Hi Guys,
Check out the Two ChileKings. These guys have created some pretty awesome instrumental rock. I'm not really sure the best genre for them. I am thinking Symph or Eclectic, but maybe Heavy Prog also, but I am open to suggestion on this one as I am never really sure of good locations for all instrumental bands (in my mind they are all jazz/fusion).
   This is some really great music though, so I am pretty sure that you'll enjoy giving them a listen no matter your genre team. Here is their blurb from their MySpace page:
Two ChileKings is a progressive rock duo that takes prog back to it's roots. Dondi Ledesma (native to Iloilo, Philippines) and Christopher Messer (native to Alvin, Tx. USA) worked together as bandmates in a classic rock/blues band based out of Manila, Philippines named "The Wally Gonzalez Band". Dondi and Christopher had such a unique bassist/drummer connection, that they decided to record together. The outcome of it all was the first Two ChileKings album named "THWIP". Soon to be released. Two ChileKings take a unusual approach to prog by using only lead piccolo bass, electric bass, fretless bass, keyboards, acoustic drums and vocals. There is no electric nor acoustic guitar. This instrument combination delivers a brutal sound! Two ChileKings is old school prog in raw form.

hard to categorize-- there are major jazz elements, improvisation and a distinct heavy fusion sensibility as on cuts 'Dry Fire Valley' and 'La Fajita'.. things like 'Good Day to the Sadman' resembles HeavyProg but again shows clear jazz elements, Satriani-like 'Marinara Apparition' even has a classic jazz bass solo near the end.. my conclusion is that these guys have a jazz background but have a taste for heavy instrumental rock, something like a much less polished Bruford or Planet X ..I would say either Eclectic or JR/F, though I would consider them for HP as well, let's see what others think |

I don't see it fitting well in symph. So far I lean towards Eclectic or heavy, but need to listen to more. And, arguably, the best album in Eclectic, that being Bubu's Anabelas of course, has clear jazz elements (common in prog of course). This is an Eclectic mix -- jazz does not dominate enough to my ear for JRF.

I heard it all and agree with Logan, hardly Symphonic, I'd say:
1.- Crossover: It's very diluted Prog.
2.- Eclectic
3.- Hard Prog
4.- Prog Related

And I have to say that Ivan does a good list, and makes a good point with Xover. Sometimes I feel I pass stuff over to Xover too much, but Crossover more than crossed my mind as I listened to it. It can be pretty non-progressive rock (mainstream), but more overall than related (an "art rock" one).

Thanks for the quick response in giving them a listen. After a second listen I agree that Symph is probably not a good option. At the time I was typing the original post I was listening to RatPig Upperture and there was a symphonic feel to that song for me. But I agree overall Symph makes up a small part of their sound.
Interestingly, I didn't really consider them for crossover but I suppose that it is similar to eclectic in the blending of various prog genres. I consider crossover to be more of a blend of prog with non-prog though where as I consider eclectic to be a blend of various prog subgenres, and I felt this was pretty progressive. I am still trying to get a feel for the various categories though and for that matter I am still trying to figure out what is prog. That is why I am but a mere Collab instead of a Special Collab, and also why I am not a Genre Team specialist, since I have no specialty.  Now the Music Scott Likes subgenre, I am generally a pretty good expert on, but then again some things do slip through and slip by from time to time there too.-------------

^ Diluted prog, crossover prog... What's in a name? Connotations. One does sound more positive than the other, I must say. Oh wait, Crossover Prog, by definition is that which "contains progressive rock music that, though 100% progressive, may have a musical connection to popular music." Anyway, there seems to me to be clearly "an influence from mainstream music." ^^ It's a good recommendation Scott, and you made a good case for Eclectic evaluation in a team thread. The Two ChileKings have been added to Heavy Prog. Their debut album THWIP can be listened streaming in its entirety on their website (link above). If you get a chance please visit their site, give the songs a listen, and provide a review. I think that this is definitely music that will appeal to many of us prog fans.
