are
probably 50 that are really great but how can you explore them all ?
Anyways I think http://www.gemm.com - www.gemm.com is king. That site
has almost everything there is. Gemm also show you how the internet
should really be used!
---------------------------------------------------------- --------------

Thanks for the gemm.com reference. I usually go to allmusic.com so I
will check gemm out.

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------

http://rateyourmusic.com/ - Rate Your Music

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Thaks for the rateyourmusic! Didn't know this one existed. Still think
that gemm has everything ;)  You can test the limits of a database by
seeing if it has all of the following:

 artist - title

---          ---

 momo yang - attimo magnifico

 costin mieranu -luna cinese

 mariadele

 camilla

 carlotta

 cincinnato

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------

Found another site :

  http://www.punkbands.com - www.punkbands.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Found another site still :

www.heavy-metalinks.com

There are alot of sites that lists bands, this has many really unknown ones!
There is some really good stuff amongst metal and punk rockers. granted
most is crappy but you can find something good every now and then. Must
explore them all...

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------

I just found some other large music DB on the web:

www.everycdonearth.com

www.songsearch.com

these 2 seem the same or related (?)

I also discovered that there are loads of music "blogs"  where indie
bands post their mp3s and indie sites with their mp3s. I will try to
search through them and see if there is  something good.

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Two more sites:

    www.drownedinsound.com

    www.garageband.com

In many cases some bands in one DB are not present in another, and in
some cases some bands have exactly the same names but are different;
they aren't aware of each other. I guess out of 1000 bands maybe only
one has anything original but you can never know without hearing them
all.......

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Found two sites where any band or person can post their mp3s. And others
can hear them all free. This means that you don't even need to burn a CD
to have your piece heard anywhere in the world! That is amazing .......

www.recordingproject.com (follow the listen forum ...)

    www.purevolume.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Another site is:

 www.soundclick.com

Most free mp3 sites have alot of  one man bands and alot of empty links
with just  junk written, but there are also alot of free mp3s and bands.

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------

Another commercial site is www.cduniverse.com. I didn't think they would
have a larger or different selection from say www.everycdonearth.com,
but they did.

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Some other medium to large mp3 uploading sites:

 www.acidplanet.com
 www.ampcast.com
 www.dmusic.com
 www.artistlaunch.com
 www.vitaminic.com

www.iuma.com (not sure about this site)

acidplanet is quite large, soundclick declares having a 150,000 bands.

I got this list  browsing soundclick.

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
One more interesting site:

  www.jambuddy.net

for those of you looking for another instrument player......

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Another two sites:

   http://www.mbus.com

   http://independentartistscompany.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Found two very good sites information wise. They have alot of
interesting information for those who like the experimental:

http://www.paristransatlantic.com/magazine/main/home.html

http://www.forcedexposure.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
I just wanted to add some other sites:

An encyclopedia of electronic music can be found  here:

http://www.eem.hotbox.ru
----------------------------------------------------------

Another large alternative music catalog:

http://www.fusetronsound.com/index.php
----------------------------------------------------------

Another online vendor (this is also connected to gemm)

www.cdconnection.com
----------------------------------------------------------

Another large alternative music catalog (maybe too much punk, indie rock) :

http://www.babysue.com/contents.html

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Some other list of obscure experimental oddballs
(probably some really good stuff in it though!):

  http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ultimathule/collection.html

  http://baark.org/lapinlistnoise.html

There is a mythical "nurse with wound" list containing some
obscure recordings hmmmmm.

  http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ultimathule/nww/nwwlist.html

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------

There is a set of great experimental music guides made as
electronic books "borderline" vernon joynson (fuzz acid
and flowers; tapestry of delight;  dreams, fantasies and
nightmares; cosmic dreams at play; and maybe other books
hmmmm).
I don't know what the status of these online books are
because sometimes they are not available and they change
websites often.

  http://groups.msn.com/PsychedelicPunk/links.msnw

  http://www.soybomb.com/BorderlineBooks/us6070s

  http://www.soybomb.com/BorderlineBooks/uk6070s/

  http://www.soybomb.com/BorderlineBooks/dreams/dreams.html

  http://tmachine.chat.ru/germ/progrtop.htm

  http://www.psychedelic-music.com/psychedelic2.html

-------------------------------------------------
Another good music buying site:

  http://www.netsoundsmusic.com
-------------------------------------------------

Another good site:

   www.waysidemusic.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Two more sites:

I thought this seller was connected to gemm but it isn't.
As you can see things are always complicated...

        http://www.aquariusrecords.org

A complex list of punk rock bands, interesting because of
the amount of research this guy has done (there are also
references to other archives...)!

        http://www.collectorscum.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Another punk site:

  http://www.punkpal.com - www.punkpal.com

This site has referefences to a group foetus that seems to have done
electronic music also. Things are kind of all mixed up in these
databases....

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Foetus has done some electronic stuff over the years (are they even
around anymore?), but nothing I can recommend and there's the rub.

A lot of Internet sites are available but few offer *real* information.
Really, the internet can be a resourse for junk and misinformation
beyond what has been seen before.

With this in mind- I don't visit many prog or AOR sites and stopped
subscribing to such magazines on the same subjects several years ago. (i
think the last time I read Exposure or Progression was 3-4 years ago and
I think these were promo copies?)

Less really is best.

www.starcastlemusic.com

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
I agree, there is way too much out of date and FAKE information on the
web. But there are also alot of unknown bands and combinations. I didn't
think PUNK and ELECTRONIC music would combine, but then I guess all
kinds of combinations are out there. Also beware that many small unknown
bands have some really great music. Just listen to "Time of Change" of
the Trip (1973).

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
Progression is a great magazine - i have been a subscriber since 2000.
I was a subscriber to Sea of Tranquiltiy until they stoped printing.  I
have not tried Expose.

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
A good site with "good" information may also be www.mp3.com.

---------------------------------------------------------- --------------
