Hi everyone!

You may find this title weird but let me explain you ;) I'm searching for some new prog rock at the moment. I'm looking for progressive rock that make you feel you are surrounded by mountains or forests, by Nature. Do you know what I mean? I feel this sometimes with Mike Oldfield (Hergest Ridge) or Jethro Tull (Songs From The Woods) or even with Yes. But now I'm thinking of it, there's not a lot of examples that come to my mind...

Your ideas would be highly appreciated ;) I prefer old progressive rock but everything is welcome :)

Oh yes, Bo Hanson "Lord Of The Rings" is a good example too Embarrassed

Not sure if it would do it for you, but have you tried some old Camel?

Oh yes, I love them! But it's more spacey, aquatic to my ears :)

(in the metal scene, Agalloch is a good example of what I'm looking for too)

"Epsilon in Malaysian Pale" by Edgar Froese makes you feel you are in the jungle. But be careful: Don't buy the new remixed version of it; it is horrible. Froese completely ruined a great album. Stick to the original.

Oh yes, well done! I already heard this one I think. I need it! What do you mean by ruining it? Bad remaster?

No, he added lots of sequencer rhythms that totally ruin the atmosphere.

Maybe i'm just wierd, but sometimes i do get the feel of a forest while listening to "Master of Reality" by Black Sabbath.
Maybe it's because of the poster that comes with it?

Not weird at all. I look for, and find this in a lot of prog. I don't know if people agree with my associations:

East of Eden: Mercator Projected
Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes: No. 2
Henry Cow: Unrest
Ange: Au Delà du Délire
Family: Music in a Doll's House
Flamen Dialis: Symptome Dei
Archaïa: St
Embryo: Opal
Anglagård: Hybris
Gnidrolog: In Spite of Harry's Toe Nail
Tangerine Dream: Alpha Centauri
Guapo: Five Suns
Tangle Edge: Tarka
Il Balletto di Bronzo: YS (I know its about a city under the sea, but I still see dark forests and dramatic mountans)
Peter Frohmader: Musik Aus Dem Schattenreich (an extremely dark and scary forest, that is)

Both of ../artist.asp?id=1015 - Algarnas Tradgård 's (Garden of Elks) albums. Musically I  prefer Delayed, but they are both reccomended.

Some proggy folk's got to be mentioned:

Comus: First Utterance
Woven Hand: Consider the Birds,
Faun Fables: Mother Twilight
Nya Ljudbolaget: St
Ragnarok (from Sweden) St
Continuum - St

I could mention more, but got to stop somewhere.

Hey, thank you so much for all these suggestions!!

I think I'll love Bo Hansson!

I'm preparing an Amazon order, if you have any other ideas Tongue

I quite like Mostly Autumn but there's somthing I don't like in this band... Maybe the rythm section, the drums, I don't know...

Rocktopus, I don't know most of your suggestions, it's great! I see if I can find them :)

Thank you

You said Songs From the Wood, so I'd recommend the Decemberists' The Crane Wife. Like all their work, it might have a sorta sea-worthy feel at times, but the title track (all three parts) are very woodsy, very wintery. The Decemberists' The Tain is also pretty natural sounding, lotsa English countryside there (about the same feel as Tull's Thick as a Brick, especially the first half of the first side (for me)).

Well, that's all my Decemberists collection...hey! You said Songs, but did you mean Heavy Horses? Possibly my favorite Tull album, and much more mature in its folksy feel.

Whoah! Someone mentioned Family! Cool beans.

You mentioned Songs from the Wood.  You might like The Puddle Jumpers, sort of Tull meets americana.  There's little or no flute but the rustic feel is there with mandos and folkish themes.

Caravan - In the land of Grey and Pink, it's whimsical folksy and I envision central England landscapes with that music.

other is Rush's - A Farewell to Kings, only the final Cygnus is spacy, the rest pretty much fits the bill IMO

Mastodon - Blood Mountain. Part of a series of albums inspired by the 4* classical elements...this one is Earth.

*Update: 5, if Mastodon is going by the historical Greek elements. My mistake.

-------------

Skwisgaar Skwigelf: taller than a tree.

Toki Wartooth: not a bumblebee.

Well, I think "Colony of Birchmen" is essentially about being attacked by giant tree people...or something. Very natural.

I've never heard it but "circle in the forest" by Asturias has a picture of a forest on the cover. Also, "tales from the inflatable forest" by the owl watches also has a picture of a forest on the cover.  Caravan's second album " if I could do it all over again I'd do it all over you" has a picture of the band in the woods. I haven't actually head the album though.

Now for some obvious ones(at least to me):

Ozric Tentacles- arborescense (this one has a drawing of a forest on the cover). Probably other OT stuff would be good for outdoor listening. They had a very earthy vibe.  Jurassic Shift and Strangeitude would be two others I would recommend. I haven't heard much else by them but apparently they started to all sound the same after a while anyway. ;)

Yes-close to the edge(the stream sound in the beginning should be a tip off)
"     - relayer (a great album to listen to in the woods or while camping or hiking)

King Crimson- lark's tongues in aspic (kind of spooky and scarey in parts so listen to in the dark with caution).

Genesis- selling england by the pound(for the battle of epping forest if nothing else)

Feld-, Wald- und Wiesenprog? Wink

You might want to check out Waterclime: http://www.myspace.com/waterclime - http://www.myspace.com/waterclime , which oddly enough is not in the archives. It's the prog rock project of Vintersorg, a metal guy who has done a lot of stuff on this very subject. I'm not actually that familiar with the Waterclime project but I think it should fit the bill. There's even a song called "Mountains" on the myspace. :)

I'd been thinking there should be a lot to recommend, but I haven't been able to think of anything else besides the very obvious ones. Metal, on the other hand, is full of this kind of stuff; one notable album I can think of that you might or might not like is Empyrium's "Weiland"; it's their final album and they were a "former" metal band at the time, the album is largely acoustic and even has mellotron (as well as bassoon and a classical chamber music-type singer), but it's still very "dark" in atmosphere. An acquired taste I guess, still not sure whether I like it myself, but it certainly has the "nature" vibe.

In a similar vein, Ulver's "Kveldssanger" is a rather popular acoustic effort from an at-the-time black metal band, but personally I don't find it to be very strong on the songwriting side. But again, it does have that nature vibe. I'd certainly recommend the Empyrium over it though.

Edit: and The 3rd And The Mortal, particularly the first two releases. Very different from the aforementioned albums, but very good!

As for actual prog... Tom Newman's Faerie Symphony would probably fit the bill. Mike Oldfield guests on it. I'll have to think some more though... I know there must be more! :)

I get this nature feeling with Gathering's Nighttime Birds, I love this album, if you are into this kind of music, you will love it

in addition, I am not sure if you will like DEAD CAN DANCE, the 90's albums might do it for you
(Into the labyrinth is my favourite)

A big bump for this thread :)

I really like Dead Can Dance!

Well, I'ms still searching for albums inspiring me forests, mountains. Actually, I find that the best example is Epsilon In Malaysian Pale" by Edgar Froese. It's just perfect!!

Bo Hansson is great too!

If you wanna go more extreme, Negura Bunget.  One of the most impressive contemporary bands in any genre.

Might not be be your bag, but if you like Agalloch you might enjoy Wolves in the Throne Room, very lush black metal inspired by the environment and suchlike lyrically.

Also there was an early prog band from Finland called Tasavallan Preidentti who had a kind of forest-y vibe
